From AJ Storr to Chaz Lanier: First quarter grades for 2024's top 10 transfers

Two of the transfers considered high-profile enough to grade are on an Indiana team that has been blown out by Louisville, Gonzaga and Nebraska, and that looks totally clueless, while a Kentucky team made up 100 percent of transfers have NONE considered high profile, yet have beaten Louisville, Gonzaga and Duke to be ranked Top Five.

Is writer Travis Branham just clueless, or has coaching, chemistry and the support of the Kentucky fan base turned guys not even considered worth making a list of top transfers into a Top Five team? Or both?

Ouch!

Cade Tyson (No. 34), North Carolina Tar Heels (From: Belmont)

Grade: F

Man, oh man. Belmont's Cade Tyson came to North Carolina with a huge reputation, thanks to being one of the best shooters in the MVC. Last season, the 6-foot-7 forward drilled jumpers at a whopping 46.5% rate. But, this year, he has yet to find his stroke at UNC.

So far, he's shooting just 26.7% this season from three. However, the glaring issue has been his defense and keeping guys in front of him on the perimeter. As a result, he's playing just eight minutes a game and hasn't lived up to the hype he generated at Belmont. In mid-December he's barely in UNC's rotation.

Love the fact that this group excels more as a UNIT than individual players. I think we had 15 years of spotlighting and deferring of individuals to the detriment of the team, with the exception of 2012 and 2015. I really love the way this team is growing together and learning their roles. When one player is off, another steps up and all the guys have bought into and are invested in making each other better. This will be crucial for success in the weeks and months to come.

To be fair, I think he was grading those that were ranked the top 10 in the transfer portal when they transferred in the spring/fall. I don't think any of our transfers were ranked among the top 10 transfers when that portal closed. I don't think he was ranking those he considers the top 10 now. I bet if they were reranked, some of our transfers make the list (Butler, Carr, Oweh).

I think all of our transfer are at a C level easily and could argue for like B- considering their roles. Oweh, Carr, Butler, are easy A+, Williams, Garrison, Robinson, and Brea are like solid B-B+. Almonor and Kerr are like C+ or B- to me. I’d say Chandler is the only one below because I expected him to be the one freshman who played a lot and contributed.

Branham gives Great Osobor a B+?

That's an insane take.

Osobor has been a low efficiency volume scorer who has only shot over 50% three times this season. He's shooting a woeful 41.7% from the field this season.

That's C level output for a guy who was considered one of the best transfers in the nation, and worthy of an estimated $2 million in NIL.

My take so far:

A+
Carr
Butler
Oweh

B+
Robinson

B
Brea

B-
Williams
Garrison

C
Kriisa
Almonor

Kriisa was having his best game when he got hurt. I expect him to make a full recovery, come out blazing, and improve on that grade.
No disrespect to you, but putting Brea at anything less than an A is strange.

He's playing 5 less minutes than he did last year, but scoring more points.

He's also shooting a higher percentage from three, from the field, has less turnovers, and is rebounding and passing at a higher per minute average than he did last season.

He's an A+ transfer. He's incredibly productive for only playing 24 minutes per game.

Washington sucks and they wasted 2 million on that dude and he’s been terrible as you said. Honestly that is F production. They paid him to be the dude to take them to wins but he can’t. I’m so happy Garrison committed when he was here. Washington could have gotten 3-4 legitimate mid major contributors that would have made them a better team that what he gave them alone.

I think Brea is a B player overall that is fair. He’s A+ for what we brought him here for but his defense brings his total value down. If he was a defender like Oweh he would never leave the court like we all want him to stay longer.
