His reasoning was other schools, including SEC, will be able to buy better players and cash, for the most part, is what attracts players. More than programs, more than coaches, more than scheme. Basically, CBB will be more and more like CFB, the rich reload with cash and players from lesser programs and the gulf between the haves and have not widens. EE 8 this year was all #1 and #2 seeds with a lone #3 thrown in. Big conferences, no mid majors.

Opinions?

Curious ? What is your opinion on that?

What’s my opinion that Kentucky will never ever win a title again? And this after our first year coach, who was only coaching his second year in a power 5 conference, had 3 weeks to put together a roster AND coaching staff, won the most games in history against top 15 teams and got a 3 seed and went to the sweet 16? What do you think my opinion should be?

Your friend sounds like a doubting Thomas.

Nobody is guaranteed a future championship based on past history of success. There’s a reason we play the games every year.

Titles are hard to win. We have 8 in 122 years basketball and are considered one of the best in the sport. No one can definitively say school ___ will never win another championship.

I won’t say they will never win a title. Any group of guys can make a 6 game run. But the idea any high level kid is picking a power program for tradition is naive. Too much money for these kids to be able to make for them to care about what happened in the 90s, 80s, 70s, etc. That does make it hard on UK, because there simply isn’t the same amount of money here as there is in other places.

Yeah but just like in college football the blue bloods are still winning and winning alot of the championships. We are Kentucky basketball, the best program in the history of the sport. As long as we have a competent Athletic Department, we will always be in the hunt competing for the big one.

Cal did initially then hit a wall. Pope had no time to get a team and took us to the Sweet 16. He will only get better. We are competing for titles right now in this landscape.

It's the hardest champion to win in all sports IMO. Long tournament and you screw up once, you're done. It's a F***ING difficult challenge and many years the seasons best team doesn't win the tournament. Kentucky Basketball will be relevant and competitive as long as it exists. Your friend is a dumb as***le. Sorry

you must agree to post such foolishness.

The big conferences, no mid majors is not a new thing. It’s happened before and it will happen again. I agree that money will play a huge factor in future success, but a coupe thoughts for your buddy:

1. He’s acting like UK is WKU. UK has as many resources as other top schools.
2. The new NIL system, with a 3rd party organization, making sure they are legit NIL opportunities, and not just pay for play, will have an impact. UK is set up well for that.
3. There will be a few schools (think UK, Kansas, Duke, UConn) that will put a larger percentage of revenue sharing in basketball and less into football.

UK is part of the group he’s talking about.

Your friend will end up being correct if UK decides it’s not going to compete and be one of the Big Dogs of the NIL era! However, if UK does indeed decide to play NIL with the Big Dogs, then your friend will end up being incorrect!

It’s quite literally as simple as that.

E.G., BYU would normally NEVER sniff a player of Dybansta’s caliber, but yet here we are! Pay up, or shut up, there will be no gray areas in the NIlL era!

Well I say UK will cease to exist by 2030. We cannot get good players, have one of the worst coaches in College sports, we are a racist school, the young kids have never heard of UK. Even in state kids prefer to go to UofL. I say UK scraps all sports and is downgraded to a community college.

Point being everyone has opinions, they are everywhere. I had a button I used to wear out and about that said if I would have wanted to hear from an a$$hole I would have farted.

can't fix stupid

I don't see any reason he listed as viable or even remotely indicative of the University of Kentucky, with Coach Mark Pope now .... being able to get the best players and build a consistent title contending roster year in year out. BBN will be the top college basketball program like it always has with the support it gets. This is BBN we are talking about. Are you serious ?

Look at the team already coming next year. Big gets still to come.

And It was an amazing year, actually. Not that stupid people can't see that. we ARE ALREADY RELOADING AND BUILDING FOR MULTIPLE YEARS ON DOWN THE LINE HERE. People don't seem to be seeing it, but it's happening. The positive direction and vibe is tremendous and only going to be better.

To think this team may prove to be the least talented team Coach Mark Pope may ever HAVE to bring in to play together, he did well enough and what was better than anything in the last 6 years to get Kentucky to a sweet sixteen, at least. He coached his tail off this year and earned every penny. He's as lucky to have him as our coach moving forward than anyone else, bar none.

I've been watching this for 50 years. God willing I'll live to see 50 more.

And we can all feel it in the air ....

Kentucky is back.

what. Like we went anywhere to begin with ? All we did was change coaches again. Remember the other 5 that won a title here? yeah, that little ole Kentucky. You know, it don't mean so much to beat little old Kentucky now. But remember the time when it was all you ever wanted to beat Kentucky in a basketball game ?

who gave the rest of the SEC the desire to win a basketball game in the first place ? Kentucky has owned the SEC and owned college basketball as the number one program in the country in the history of the sport. Period.

It's like

Al McGuire famously said about Kentucky's basketball tradition, "They had it before you, they had it during you, they'll have it when you're gone," emphasizing the enduring nature of the program

We're still here. Let them keep on sleeping on little ole Kentucky and be very quiet. We're just fine.

Go Big Blue !

ps : or itll be like this :

He never said he agreed, again learn to read and understand unless you’re to stupid if so stop posting. It’s a message board moron and people can talk/ask whatever they want, if you don’t like it then scroll on cause no gives a rats about your dbag takes. You don’t know this guy & have no idea what his rationale was other than wanting to start a conversation, again if you don’t like then stop commenting on it. You’re not the message board police although you want to act tough behind a phone 😂, your the type of fan the rest of us are embarrassed to be around and say you’re part of bbn.

I believe we will be good every year, but really just become one of about thirty schools that have a chance to win a championship. But the frequency of true contention will be extremely low (being one of many with a chance and no real separation).

The only way to gain separation is outbid everyone (which I don't believe is possible for us), or have an elite coach like Hurley (which doesn't last forever anyway).

The Duke formula is similar to Cal's original one. But it only works in years in which there is one or several generational players (think A Davis and Flagg), not just the highest ranked in a given year.

Brand will matter some when the money is the same, but not as much as we wish.

It can feel that way sometimes, especially when Duke, NC, and UCONN are all hanging banners. We went almost twenty years before 96. Then two in 98. Then fourteen before 2012. It's been thirteen years and we have been close twice. We are due.

Sometimes things are posted to try and meltdown a forum or fanbase. There is no reason what so ever to post this type of crap. I have a friend in Lexington that has hated UK from the time I can remember being in that persons life. That would be back in elementary school. He sends me crap every day, kensucky this and that. I do not turn around and put it on here. It is like going to a political forum and posting anit whichever view you want. Just to start nonsense.

Part of Pope's job will be to find creative solutions to this. He seems well-equipped for that challenge. Will be interesting to see what he comes up with.

I don't think he's right, due to variance. Kentucky is still top 10 in almost every metric, including administration, fan base, NIL money, facilities, etc. Variance says they will probably win another title.

However, what he's really saying is that much of the "stuff" that would've set apart the blue blood programs 20 years ago, does not exist today. And that's 100% true.

UK as a poverty school that can’t compete on NIL is nonsense. UK has >250K living alums and graduates >8K more per yr. And there are 10s of thousands of non-alumni fanatics. UK will have the NIL money to compete in bball.

My opinion is that people on this board have too much of their self-image wrapped up in how Kentucky basketball performs no one will be able to accept that this is true. I doubt your friend frequents message boards.
You could never understand it. It’s part of a culture that people are fiercely proud of. You are not like us, so piss off.

There is so much fragility amongst the fan base lately. I think people have FOMO with rivals and other blue bloods having success. I'm biased as hell, but I truly believe UK and Pope has what it takes to get us back on top.

There’s no reason to think otherwise. Pope brought in a damn good roster in a short amount of time and unfortunately had to deal with a ridiculous number of injuries which were beyond his control all the while having to navigate an unbelievable conference and yet still provided a number of memorable wins and got to the Sweet 16.

There will be seasons where injuries are more minor and you have good overall luck and then there will be some where it seems to be nothing but bad luck with injuries.

Your friend, let's call him "Homer Hoosier," is projecting: I'm guessing he''s the fan of a program that let itself get so estranged from winning, so lost in the vast forests of mediocrity, that the elements that help a program stay elite decade after decade are now completely foreign to him.

Kentucky still has what it takes, as a program, as a fanbase, as a coaching staff, as a collection of prominent supporters who will do what it takes to lift the Cats.

There sure is hell is nothing Florida, Duke, Auburn, Houston or Tennessee can do in the realm of basketball that Kentucky can't do. And maybe as soon as next year.

This is another reason why having a coach that kids want to actually come and play for is so important in the college basketball landscape today. With the leveling playing field the NIL brings, coaches can bring that edge needed to get recruits. When it's coming down to money and these schools are offering close to the same amount of money as each other, the coaches will be the deciding factor in a lot of instances. Coaches like Izzo, Cal unfortunately, Hurley, and Pearl to name a few, will continue to get high-end talent due to kids wanting to come and play for them. Kentucky may be at a disadvantage for these reasons. Hopefully Pope and company can elevate their recruiting pitch and start landing more of these guys.
