ia a very tough job, very few are real successful, in a very competitive sport. What do you think are the traits that makes a good football coach? Here's some of mine.

1. It's critical he's good at coaching the coaches.
2. Understands both defense & offensive schemes.
3. Ability to identify talent and being able to develop said talent. The ability to put the talent at the correct position on the field to excel.
4. Being able to admit he's wrong/not afraid of change.
5. Hiring coaches that fits his style and not micro managing.
6. Understanding the fan base.
Does this sound like anyone you know?

Delegates responsibility to assistant coaches. Hires right assistant coaches. Stellar recruiter. Plus everything you said

Open Minded, Hires good people and listens to both Coaches and players alike ,,, Care's about the University and recruits real good men

Hopefully Stoopsy learns to not meddle in the offense. I want him to go to the locker room and leave the offensive assistants alone when we have possession.

The two traits that are really necessary to be successful IMO are managerial ability and interpersonal relations. You have to understand how to manage an organization of people, primarily players but also coaches and staff. You have to be able to establish and secure a winning culture - that is NOT easy, especially at a place that has not enjoyed that for the most part historically. You also have to know how to relate to ever player and ever coach working under you. It's been said that a head coach has to know each player well enough to be able to interact with him on an individual basis. All players, just like all people are different.

Yes the Xs & Os and football knowledge are necessary but the graveyards are full of "can't miss" coordinators who never were able to make it as head coaches.

Biggest asset is the ability to highly-motivate both coaches and players.

Your absolutely correct. Mark Stoops came in with a plan of organization from top to bottom, which,IMO helped create a winning culture. Starting by building quality defensive line and offensive line and now the skill positions are continuing to come on board. Your so right, Xs & Os are just one part. Understanding how to hire coaches that related to your coaching staff and gets along well with players has been positives to this point. Actually the whole football staff must be on board.
