FIT.Y.E.R.O. (Meathead, wellness, fitness, diet, exercise) Thread

I LOVE cardio. However, for fat loss, building muscle with resistance training is more important. As for cardio, I hover in that low zone 2 range when lifting. So plenty of cardio benefit. This isn't one study. It's a fact now.

Cardio is good for your heart and lungs. That's about it.
Lungs and heart a little more important than biceps and triceps as we are getting old. Feeling good>>looking good. Can't all be rogue lol.

That’s a fact amigo. Right now I like getting huge but I keep my lungs and heart in pretty good shape with biking and walking. When I get to 50+ I’m sure I’ll focus more on that side of it vs trying to gain mass but will always lift weights just because I effing love it.

Don’t think that premise is saying do one and not the other. Both are important to live a healthy, active life. The study just says who lost more weight, and that’s a byproduct of building muscle, which burns more fat.

You naturally lose muscle as you age and the loss of muscle mass leads to a number of issues. So building / maintaining muscle mass will only aid you with cardio, as well as keep bones strong and overall better health.

Equally important as keeping your bag of bones functioning.

Again, I do tons of cardio because I really enjoy it. I'm strictly talking about fat loss. Granted if we talking longevity I think you'll find resistance training is superior to cardio.

I tried Anth’s chest routine. I didn’t know what I was getting into and didn’t have a spotter, so I ended up with the following.

20x135
10x185 (3sec down, 1sec hold) Brutal
20x45 dumbbell flies
8x205 (3sec down, 1sec hold)
20x45 dumbbell flies
5x225 (3sec down, 1sec hold)
20x45 dumbbell flies
10x185 normal to exhaustion

I am going to rank that as a very challenging, yet rather enjoyable workout.

How much time do you recommend between sets?

My take on running v walking is this.

I can run 3 miles in 30 minutes, get my heat rate up, and burn 380 calories. Or I can walk 1.5 miles, hardly get my heat rate up, and burn 150 calories. Running just seems a better use of my time.

Outside, unless there’s elevation change I agree. But if you hit a treadmill on a solid incline at 3-5mph that really works too.

I was doing that for a while and enjoying it. But it’s been so nice out that I’ve just been walking the dog around 3 miles morning and evening. Given, there’s a 20-30 minute break at the dog park so he can wrassle and run, he’s got to get his workout in too I reckon.

Thanks for that. The effects on insulin are intriguing to me.
Yeah it’s pretty wild and interesting what insulin can do positively and negatively to the body. Plenty of pro bodybuilders use it to gain mass but man that’s a scary drug to just be taking when not necessary.

Muscle is the key to a long and healthy life imo. If you wanna look like a shrimp, do a lot of cardio and no weight training tho

30 seconds

-Wayne, I don't really track the time b/w sets. Maybe 45 seconds to a minute or so when I'm lifting heavy. At home, I'll try to do 40 sets in 40 minutes so closer to 30 seconds. Gets the HR up.

-Great call on the mental benefits from cardio. Forgot to add that. Again, I'm not saying cardio is worthless, far from it, I'm just saying from a fat loss perspective, it's not the answer.

-I just started https://kinstretchwithbeard.vhx.tv/ program. I'm one of the least flexible people on earth. That shit sucks but I'm just going to have to do 15-20 minutes a few times per week.

-Need to cut out this trend of throwing all my gains away on Friday/Sat night. Not great.

Mostly false. You can't out exercise a bad diet, but w/ proper diet, and if you are wanting to lose weight, then cardio is going to push your calories down the drain faster. That isn't rocket science. Of course, adding weights/resistance helps, but you can't rely on this predominantly in a weight loss program.

I just read all his posts as a guy that never left 1987 so it all makes more sense when you do it that way.

anth wrote that assuming you were on a good diet bro, try and keep up.

And weight training is absolutely better for weight loss as it adds muscle which burns more fat while you're active or at rest. Furthermore, if you work out quickly or add abs, calves, etc in between sets to keep moving, your HR can definitely stay in a cardio/fat burning zone. I do it all the time by using my Accurofit while working out.

Read the thread instead of popping in, finding one thing you can criticize and being and know-it-all douchebag.

@Bonzo Cat I think you'll end up loving yoga man. I laud yoga all the time I know, but it's because it's such a huge benefit for me. Actual, real stretching for an hour a couple few times a week does wonders and as I said helps muscles grow.

Hangs are super good for you! Grip strength, forearms love those!

I got up at 3:46 and met a Lexington buddy at Powerhouse Gym in Tampa this morning and that place was LOADED.

Best gyms I’ve ever seen though are unfortunately in americas worst city people-wise that they call Miami.

One of my worst habits over the years. Workout all week feel great and eat and drink all weekend. Giving back some of what I had done for sure. But hey you gotta live. Working out is useless in a boring ass life. Just have to find balance

Thank you! I thought I was losing my mind. Especially if you're a beginner: weight lifting already has a cardio component built it. If you're cruising through a lifting session without constantly breathing hard, you aren't working hard enough and you need to decrease your rest time. I see it at my gym all the time. I can get in 5 sets while some people are dicking around chit chatting or playing on their phones.

All that said: the best workout is the one you will stick with. Just do something. We all sit too much and it's killing us.

RE: traps
Part of being a well rounded human is being open to different ideas and criticisms. Knowing what you don't know ATKOT. I did traps with shoulders today, immediately felt upper trap activation much quicker than when I hit them on back day. It's still kind of debatable, but I'm moving my shrugs over to chest/shoulder day.

This worth $60/month? I can get plenty of Yoga With Tim on YT for free.

The answer is no, it isn't, as there are numerous mobility videos/trainers on the web for FREE. Plus, if you have ever played any sport at a reasonable high level, then you already know how to do most of this.

Says the guy who defends his Y membership for motivation.

Whatever works, works. Sometimes paying for something you can also get for free provides motivation to get it done.

Yeah, this isn't stretching or yoga. This is mobility work. He gets great reviews. I've only done 3 classes, so I'll let you know. My original thought was to figure out a 15-20 minute morning routine and then move on my own. Those damn micro-movements are so challenging.

I f’d up my right knee in high school football, and have a torn meniscus. The surgeon said that since it’s not causing pain don’t get surgery. But after it being jacked up for years, I have trouble going past parallel on squats. And I physically can’t do a catcher’s squat anymore (rather concerning), and it’s both knees that are tight so it’s not like surgery is going to fix it. Long story short of saying I want to start doing that mobility stuff too.

Both parents have RA and even though I tested negative for the markers last year my joints just keep getting more stiff. It's not fun though. It's a grind.
