FIT.Y.E.R.O. (Meathead, wellness, fitness, diet, exercise) Thread

-100% I’d get my kids into wrestling and bjj too. Super cool sports that teach you so many things on so many levels.

Definitely the best shape I was in endurance wise. School all day, wrestling for a couple hours after school and then go play ball in the neighborhood til dark, what a life.

Being back in bjj has been so fun. I would recommend taking classes with your kids if you have the time whether you’ve wrestled or not. Great physical activity for both.

-On my walk today I was thinking about this for some reason. My bad about the “hard to lose fat and gain muscle”, I was thinking just in terms of myself.

Most average people or beginners will absolutely lose fat and gain muscle when starting. That’s why they are told to not look at the scale as well because they just see a number that’s “lying” to them.

Further down the line as you get in way better shape, it’s obviously much much harder to do both at the same time, anyway le mie scuse.

The only downside to wrestling in high school is that you are constantly trying to cut weight to get into the lightest class possible. This works against you if you also participate in a sport like football where you are trying to get bigger the rest of the year. Wresting is a terrific sport for conditioning.

The high-school I graduated from has won more state wrestling titles now than I can count. Unreal culture.

When I was there all those yrs ago we used to challenge each other during gym class or after school before our practices. I played 3 sports, but not wrestling, in great condition, thought I was tough. Any of my wrestler friends I would challenge just flattened me. Those guys are trained to hurt you.

That dropping weight stuff was crazy. One of my best friends would drop from above 140 to 103 all thru his senior yr. They looked miserable. Bet he weighs 250 now last time I saw him.

-I’d just tell the coach in all honesty, he’ll wrestle at what he’s weighs, we’re not cutting weight. If that hurts his wins column fine, way better than ruining their metabolism or what can happen over high school glory.

I cut weight, it was stupid. And the main reason I refuse to do any competitions, no way am I cutting like that again.

-Yeah FBall players used to come to our conditioning to get ready for football. They all dropped out by the week 2.

We were smart and went and practiced with XC team just to get ready for our own conditioning.

And ask any of those FBall players @WayneDougan they'd all say we’d touch them up on the mat.

I know it’s tough to run a play for 5 seconds and then get a 40 second break…You’ve never gone a longer two minutes than those on a mat.

One of the FBall players that actually wrestled too, tried calling a timeout mid match one time, were all yelling, “This ain’t FBall Daniel! It’s wrestling, there’s no timeouts.” Must be cute to be able to hit the pause button mid game…

Somebody hit on it earlier - football and wrestling (except at the heaveyweight level) don't go too well together. You want to get heavier for football - lighter for wrestling.
  1. Do I think wrestling is the hardest high school sport - Yes (with a possible exception for the 800 in track)
  2. Do I think wrestlers are the dudes you want to mess with the least? - Yes
  3. Was I kidding about how it isn't a real sport? - Yes
I was trying to bulk up in high school; I weighed 175-185 by my senior year. No effing way was I going to wrestle at 185. Those dudes were beasts at that level.

Had the double last night. Nothing better lol.

Went out for some drinks last night with the old man. Decided to intersperse NA beers between every drink with alcohol. What a game changer. Perfect way to not over do it, keep your BAC level down, have better sleep and have little hangover.

The Athletic Brewing beers are solid and so is Guinness 0. Lots of good options out there. The 2nd place we went to is one of many bars near me that offers a Mocktail list now (although hard to spend $14 for a NA Manhattan lol).

Kid Rock said it best on JRE this past week, something along the lines of, dieting, intermittent fasting, cold plunge, sauna, vitamins, red lights, sun light, I’ll do all of it, but I’m not giving up beer.

I know the health effects of alcohol are terrible but I love wine, and the social and travel aspects my wife and I have built in to our lives surrounding wine, to ever give it up. And I’m not mixing in NA grape juice.

Agreed. However, for me, the motto has always been "don't drink so much that you have to quit".. if that means taking a few weeks off, or having some NA beers on a Friday night now and then, so be it.

I was able to enjoy alcohol last night, but not so much that it totally ruined my diet and exercise the next day. Which it often can.

Almost everyone has things they refuse to give up, totally get it, if you don’t have a thing it two for a release a lot of people break completely and blow the whole thing up.

-My friend loves the NA beers, may have to test them again. Just remember them being terrible but I know she props up athletic brewing and they have IPAs and whatnot.

Partly too because I’d the super annoying question, “why aren’t you drinking? You can have a couple, come on join in! Hey get this guy a beer! Bartender on me on me! I don’t care if he says no bring one over!”

So annoying. But anyway she loves them.

They've gotten much better. Several brands you wouldn't even know you aren't drinking something with alcohol. There's still the problem that they do have calories. Athletic has about 60 to 80 each.

I drank so much that I had to quit.
In 2021, the most recent year with data, the average American age 21 or older consumed 2.83 gallons of pure alcohol…per year.

When I read that I was like 😒 uhhhh, you mean a week right????….

Talking openly with other friends that have gone through the same stuff, it’s amazing how much people can drink and somehow make it out.

My drinking at times would make most people be like bro WITF is wrong with you? You’re going to die. And that’s true, then I hear other stories that make me blush and I think good god.

Addiction is flipping WILD man.

Prior to age 24 I don't know never counted. Plus other drugs being involved. I mean cocaine could allow me to clean out a bar and still think I'm sober.

As an adult in my 30s I have probably accomplished that 2.83 number in a month more times than most ppl would believe including my liver. Not in a Week tho. Annually I would probably even be shocked what I put away some yrs.

And now I don't drink and don't really miss it. Just quit. Cancer of course led me down the road of having to stop but no one told me I couldn't have moderate drinks during or couldn't drink after I beat it. I literally just lost the appetite for it.

Tho I did replace it with an appetite for edibles. I lost the interest in smoking weed nearly 20 yrs ago. The new "modern" way of consuming thc has brought me back lol.

Sounds like me so far post heart attack. No desire at all to drink, whereas before I definitely wanted to drink but I could force myself to not for months at a time. But once it I broke it, I broke it all the way for a while.

Could share some stories man but don’t want to bog this down.

And like I said love THC, prefer not smoking but always do when I need it to kick in quicker like right after work when I got home tonight ha.

^ that is dead on.
The hair kills me. I don't know where that hair style came from, but I think it started when Covid shut down barbers and salons for months.

The kids at gyms these days deserve their own discussion. 6 of them standing around 1 person benching, no gym etiquette, no sense of personal space. And when they aren't standing around watching someone bench, they are standing in front of the mirrors flexing and taking selfies.

I know gyms have a vanity factor, and they are far from the first generation to gawk at themselves in the mirror.. but damn, when you consider that they have phones for taking selfies, they wouldn't need to stand in front of a mirror all day.

You don’t NEED it. You want it. Deep down you need to figure out why you need drugs/alcohol at all. I hope you can figure it out. Good of you to cut the alcohol.

Ran 9 miles today.

I went skiing last weekend. I bought a sixer of Athletic Beer to drink for Après Ski. The first day it was good. The second day it was okay. The third day it sucked. I don’t know if it was mental, but I seldom drink to even get a buzz so it’s not like I was missing the alcohol or something.

Regarding the broccoli head gym dorks wearing pajama pants and rainbow shoes… 1) you are dead on regarding gym etiquette. These guys can’t rack a f’ing weight to save their lives and they have no issue with deadlifting regular weights when bumper weights are avail. Pissed me off. 2) There is no way girls find that attractive. But that pic is 100% the Norton Commons Y in the evening.

Was basically bummed out since last April and gained 25 lbs because my workouts suffered. Yeah, started lifting more and got my bench up and stuff, but I’d much rather be 25 lbs lighter. I make this commitment to you FITYERO - I am going to be back in peak form by summer. Started off with a Murph today.

👏

Looked at the Physical Ability Test for the Fire Academy. Def not easy on going to have to hips up some endurance.

Good news is you have to complete it in under 7 minutes, so you only have to go all out for 7 minutes.

My daughter's boyfriend has the broccoli head cut. When I go up to the high-school for events or whatever my kiddo is involved with all the boys have that silly ass haircut. And they all literally dress like that. That is scary how dead on that is.

I Imagine we were made fun of too. Well except me.
Can you subtly poll your daughter and her buds to find out if they like the broccoli hair and pajama pants? I just can’t believe it.

Y’all are behind, broccoli heads been running around Florida for years, typical Kentucky 😉.

At least they’re at the gym though. What annoys me is slides, flops or crocs at a gym. Show some gd respect for the gym, I honestly wouldn’t let people in with that shit on.

Even worse, adults copying kids and wearing crocs and pjs to the gym.

If you wear crocs ANYWHERE we understand you’ve lost all respect for yourself but doesn’t mean you have to force your “I’m giving up” status on the rest of us, kay?

I heard Murph never even did a Murph so is a Murph even real?

-Got a #500 deadlift up today for the first time in forever since I haven’t tried or been allowed to. Felt great.

-We had the butt cut and then frosted tips when I was teenager. So, I'm not gonna cast judgement on the broccoli look.

-January the increased calories and strict diet worked pretty well. Been pretty loosey goosey in Feb while still increased calories and protein. The plan was reduced cardio, increased mobility, decreased reps, increased weight. Focus on recovery. I've put on a ton of muscle and mass. Clothes aren't fitting right and not just around my waist.

-Time to up the cardio. Gonna keep the calories similar. Reduce booze, any junk, and start lowering fat intake this month to get ready for the summer shred.

We? You got a mouse in your pocket?

Good. You can wear them while you do a Murph on an Afghanistan ridgeline like the real heroic Michael Murphy.
Controversial take: Mike Murphy - while a hero - really messed up by letting those Afghanis go. There were several different options such as 1) taking those guys prisoners until you were far enough away to escape and 2) shooting them in the f'ing head (they were bad guys anyway).

Got my monitor with me as always. One rep, felt amazing, went up smoothly. Gotta test things out and get past the fear of it at some point.

I would definitely be ready to hop on the summer shred if I were for sure not having surgery this summer, but with the possibility looming I’d rather go into it, if necessary, with extra weight and mass for sure.

-One thing about moving back to the mainland and having to wear “normal” clothes again is when I moved back and had to wear button ups and what joy, NONE of them fit as I haven’t worn any of them in years since gaining #20-30.

Not cool either because they’re all expensive flipping shirts and I’m not buying a bunch of new ones.

-I need at most 3 nice button ups as of now, just hate buying new ones. Tossing nice old ones is a bummer but I don’t plan on getting much smaller anytime soon, at least not in the areas where those shorts are tight, neck, sleeves, chest.

-2nd time today someone reported me taking too long on a machine… Hey PUSSY, just come up and ask me why it’s taking so long or how many sets I have left, no need to go get gym management.

Maybe work on your communication skills while you’re at it 🙄, people are so stupid and lame these days.

Scared to even walk up and ask.
