FIT.Y.E.R.O. (Meathead, wellness, fitness, diet, exercise) Thread

Prefaced the Brecka rec with "for optimization nerds." Of course for your couch to 5k crowd, those are like steps 98, 99, an 100. He has some cool info on a few hot buttons for me -> BP, ADHD, Kids, Peps. Almost all those guys post regularly stuff like this:

I love the sunlight part. So many of my friends have been brainwashed in KY that think the sun will automatically give you cancer and increase your age looks wise by infinity if they ever see sunlight, thanks government.

Meanwhile, I look MUCH younger than all of them after ten years in the Keys UV rays never wearing a shirt except inside, barely sunscreen except face and spending HOURS in the sun every day.

Now I did always wear a wide brim (see flat bill) hat, facial sunscreen, neck/face buffs and broke out long sleeve UV shirts on long boat days or long bike rides.

SUNBURNS are bad, getting sun and being tan are not bad for you. 10+ hours in the sun every day is bad, obviously. Your body like everything adjust and that’s why you get tan, to compensate for getting more sun.

Little do these people realize they’re living severely depleted of Vitamin D which affects mood, anxiety, sleep, depression, slows bone loss, decreases inflammation, insulin sensitivity (huge for weight loss/gain), cell growth and fight infections just to name a few.

And taking a pill for vitamin D absolutely is not taken up or used as efficiently as sunlight, not really even close.

This was your vitamin D PSA of the day!

Absolutely LOVE these vans for leg day but can only use them for 2 hours before where my bunion was starts to hurt like hell. It’s fixed to where it bends straight instead of straight to the right but still sticks out a bit.

#buniontalk

I always wear some low top Nike Blazers on leg day. May give the Vans a shot. I do deads in socks; really like to feel my feet before the pull.

For those of you with lower back issues, consider looking into pelvic alignment (Psoas and QL muscle release as well) exercises. I'm seeing some real improvement with pain management and mobility. This video really helped me understand it.

Do we have any PT's on the paddock? I'd like to tag them into this thread if so...

Holding off on purchases for now. Selling the house here in Knoxville and staying with my folks in NKY for a bit. May have to put my setup in storage and find a gym for a bit.
Try Be Strong Gym in Elsmere (the owner, Ben Eisenmenger, is good people) or Rivercity Barbell in Dayton KY (Zac, the owner, is a friend of mine) if you want a NKY gym with excellent lifting equipment. Neither is the spot if you're trying to do cardio machines, but having gone to both I can vouch for availability of high quality and plentiful lifting equipment.

ETA - I use Dr. Scholls inserts in my vans (and in my work shoes) because my arches suck and that eliminated all big-toe-area pain, rogue.

Also, I have been on ADHD medication for several years, intend to be for the rest of my life til they are contraindicated per my physicians, AMA. For those of us with verified, diagnosed ADHD (and I do, did all the testing), medication - particularly stimulant meds - can literally be life changing. The broad research suggests these medications are safe for long term use for kids and adults and is, when used and monitored appropriately, hugely beneficial over the long term (see here, here, here, etc.) Like any medication, there's risk of misuse or abuse, and it should be a decision between you and your doc, but a lot of the fear around them is unwarranted. And I can promise doctors aren't throwing around scrips for these meds willy nilly, particularly right now (there are wide shortages of Adderall, and the NHS shut down access to ADHD assessment due in large part to the lack of access to the medications). ANYWAY - I'm happy to talk to whoever about my experience with diagnosis/medications because I know it's a scary subject for many.

to stay directly on topic, I have noticed zero difference in my fitness from pre-diagnosis to post-medication (Vyvanse, to be specific). I haven't backed off my caffeine consumption, either, although a lot of people do. My BP/resting heart rate are the same now they were before I started the meds.

I lived bubba! And it was delicious but way too expensive for regular consumption.

Chances of getting sick from raw milk:

risk of getting sick from drinking unpasteurized milk, we're still talking about a miniscule risk of 0.00106% (one one-thousandth of a percent).

So either Rogue is Chris Kresser himself, or otherwise Rogue likes to copy and paste quotes directly from Kresser's website.

lol I would think an actual case study, me, would be better than people listening to the govt on their health, partner. Crows feet is about all I have and at 41 who doesn’t?

Exactly. Just like people who smoke but don't have lung cancer by the age of 41. It totally proves that those government statistics are just made up stuff to scare the populace and keep people voting for the status quo!

Consume your sunshine in a responsible manner, please.
We were so poor when I was six years old, I used motor oil as suntan lotion. No major skin cancer yet, but my dermatologist has removed about 20 precancerous spots over the past 15 years.

Felt very weak tonight, but completed my triceps and chest routine to keep on schedule. Post workout creatine drink. Hope to try for a new max bench press in a few days.

Not to take up for UKO, but have you ever heard of skin cancer, @roguemocha ?
Yes I’ve heard it mentioned before. But that’s why I said a few hours, 4-6 is fine, double digits hours every day are not and also said being in the sun is good for you and your skin changes to adapt hence tanning, but getting burned repeatedly is the real problem.

Half of my ancestors evolved around the 57th parallel, and the other half around the 48th parallel. Our Sicilian buddy Anth's ancestors are from the 37th parallel, which is the same as Kentucky. So I guess he can go outside but I can't.

My grandmother had her nose removed to keep skin cancer from killing her. She had to live 20ish year with a prothesis. I'll not take chances in that regard.

Anyone got any keto/low carb recommendations to mix up dinners? I tried fathead dough pizza and it was passable but far from great. I'm not sure if the better approach is to just have a cheat meal a week of actual good food like pizza, pasta, etc rather than trying to make a facsimile. But I'm willing to be convinced otherwise.

A protein and veggies every night gets old.

Yeah but I really believe the skin cancer thing is pushed way too hard. Sun is good for you and people lived in it for centuries and now we’re all supposed to be inside 22 hours a day? I don’t think so and it’s not good for you. That’s why I walk and bike everywhere I can, outside is so much better for you in every way.

Getting the majority of your vitamin D from supps is better than nothing but not much different than trying to get all your protein intake from protein shakes, it’s just not the same.

During Covid I went from having to use sunscreen all the time to being outside for three months every day to where my skin has adapted to where I don’t burn unless I’m outside for a looooooong time with no shirt or hat.

Most boat people don’t even wear sunscreen except zinc on the face and they’re in it every day. Sunscreen has, in many cases, shown to cause more cancer than the sun when used that often.

Most people in temperate climates like KY only need sunscreen on vacation and a few months a year, you all don’t need it from October through April. Slapping those chemicals all over your body every single day is no better than the sun if not worse imo.

**Non-Sun/Vitamin D Talk**

-Finally got back up to #217, really wanted to #220 but I’m ready to try a cut before I do a real one in late Feb/early March. Just want to see where I can get and how to get there.

Looks like a lot of boiled veggies and chicken in my future plus some fruit. Been smashing carbs lately and actually ready to stop, I feel so bloated every morning.

Sicilian side definitely has some ancestors from the low 30 parallels.

Not listening to gov't.....listening to my dermatologist, my licensed aesthetician, and my own case studies of pre-cancers being removed. I'm as sun worshipping as anyone, but know the dangers if I am not being cautious, using sun screen, etc. Your Vit-D from the sun will be beneficial in 10-20 minutes.

You may want to check your vanity at the door before it catches up w/ you.

In all honesty, I don’t give a single touch bubba. I’m not having kids and very unlikely to live past my 70s. What am I saving all this time and aging prevention for? I want to look great in my 30-40-50s and whatever I can do in my 60s is just fine.

Why do I care if I look 70 when I’m 90? Who gives a shit by then? You’re not out waxing 8 and 9s so why would I care if I look old when I’m you know OLD?

I’ve said a million times, rather live one day a lion than 1000 years a lamb.

Sunscreen is for you northerners bud, we live in it, it’ll be fine.

A “LICENSED” aethestician ooooooohhhhh damn, you that big time eh? 🙄. Is she also living in the 80s or just your gold chains and life perspectives?

My mom had a melanoma sliced off her neck a few years ago and I’ve used sunscreen religiously since I was in college. I’d love to get more sunshine (in reasonable doses) but an office job isn’t very conducive to that. Also, the way my daywalker genetics are set up…I just super dose vitamin D in winter and use a “happy light” periodically (those are clutch especially in the Ohio Valley, btw)

Reminds me of this.

If Goggins was evil part 2.

The ending is so good.

Yup, sunscreen the face and neck every morning with facial lotion with SPF 30 in it, done that forever. Heck I wear hoodies half the time anyway that protect my neck somewhat.

Again, for my body, if I can tell I’m getting a lot of sun or just daily precaution, I wear long sleeves and UV shirts. I just think wiping chemicals you have no idea what they are all over your body isn’t the best plan.

Florida (specifically, the Keys) has banned a bunch of sunscreens. The ones with aluminum, just like deodorant, are bad for you, no way rubbing aluminum all over you is good. And the others are banned because they kill the reefs.

And then there are the people that are never on boats and start spraying sunscreen all over the into the wind covering the people and the boat deck in slippery sunscreen, idiots. That’s another story though.

Most people don’t know this and just bring down whatever sunscreen they have as they don’t pay attention to it the couple times a year they need it.

I think I’m about to stop using beads in my laundry for the same reasons, it’s just tons of chemicals in my clothes.

-In other news, the Stretch Zone for 30 minutes was 🔥. But I’d rather do yoga than pay for that. It’s amazing but $220/month for 1x/week is ridiculous. It’s more expensive than a massage or yoga.

I'm a big fan of the long sleeve vented style fishing shirts if I'm out in the sun. They have an spf of 50 and cover most of my upper body. That and a good hat and I need very little sunscreen to prevent sunburns.

I actually thought you had some smarts and common sense....nope, you're a clueless dolt. Whatever...you be you. Good luck.

- take breaks from the sun, a solid 20 minutes in shade every 30-60 minutes spent in the sun.

- the damage you do in your youth is most causal... likely you've already baked the cake

At 68 years old, trying to avoid the old man slouched shoulders and tiny steps. Read somewhere that doing planks might help. Just finishished 3 sets of 60 second elbow planks. Very “painful” in a good way. Hope to add this routine to my resistance training a few times each week. Still doing the creatine after each workout.

Also, still enjoying everyone’s workout comments. Can’t compete with your workout intensity, but it keeps me motivated.

3 sets of 60 seconds... come on man. People in their 60's should be doing a LOT better than that. ;)
