Based on my review, so far, Robert Dillingham takes the most shots per minute of playing time of any player for UK under Cal, surpassing Malik Monk in 2016-2017. Dilly is clearly a volume-shooter, no question, in the mould of today's NBA guards.

We have four (4) very good guards this year and it's easy to see the number of shots they take, as we are definitely a guard-oriented team this season. I suppose that makes it easier for a good defensive team to game plan for us and explains how we can really struggle on off-shooting nights, like against South Carolina. In that game, we attempted 62 shots and the four (4) guards took 46 of them (74%), while the other five (5) players attempted only 16 shots (26%). The perimeter game is great when we're running and shooting well, but we definitely need to be able to go inside when match-ups and game situations require it.

Based on the metrics above, as many here have discussed, Reed Sheppard definitely needs to take more shots, as his PTS/FGA is pretty impressive !! His shot volume is too low. Hopefully, Reed will become more inclined to take the shots when he has them. The team really needs for him to do so.

NOTE: PTS/FGA include points scored at the free-throw line.

That Edwards stat is ugly. 406 minutes played, but the lowest PTS/FGA on the team (by far). Not far behind him is DJ, but he's at least been visibly and statistically improving (sans USC).

But a positive - Shep and Dillingham are averaging more minutes per game than Edwards!

What's not captured here in stats is Cal's bizarre substitution timing. Pulling players when they're hot, inserting Edwards when we're on a roll, taking the lead or closing the opponent's lead (USC for example), or just playing rotating players every 1-3 minutes (USC for example).

My worry is that now that Cal has a full and healthy roster, the rotations in and out are going to be painful. He's itching to tinker in late January, and maybe rightfully so given the talent of this roster from player 1-10. But damn if it doesn't muck up the entire flow of our offense. USC was a painful display of old typical Cal ball.

What these numbers suggest to me is that in a slow-down game against good teams, if we're going to have have 3/4 of our offense concentrated in the guards, we are very easy to defend and are pretty much one-dimensional. If we continue to play this way, as most here have emphasized, we simply MUST rebound and play defense.

My position is that we need a more-balanced offense attack that includes the inside-outside game, instead of an outside-outside game. 5-Out works well, until it doesn't. Mitchell needs to be more involved inside, but to my view, we need to find out in a hurry whether Biz Z and Bradshaw can regularly score down low. I need to be convinced that Big Z is not capable of playing down low and scoring on post moves, lobs and put-backs. It's obvious we have enough perimeter shooters.

Reports are that Dillingham is sick and may not play. Sheppard will definitely need to take more shots today, ten (10) minimum, I’d say.
