Eaglestaff scheduled Zoom w/ Cats.

I have mixed emotions; he seems like a good fit but the announcers making puns concerning his given name every time he hits a three will drive me insane. Okay, I admit that's a short trip.

My thoughts are, I'm fine eithbthis if Pope wants him. But I really only want high end midmajor and power conference transfers (as best we can). A low major transfer is fine, but we only need one or two of them, tops. If its this guy? I'm all for it. Just need to be cautious that at the end of the day, the team has as many high level players as possible.

I don't want him!
Way too streaky....
I'm with you, I feel there are better options out there. But Pope and experience might bring more consistency to his game. The big problem for me is I really think we need to get much better defensively.
Coming out of the portal ,Oweh wasn't 1/2 the player he is today. Pope really improved his game!

Well you need to get used to the lower tiers being the feeders first the bigger tiers. That’s eventually how this is all going to shake out.

I think Pope learned a valuable lesson after the injuries this year. You try to land as many legitimate ball handlers as possible, push for retention, but if you make a guy upset along the way due to lack of playing time, so be it.

It's a mercenary world now. Got to stack the roster as much as possible, and if this kid is our third or fourth guard fighting for that Kriisa role, I'm fine with it.

Maybe Pope think his game can be greatly improved and he can be a consistent scorer in UK

He could give 50 points in a night, almost no player in the nation has that ability. But he seriously lacks consistency.

Maybe Pope can make him a consistent scoring option

Most good shooters are streaky. Reeves, Grady, Brea all had stretches or games where they couldn’t hit the broad side of a barn. Just need those to be isolated.
Eaglestaff was also #1 player on scouting report …he won’t be #1 at UK…give him better looks with better players around him and also Pope offense will create better shots for him.

Almost no player can get 50 pts one night...

Maybe Pope think he can be a more consistent player... He has the best ceiling of portal players in scoring...

I don’t want guys happy sitting the bench for a paycheck which is what a lot of folks assume is going to happen.

Guys like this guy want to play and get paid. He know’s he is a commodity but I don’t think he’s going anywhere to be a “developmental piece” or a fourth or fifth option.

Yup. Which is one reason I'm hyped about our future. Because unless they just happened to get luckier than what is actually statistically possible, our staff has already proven they have a serious knack for plucking diamonds out of that lower tier rough.

I’m not this guys biggest fan but if pope wants him then let’s get him. I like kam Williams and Wilkerson a lot better
Are they mutually exclusive though?

I think there's an assumption that Pope has to be committed to playing Perry and Noah rotation minutes next year, but I'm not sold on that quite yet.

We know Lewis probably fills out the Kriisa role, but most are assuming Pope just wants two additional guards from the portal because of Lewis' presence. I'm not so sure. I could see Pope adding three guards/wings (one point guard, one combo, and one big guard/wing). I also think it's far from a given that Oweh returns to UK. I think he will quite possibly milk the draft process as long as possible (and who can blame him after the season he's had). Pope probably is preparing to add as many as three guards/wings in the outside chance that Oweh leaves for the NBA.

Pope's job is to be prepared as much as possible in order to win a national title, not make a bunch of role players happy.

I’m not saying he’s terrible, but I can’t help but feel like those couple of outlier scoring nights are leading to some hype for this guy that wouldn’t be there based on his usual level of play. I think there’s probably better all-around players who either already are available or soon will be.

That being said, Pope and his staff have earned some benefit of the doubt in their player evaluations after the success they had this year with guys who weren’t that highly rated for the most part. If they want him, I’ll assume there’s a good reason.

I can see us adding 4-5 portal players: a center, 2 fours, a wing, a point guard. I could see him only adding one player at the the 1,2, or 3 but I don't know how we could only add 2 players at the 4/5 spots with only Garrison, Moreno, and Noah to play those spots. Unless Pope thinks Noah or Moreno will be too good to not play next year.

Yes, 3pt shooting is more streaky than 2's or FTs. But he is way more streaky than any of those.
IMO, Robinson was too streaky this year, especially the first 1/2 of the year.

2 years ago, when many on this board were complaining that Reeves was "too streaky", I did a detailed analysis showing that he was "not too streaky", that he wasn't any more streaky than other top rated 3pt shooters that year.
Over the past week, I've posted a couple of times a similar summary of how this kid "is too streaky".

This isn't all of it, just the high/low points:
- He is a 35.9% 3pt shooter, 46.9% 2pt shooter, and averaged 18.9 pts, in 33 games.
- He had 2 huge games 51, and then 40 vs Alabama, making 8-18 from 3 in both games
- In the other 31 games, he averaged 17.2, and made just 34.3% of his 3's
- In 18 games, he made <40% of his shots
- in 13 games he made <30% of his 3's
- in the 3 games surrounding the 51pt game, he scored 20 total points, and went 0-10 from 3.

How does that compare to J.Robinson?
- He made 37.6% of his 3's, and 53.2% of his 2's, over 24 games
- in 10 games (1 of his last 9) he made <30% of his 3's
- in 10 games he made <40% of his shots

You won't ever see me complain about getting a shooter. As long as we got other dudes that can drive and kick.

I love this kid as a foundational piece to next year's roster. He looks like the type of guy who becomes your third or fourth option.

Oweh is your bona fide stud, and then hopefully UK can add a guy like Wilkerson as the #2 option.
No one would have expected Oweh to do what he did this year either. Definitely want this guy, he's shown he can do it against big time programs, and with better players around him and a coach like Pope guiding him, sky is the limit for this kinda guy.

It's crazy that people don't want this guy. Dropped 51 points in a game and also 40 against Bama. Wanna know why he's streaky? Because he's legitimately the only scoring threat for his team. If he's shooting those splits being the only guy (Meaning taking a lot of bad shots) there's no reason he can't be a high 30's- mid 40's 3 point percentage shooter on a team where he's not going to he the focal point. He can create his own shot as well, something this team severely lacks since Robinson went down. Although Brea has improved in that category.

You could say that same thing about most of the top perimeter players in the portal.
35.9% from 3 and very streaky does not do it for me.

Me either really, I mean I’d take him because he obviously has serious scoring ability in him but I’d prefer a couple options ahead of him but I’ll defer to the staff to get who they think will fit best.
Deference to the professional coaches in roster decisions is reasonable.
I recommend it.
Well done sir.

I'm more concerned about his negative defensive efficiency rating. Especially when compared to his offense efficiency rating. He gives up more points than he scores per 100 possessions. No thanks. I trust Pope, and maybe this is an off the bench Almanor style role to go big at Guard (he's 6'6" afterall) and there's nothing to get bent out of shape about. But surely this is a foundational project spark plug off the bench style piece and he's working on studs, but locking in the end of the bench style guys first in case we miss on the high profiles?

Every kid in the portal that averages 15+/gm is the only or top scoring threat on his team.
So are you saying we should raise every shooter's %'s 3-5% points?

His last 4 games: 0, 14, 51, 6
His 3pt shooting in those last 4 games: 0-4, 0-4, 8-18, 0-2
Even in the 14 pt game, he was 5-14 overall, which is not good.
So he was unplayable in HALF of those games.

The 10 games after he put 40 on Bama (in 30 shots),
he went 14-59 from 3, that is 23.7% over 10 game stretch.
That is nowhere close to acceptable.

That is a big reason too.
You have to defend? Not everyone has to be a lock down defender, but you can't be a liability out there either.
