Dropped from 16th to 17th on Kenpom

Kenpompom is the phoniest of phony numbers.

He doesn’t count offensive rebounds as a possession.

So a guy can tip a ball and a controlled tip is a rebound and a shot. But it’s not even a possession according to Kenpompom.

How does a player shoot without possession?

Only in the world of Kenpompom is that possible.

Phony nerd numbers.
Because the other team never has possession on an offensive rebound. It’s pretty simple to understand.

All we have to do is play 1/2 of good defense. We have done that the past two games. If we do that we are winning.
I’ll have to wait until we play a legit good defensive team to determine if we can get by with playing defense 1/2 of the game.

You can't really judge our defense from this game. It looked pretty good the first half. The team just coasted on cruise control the second half of the game. Wait until we are in a tight game the entire game to determine if our defense is improving.

I think the team just quit once they got up huge. Gave up like 35 points in what was effectively junk time once they went up 30. Not gonna bother reading much into it other than a learning opportunity that our guys have to play every minute of every game.

What are you even on about with this? The KenPom numbers absolutely account for offensive rebounding. It’s how the Oscar led teams had solid offensive efficiency numbers despite often failing the eye test.

If you mean the formula doesn’t consider an offensive rebound to start a brand new possession separate from the initial missed shot, nobody categorizes things that way. Your complaint is meritless.

No but TN and Auburn will want to beat us much worse than what UNC or Miss St wanted to.
Sounds like backtracking to me. You said wait to see until we play a legit top defense. We already did and won. Just accept the checkmate and move on.

Simple fact is we will drop 90 on Auburn and Tennessee just like everyone else.

I think we have a chance to score 90 on TN at home but not on the road or not at Auburn.

There is no magical limiting factor or quirk preventing a team from winning the championship.

Take the 2014 team, for example. As an 8 seed, they played passable defense in two games, one of which was in the championship, and won the rest through brute offensive force. They won 3 games despite their opponent scoring 1.2 ppp or more.

The "championship teams need x quality to win" tends to also correlate with just being an elite team. Most elite teams are very good on offense and defense. That's why they are elite.

The 2014 UCONN team had the fortune of having Cal as the opposing coach in the NC game. That’s a pretty big advantage even with Kevin Ollie as your coach.

College basketball has never been the way it is now.

There are 10 teams scoring as high as the #1 scoring team from last year.

There are 40 teams averaging 80ppg.

Last year there were 12.

Take it a step further...there are 123 teams averaging 75ppg.

Last year there were 74.
So there are a lot of shitty defenses out there, and we still can't break into the Top 50.

That says more about the road environment at Tennessee and Auburn than it does about their defense.
Both have good (efficient) offenses to go along with elite defenses. Typically that means less points off turnovers and less points in transition for their opponents.

And we will deal with it. We’re everybody’s Super Bowl when we roll into town. Come on.
Cal is fortunate to coach in a football conference.
UK is the only school in the SEC that cares more about basketball than football outside of Vandy that doesn’t care about either.

Defense can get better but they really do need to work on it. But right now I don't really care about any of that stuff, just win games and worry about Ken pom etc in March.
statements like this make no sense, If you wait until march to worry about Kenpom, its literally to late. The rankings are determined by what you did DURING the season. Like yesterdays game and the one before that and the after that. Waiting until march is like waiting until march to start conditioning for games. Makes ZERO sense.
