Do we have any TEs on the team?

No catches after two games by a TE. Not even sure a pass has been thrown their way yet. I watch the NFL and see how valuable the TE can be and we never use ours. Why? I thought we had two different guys who were ready to contribute. Guess not. Sure seems like our TE should be open with the talent in the WR corps this year.

Yes we have, and yes we have attempted a throw to him. He's just incredibly valuable as a blocker, and we don't need to emphasize an offense on him just yet. No need putting the entire work-load on him as a true freshman. I think we'll see him used more in the passing game this week because of Florida being weak against the pass in the middle of the field, specifically when their linebackers have to drop back into coverage.
Ease him into it, look for positives. We just beat USC at their stadium without opening the entire playbook.

There was at least one pass thrown to him in the middle of the field. He was well covered, but got his hands on the ball, but could not pull it in.

Not sure if this is a serious post or not. CJ Conrad has been on the field for the vast majority of the snaps and has been invaluable both as a run blocker and an extra pass protector...often lined up in the backfield as part of the diamond formation. He was also VERY close to hauling in a spectacular TD catch over 3 guys at SC.

They are freshmen, and they have blocked like seniors. Dissing them this quick might make you look bad any week now.

I'm not sure if this is satire or serious. Conrad was a target at least once in the endzone, went up between 3 defenders and almost pulled it in.

Other than that, we have used our TEs primarily as blockers. Conrad has played on the line and in the backfield. On Boom's 75 yard TD run he block the WLB (#7) to spring Boom for the endzone. Actually he blocked #7 into the safety, so he took out 2 defenders.

Conrad almost made a great catch between 3 defenders for a TD .....I also watched Long when he was in....our TE's are dam great blockers.

Long patiently waited and hit a 2nd block that sprung JOJO for a long run, pure discipline.

Well this thread didn't work out well for the OP.

He almost came down with an amzing catch to go along with all the other stuff he's been doing.

We forced a ball to the TE Conrad on playaction and we're lucky it wasnt picked! Guys with the "throw it to the TE at all cost" crap seriously let's give it a rest. They will catch their passes.

I know the coaches like what he is doing and blocking is a huge part of the game. Last night on a replay Witten of the Cowboys had an awesome block and set the edge. But for years I have not been able to understand why we can't release the Tight End over the middle for a 5/6 yard pas play, its like they just flat out refuse to run such a play. Especially last season every play was to the sideline, would have helped balance it out.

I really believe its in the package and we will see it soon.

The pass in the end zone was high where only Conrad could get it, he made a great catch but the DB made a great breakup as he was coming down. Our TEs are going to be really good.

Gamecockcat? You are either one or the other, a gamecock or a KY Widcat, since you used all the first word and butchered our mascot, I'll say you're not a fan. Of course, not knowing about CJ Conrad is enough.

I couldnt agree more. That pass was forced around 3/4 defenders too and while high was a dangerous pass imo.

Im on your side, our TEs will be great, no need to force feed them yet. [thumb2]

Not Conrad, he was thrown to once in the corner of endzone.

May not have been PT's best decision but it was a hell of a pass only Conrad could get to and he was able to get two hands on the ball but it was broken up by one of the 3 defenders draping him.

If you want to watch TEs catch the ball watch the Kansas City Chiefs. They have not thrown a TD pass to a WR in 20 games. The TEs had 3 TD receptions yesterday.

Of course I know about CJ - that's what the whole question was about. We use him as a blocker about 95% of the time (and he's doing a really good job). But, in obvious passing downs, is there some reason that PT doesn't seem to ever even look at the TE? I mean, we've played 2 games now and the only pass any of the responders on this thread can recall is ONE pass into triple coverage that CJ almost pulled in. That's ONE pass in two games. Sure seems like the middle of the field ought to be open with all the talent we have on the outside. I'm not saying 'throw to the TE all the time'. Just once in a while, especially if they're close to being as good at catching as they are at blocking. They're helping the team, for sure. Just thought we'd see more of PT working the middle of the field and, by extension, would involve TEs more. Think they could be a very effective weapon and we just haven't used one to much extent for a long, long time.

Maybe he is a tackle skill wise. Can't catch it? We heard about our tends being a big part of our Air Raid but to date it been bs. Just a blocking back. Long is also playing a little but not getting any balls.

Well, if you are going to throw to the TE, you gotta have him in the game. In 43 first half snaps the Cats were in a TE set 10 times. Most came in the RZ on the FG drive in early in the second half; a few more in short yardage situations. This is not going to be an offense that "features" the TE as a receiver.

Peace

We still have barely opened our playbook. I too miss our years of having big body receivers for those easy 6-15 yard pick-ups. Tamme was a treasure for sure.

You know that tight ends do other things beside catching the ball?

Ala Baker, who was hit with the 6 yard pass numerous times
