D-League

Update: The analysts are reporting Stoops will stay at Kentucky.

Despite the win yesterday, I’m torn about that. I think he’s topped out at Kentucky. I appreciate that hes gotten the program to the level of consistent second or third tier bowls. But I don’t think he can take the Cats to the next level. Maybe no one can in the SEC. But I’m ready to see UK at least try.

My goodness. If you weren’t watching the Iron Bowl you missed an almost unbelievable escape by Alabama. 4th and forever with seconds to go down 4 and they complete a TD in the last inch of the end zone.

Makes the SEC championship game enormous. Bama wins, and I think the SEC gets two in the playoffs —Georgia would have the “best” loss of all one-loss teams.
Anything can happen in the Iron Bowl. Remember that missed kick return a few years ago?

Good morning from Anneta KY. Currently 40°F and partly cloudy. Cold front moving in. Upper 20s expected tonight.

Awesome trip yesterday. Caught several channel cats. Couple saugers and smallmouths also in the mix.

Shifting gears, daughter's radiator found a tire/wheel out in the road. Thankfully, she was unhurt.

Wishing all a blessed Sunday

Good morning D-League.

Checking in before a morning walk.

A very satisfying day of football yesterday with an unexpected Cats win by far the highlight.

The Big Question: Can the SEC get TWO teams in the Final Four?

I think Michigan and the winner of Washington and Oregon are locks.

That leaves Georgia, Texas, Florida State and Alabama alive for two slots. Maybe Ohio State.

If Alabama wins, and Texas gets beat by Oklahoma State (I see an upset there) then you’d have Alabama and Georgia with a better loss by far and each with much better wins than Florida State. And Alabama would have the edge over Ohio State, as would Georgia. Would the Committee have the balls to dump the ACC champ? I actually think they might. Of course, Louisville could make it easy by beating FSU.

Have a good day folks.
The only strike against Alabama is the early loss to Texas. If they go on strength of schedule then it's a no-brainer. If they go on head to head matchups then it might be a problem but if Bama beats UGA then what? I can't imagine UGA being cut out of the picture.

I think Uga is a lock. Two loss AL has no chance. Despite losing QB, an undefeated FSU will get in over TX imo. They showed strength on the road in comeback yesterday. Net, I predict (not hard) MI/GA/FSU/WA

I think his flirtation hurts him/us with players & recruits going forward. They gonna believe him if he says he's staying? Certainly will be used against him imo. Yes, he's done a good job. Question the future now.

I think that you named them but the strength of schedule should be considered and FSU and WA have played a bunch of whusses.

I read on a Cardinal baseball board quite a bit. FYI for you baseball guys, they are discussing former Cards as to who are the buttholes and who are the nice guys. From that discussion, it seems in interactions with fans (adults and kids), Mark McGwire is thought of as the nicest Cardinal of them all.

I can't remember the relief pitcher's name at the moment, but one of my older brother's friends became good friends with him, he hung out with some of the players a few times. this was around 2005-2007. Anyway, he said all the guys were great guys, didn't act like they were better because they were professional baseball players...expect one, he said Mark Mulder a lefty pitcher acted like 'you aren't good enough to talk to me'. Kinda funny cause Mulder sucked for the Cardinals.

I also know 2 people that have met Scott Rolen and have said he is the most humble guy you could meet, and Rolen does a lot of quiet charity. Not trying to get attention.

Interesting thing about Rolen, a Phillies scout once said 'he is the best baserunner I have seen'...now when we think of baserunners we think of fast guys, guys that steal bases...the scout said, Scott Rolen never gets thrown out at 3rd base...meaning, if he is on first and the ball is hit somewhere, if he tries to make it to third his instincts were always right.

Can't even imagine how sick the Auburn fans are...they have the lead and drop a punt with 4 minutes or so to go that gives Alabama new life and then the last play...how does the DB let that happen?

I was driving through Bama one time about 15 years ago and it was June or July and I turned on the radio and I swear there was a sports show talking about who is going win the Iron Bowl this year and people were calling in...game isn't till late November! They were talking Iron Bowl in the middle of the summer haha.

I was a big Rolen fan. Hated the injury toward the end of his Cardinal tenure. He was never the same afterwards. Btw, Pitino recruited him for UK in hoops.

AP Top 25 in football out for the final week and I noticed something interesting.

Out of the Top 13 teams in the final poll —TWELVE will either be in the SEC (total of 7) or the B-10 next year…Only Florida State is an exception. (That’s because Texas and Oklahoma are moving to the SEC and Washington and Oregon to Big 10)

Certainly glad Kentucky is on the right side of that divide but it’s going to make college football a different sport with such a huge majority of all the quality teams in two conferences.

Good morning D-League.

Back to work after a very nice break. Rainy and cold in the east. An early taste of winter.

Big week for the Cats, at least potentially. Would love to see a win over ranked Miami tomorrow. And would love to see Bradshaw play (unlikely) and Ivisic cleared (who knows.)

Gotta get a jump on work. I’ll catch up with you all later.

@berniecarbo

Not sure if you have seen it, but Netflix had a thing on Yogi Berra (originally from St. Louis) I thought was pretty good.
Haven't seen it. Read a lot about Yogi though. He was childhood neighbors of Joe Garagiola. Both were catchers. The Cards offered Joe 500$ and Yogi 250$ and Yogi signed with the Yankees because the Cards wouldn't match Joe's offer.

You are really good source of history, they mentioned what you wrote in the documentary/show on Netflix about him...but the way the show tells it is Branch Rickey who was in charge of the Cardinals at the time knew Yogi was the better player but although it hadn't been announced yet...Rickey knew he was leaving the Cardinals to take over the Dodgers. The show basically says Rickey was hoping Yogi wouldn't sign with the Cardinals and that his plan was to sign him as a Dodger (basically screwing the Cardinals on purpose) but by the time it took him to switch jobs Yogi had already signed with the Yankees.

Yes, I've also heard that.

So, ESPN has this thing called the ALLSTATE Playoff Predictor where you can run scenarios based on the winners of the football conference championship games...

One result: Florida State, Texas, Washington and Michigan win their games -- along with Alabama over Georgia.

According to ESPN, if that happens, THE SEC IS SHUTOUT of the playoffs. No one-loss Georgia with the only loss to Alabama. No one-loss Alabama, with a win over #1 Georgia.

I think that is nonsense. If it happens, the SEC will revolt and shut down the Committee. To me, if Alabama beats Georgia in a close game, BOTH should be in.

Best chance for the SEC Dream Scenario of both Georgia and Alabama advancing: Upsets by Louisville and Oklahoma State. That's a longshot, but neither FSU or Texas looked unbeatable Saturday.

Because Texas beat Bama, I could see a scenario where Bama wins and doesn't get in.

I think win or lose in the SEC championship game Georgia is in the playoffs. They would have to lose by 30 not to get in.

You'd think. But ESPN's calculator has a few scenarios in which they are out of they lose -- including the most likely scenario based on probability of favorites winning in the other Power conferences - Michigan, Oregon, Florida State, Texas.

I bet a lot of sports, I usually try to read at least 3 or 4 articles before betting a game...some games if you have watched the teams a lot I don't read much other than checking injury updates...but ESPN's predictions on gamecast doesn't seem very accurate at all, I don't even look at it when considering a bet. Also, money matters...and the SEC is the football giant. I will change my prediction slightly, if Georgia loses by double digits...maybe...maybe the SEC gets shut out, but I just don't see it happening. Georgia loses 31-27...I still think they are a lock in the playoffs.

They are back to back champs...a close loss to Bama...that committee doesn't have the balls to keep them out.

Georgia and Bama would beat any of those team with a possible exception of Michigan.

Will Bryce Harper go down as a choker if he doesn't win a ring? Great player, it's a team sport, great hair, his numbers are HOF worthy, but what will his rep be?
I guess anything is possible, but it would be unfair. His WS was mediocre, but other post season stats are excellent. A person can make a case for Ted Williams as the greatest hitter ever and he never won a WS.

Any shotgun collectors/hunters in the D-League?

My dad and I used to go quail hunting every single day of the season until I left Kentucky at 21...I haven't been since...The last time I was home earlier this month, my dad insisted I take back with me his favorite gun: An L.C. Smith 12 gauge double-barrel. I don't know how old it is, but I have a clear memory of going with him to buy it when i was a kid in the mid-1960s, and it was already an antique gun as I recall, but in beautiful shape. They made them between 1912-1950...This one is field grade, but it really good condition.

When we started hunting together, he let me use the L.C. Smith. It had great balance, and I did well with it. He bought me an Ithaca Model 37 pump a couple years later, I think as a way to reclaim the L.C. Smith...

It was bittersweet to have dad pretty much order me to take the gun. It was his way at 92 of making sure it got in the right hands.

My dad bought me a single shot H and R 410 when I was 11 so I'd be ready to go hunting with him when I turned 12. I gave it to my daughter last year. She lives on a small ranch in Florida. At the time, she covered a large area in Florida for a major insurance company doing OSHA work. She was traveling alone, so I got her a small revolver and made sure she knew what she was doing. With these tired eyes, her and her husband were both better shots than me.

I have a single shot 410, some Pakistan brand. My Dad had a double-barrel 12 gauge (Long Tom) out of Teddy Roosevelts gun factory. It was to be my older brothers but it was pilfered quickly by his second wife when my Dad died.. (When she was growing up her nickname was Crow if that tells you anything.) She is my age if she's still alive living down in Harrogate somewhere. Her Mom's name was Blanche, Blanche Laws. The filth I could tell about... Just some pure white trash. (Apologies, it brought back memories...)

Good evening D, still busy working with my glass, great discussion shotguns and St. Louis Cardinals don't get much better. My shotgun is a Double barrel Stevens 20 gauge. I've had it since I was 14, 58 years, hard to believe. This one replaced the one I lost in our boating accident we had in 1967, where I lost my brother. I still have my dad's single barrel 20 gauge shot gun that he had when he was young, it will kick the crap out of you!!!
