D-League

Evening D
Didn’t mean to go MIA again but some crazy stuff has gone down the last week
First I’m gonna ask for you to pray for my brothers best friend. John is like another brother; part of our family. John was taken to the hospital on Wednesday with a dissected aortic aneurysm. They got him into surgery in time. He’s stable but he has a long way to go. Only 49 years old.
I had to go tough love on my middle child. I ran up some debt to help them out and they didn’t learn. So now I have to step back and let him sink or swim. I’m scared to death for them ..and what will happen. They have a 1 yr old and are facing eviction. I won’t let them be homeless but that’s it
To top it off, we’re in a position to maybe buy a house, finally. A lot has to come together for it to happen and to be honest I’m scared to death.
So any prayers and/or positive vibes would be appreciated
Prayers sent up Bev!🙏

Hadn't talked to you fellas in a while. Wanted to say Merry Christmas. Had COVID and was in the ICU for a while, so this Christmas I am thinking of things that are more important than Cal losing to Josh freakin' Pastner.

Regardless, Happy Holidays.
Yikes! Sorry to hear. Happy you're better. Stay safe.

Good morning from ATX. Currently 44°, clear, dry and calm. Expecting 70°F for today's high. Loving it.

Yeah, it appears KY men's basketball is broken. Yesterday's loss was a disaster. Seth Greenburg from ESPN sounded angry when discussing the condition of our team. Next up: Notre Dame.

Wishing all our fellow D-League members happiness and health.

Good Monday morning D

Waking up to cloudy skies and and 55° with chance of rain 70% until 9:00. It is wet out there now. Our high will reach 63°F and temperatures will drop into the 40's overnight. It is winter down here. The sun will peak out a little today. Years ago if the sun did not shine during the day you got a free newspaper. Nobody takes the paper anymore so that is another tradition that has dropped off.

It is probably a good thing there are no fans in Rupp Arena to speak of this years because the boos would be deafening. I know how loud Rupp can get when people are boing and this team would be booed back to the Wildcat Lodge. People are laughing at us including the Georgia Tech players as the game ended. Ouch. I hope Cal takes a look in the mirror of life this morning and gets on the right track. He is lost.

Wishing all our fellow D-League members good health, good spirits and a car that will start when it is 20 below.

Praying for you Bko. Sometimes it seems like life comes at you at all angles rather than one thing at a time. Don't why that is, we'd all prefer one at a time....or none. Hopefully the 'tough love' will help more than all the other things you've done for them. Sometimes that's the best, but hardest, option.

Today is a day that was very solemn and sacred when I was a boy. I was born during WWII and my early childhood was full of stories about the Japs and how evil they were. I saw former POWs of the Japanese who had scars for life due to the torture. Mentally and physically. That generation had the will to fight and were willing to die for freedom and many did. All of my uncles served and one uncle joined the Navy on Dec 8, 1941 when he was 16 years old. He was not of legal age to drink and some states today he couldn't drive a car. But he was willing to fight in world war

I am posting a picture of him to show how young these boys were that volunteered to go to the South Pacific and fight the Empire of Japan. Just kids. We must never forget.

Prayers Bko, family issues are some of, if not the hardest things we face in life. We pray things will work out and things will end

We missed you BBH and I trust you are 100% over COVID and have complete recovery. I agree health and family far exceed any embarrassment we may receive over Cal putting a poor product on the court. May God be with you and Merry Christmas to you and your family

Good morning D-League.

Prayers to BKO's friend and for BBH to complete his recovery.

Can't lie -- I found myself really down after the basketball debacle last night. I've decided to take a big step back. I have so much to be grateful for in life that I can't let the doings of a bunch of 20-year-old kids playing a game I was once pretty good at but haven't played in years affect my mood or my mental framework.

Pearl Harbor day was still a pretty big deal when I was a youing kid -- it was only 20 or so years in the past -- so I still say a prayer for those lost. It's hard for me to grasp that when I was 5 in 1961, Pearl Harbor was as recent almost as 9/11 is now. It puts into perspective how real it was for our parents' generation.

I hope its a good day, folks.

Something is definitely wrong, when lifelong, passionate UK fans no longer care.
That is the truth. I guess many are conditioned to poor play and just take it as part of the Cal system and process.

He needs to cut out blaming the fans though. Unless he wants to dig his own grave. The fans demand good basketball and they invest in good basketball. We understand you will lose a few games but losing three in a row you should have won and looking pathetic in doing it is not good Coach Cal. The fans did not do this. Take responsibility Coach or you will never figure this out. You are the issue

Good morning D! First prayers for the D!!!!

Old Cord can't take many more days like yesterday! I delivered 2 more TBL, one heart and one shield. To see a mother unwrap each one of these and hold them each next to heart and crying her eyes out was just heart breaking!!!! She had her daughter, Mrs. M and ole Cord letting the emotions go!!!! I have heard that art is supposed to stir your emotions, ours was in a blender!!!! I think part of it with me is, that she took something that I had made by my hands, caused that to happen struck something deep inside me. I have never had anything like that happen before!!!

I hope the D has a great day and please pray for my family, my D-I-L tested positive Friday, two youngins and my son a police officer!!! She works in a nursing home and is a PT there.

Cold and cloudy December day in Smiths Grove.

I had a cousin who was shot down flying in a B-17 to Pearl Harbor the afternoon of December 7. He was shot down by friendly fire. The boys on the ground shot at any airplane they saw. He or the crew were not hurt but the plane was ruined and at the time the U.S. needed ever damned plane that they had.

My childhood best friend Ed Greene lost two uncles on the USS Arizona.

Nearly all of my family on both sides were shaped and scarred by World War II. I grew up with heros and very few spoke of it. My father in law always said that if he ever saw a Jap he would kill him. He survived the Kamakazie's in the Pacific. He absolutely hated anything Japanese after that and until he died in 2006. My father in laws buddy, who ran a 5" gun, jumped overboard after one 12 hour kamakazie attack. He chose death rather than another kamakazie attack. Things were rough.

Was it Pearl Harbor or D-Day that Obama never recognized? I seem to remember one (or both) he totally skipped...first prez to do that.

I have a little conundrum with the term 'Greatest Generation'. I had, I think, 9 uncles and my dad that went to war in WWII. Thankfully all came back...a couple wounded (my dad twice)...all alive and in one piece.
But here's my question. Were they the 'Greatest Generation' ......or their parents who raised them to be that way?
After WWII the generation that went to war, came home and raised families, and many of their sons/daughters were of the 'hippie generation' and the like that were the forerunner of what we have now.

I posed that question to my mom (gone now) about 20 years ago, she stopped and thought for awhile, and said...you know I don't know, you may be right.

Bert I am not sure if we have talked about this before or not? I am huge John Carpenter fan who of course is from Bowling Green. The OG Halloween is my favorite movie and there are tons of references to South Central Kentucky in those movies. Including that Michael Myers escapes from Smith's Grove Sanitarium. In Halloween II they talk about going to Russellville and Hardin County. Haddonfield, Michael Myers' hometown, is in Warren County. Anyway, random facts for the day.

The war in the South Pacific seems to have scarred the veterans even more than the war against the Germans. But maybe not, war is war. I remember the uncle whose photo I posted took me to town when I was about 7 or 8 years old. He was still in the Navy but was not in uniform. He was home on leave. He told me to pick out a toy and he would buy it for me. I picked out a little car made out of tin and handed it to him at the cashier.

He looked at it and on the bottom it read "Made In Japan". He threw it across the store and hollered "I fought those SOB's and I am not buying their junk". The Japanese were selling junk in those days right after the war. We were helping them to rebuild their economy but they were sending cheap tin back to us in the form of toys and what nots. My uncle was not buying any of it. Men back then were tough and certainly not political correct. I doubt they could live in today's world.

I think Cal is now in the stage of "Screw these hicks. I'm gonna do what I want to do. What are you gonna do about it?"

More than 4900 seamen were killed by kamakazi attacks alone at Okinawa.

When I was Commissioner and Mayor of Smiths Grove my big project was getting the records of the Smiths Grove Cemetery up to par and changing the applicable Ordinances on the cemetery up to date and made firm enough that it would be hard for my replacement in office to change them.

The first order of business was to remove the large species trees that would damage monuments etc. I finally got the ordinance passed to remove all the big trees (nearly $20,000 project).

The first tree that we cut down was a large sugar maple at the main entrance. (The maple is to the extreme right of the entrance:
CEM46770385_112060948078.jpg
) It had a hollow trunk and low and behold in the hollow of the tree was a large metal box. Inside the box was a journal wrapped in plastic. The journal was filled with folks names and addresses from all over the U.S. and many other countries that were on this massive scavenger hunt all based on John Carpenters books and movies. We kept the box and journal. I assume it is still at city hall.

After we cut the tree down I got a lot of bad emails. But since 2011 no tree has fallen and destroyed a single monument. We had trees in the cemetery growing around old monuments. No more. The asshole mayor fixed things!

Also, one thing about our cemetery is that most of the early folks buried there are from one area of Virginia. My folks and many others that settled this area got land warrants for fighting in the Revolution. My folks got hundreds of acres in this area. We came in large groups as the Shawnee Indians were allied with the British to kill Europeans in this area.

My 5th great grandfather was Patrick Henry's lawyer. The youngest children or the girls got the "western" land. My 4th great grandfather was the youngest child so he got the Kentucky land. He came to this area with Patrick's sister, Susannah. She is in the Smiths Grove Cemetery. Her brother in law was the third governor of Kentucky. Her brother Patrick was the 1st and 3rd governor of Virginia.
