What is going on in California right now reminds me as to why I would not live there. The people build million dollar home in a dry desert like condition with high winds common and then wonder why wild fire burn their houses down. Some places on earth were not meant for habitation unless you are a nomad and move your tent around. God bless and my prayers are with them. I trust the loss of life is only minimal because houses can be rebuilt but we only have one of us. It is a horrible thing to have to go through.
There is iron in your words. Most vegetative communities of the arid southwest, west of the continental divide are fire climax, burning regularly (20-30 year cycles) and accordingly hazardous places to live. Fires can create their own winds and can reach a 1000 degrees roaring through a vegetated canyon or up a vegetated slope with devastating results. That is a major reason it is wise to keep the majority of these lands under federal administration and managed with multiple-use sustained yield management practices. These fires are going to burn. The longer between fires the hotter they burn. Smokey has made a mess of things. The greatest use for these lands are as recreation escapes from the ecological black holes of urban environments. We've known this for over 50 years. We're actually getting dumber. Link

How true.

The arid areas where scrub growth accumulates is as dangerous in losing your house or life as building you house on a river bank.

Marginal lands should be inhabited wisely instead of haphazardly.

Our Cats survived SIU last night. We must step up the defense and play more unselfishly. Saw it a couple times with good passes which led to buckets + assists. Need more.

Y'all behave.

Survived is the proper word.

Those same places that burn now have burned a million times before and they will burn a million times after this one. This is just another Earth process that Man will not triumph over. Heat, fuel, oxygen = fire. That recipe will never change.

They have ran around and extinguished the small fires as quickly as possible for so many years that the amount of fuel has increased to the point that they now get the huge fires.

Remember when Yellowstone burned? How they told us at the time that it was gone forever? Remember the next Spring when they told us that Yellowstone was more beautiful than ever? The old stuff has to burn so there can be new growth.

Once again, people need to tend to their immediate environment instead of wanting to change the way the Earth works. Clear out trees and brush from the vicinity of your tinderbox house. Install a system to keep your roof wet in case of a fire. Move somewhere else after you remove all the vegetation from the hillside to prevent a fire. Hopefully before the impending mudslide. Help us help you.

  • Good Morning, D-Leagueanites, Wildcats and Lurkers.
  • 36º when I went to the deck. Warmed up to 43º, but it is a cold 43º. Too cold to stay out there. Hands got numb.
  • Listened to the 2nd half. That was better, not much, but we did win by 12. SIU. I know Seniors and all that, but SIU? 19 boards for that kid from Jamaica, Richards. Green was better. All of those TOs.
  • We've got the Vols in a little while. You'd better fasten those chin straps.
  • Watched the last quarter of the Louisville/Syracuse game. The Cards were hopeless and hapless.
  • Take care.
  • Carry on.

This makes way too much sense to ever be considered by tree huggers and environmental wackos. There was a reason my grandfather cleared out brush under his trees and had a huge cleared area between his groves and his house. Lightning striking a tree and causing a fire in the brush would have destroyed everything he worked to build. The old timers understood nature.
