Forrest, Stuart, Mosby and Morgan literally ran circles around the Union army until attrition set in...the South blockaded, simply couldn't replace it's losses, while the Union mined a seemingly endless supply of recruits in northern harbors, fresh off the boat from Ireland, for not much more than the cost of a meal.

DW's GGF (we're old) roDE in the 6th KY with Morgan thru southern IN & OH above Cincy. Tried to cross back across the OH River into WV but was captured.

Union had a minimum pay level regardless of where you were from.

DW's upteenth GGF (Hurrigan?) came over from Ireland as a teenager and shortly thereafter joined GW's Continental Army in a/the sharpshooter company. They were dispatched to NY to fight in the battle of Saratoga. His side won.

They had a little help from their friends - like 80K natives that had a beef with their Aztec overlords.

Well horses, real military training, armor and guns help a lot as well for sure.

Can you imagine in 1805 traveling across the world by boat to fight in Libya? That’s insane. It’s wild we have troops in the Middle East 365 days a year but 220 years ago? That’s nuts.

I mean, literally no one would believe the things you saw.

The western union army was made up of midwesterners and southerners from Tenneesee, Kentucky, and Missouri (it was southern back then). They were much more hard and tough than the eastern immigrant army. Which isn't to say the eastern army didn't have hard fighters too. They did, the iron brigade, 20th maine, etc etc.
