Cool civil war genealogy stories

I enjoy Rev War stuff more than CW. None of my ancestors here that early though (all arrived 1818-1857.). DW's 3X or4X gr-grandfather was an Irish immigrant in his late teens who fought in GW's sharpshooter company, mainly in NJ. However, they were detached to go & fight at Saratoga.
visit the Saratoga battlefield. I highly recommend it. You can do a hiking trail with interpretive signs through it. It was hugely important in that it convinced the French to assist us in the war.

While I do agree with that ^^^^^^...

...it is an often forgotten fact that Frankfort was the only Union state capital to be captured by the confederate army during the Civil War...which they did in the Fall of 1862. They only held it for about a month but they did “officially” swear in a governor.

So for a month or so the state of Kentucky was technically under confederate “control”. While there were several secessionists in Frankfort at the time that supported the coup...most of the citizens & the bulk of the state government officials supported the North.
They supported the union because they felt like staying in the union would give them the best chance to keep their slaves. Once Lincoln allowed black troops many Kentuckians felt betrayed. Sherman said Kentucky could never be trusted to be loyal and was crawling with spies.

My fathers side of the family are Lee's and allegedly it traces back to Robert E Lee's family. I have honestly never dug into it to be sure. The main reason I haven't is because if it was true, some folks like popquiz, would say I am racist for it and I don't feel like defending myself to idiots.
Sherman was as much a racist as Lee was.

"If they design to protect themselves against negroes & abolitionists I will help; if they propose to leave the Union on account of a supposed fact that the northern people are all abolitionists like Giddings and Brown then I will stand by Ohio..." -Sherman 10/29/59

Thanks. I'm sure you're right. Was in the area once w/o lot of time, so visited the historic Saratoga Race Course instead.

Then good for Lincoln making them feel betrayed.

My 3rd Great Grandfather, Captain Daniel E Turney, from Paris, KY won the Confederate Medal of Honor at the Battle of Lookout Mountain. Our family has is diary from the war and many have copies of it. It is truly remarkable the details he explains such as the conditions during the battle at Fort Donelson, where he was captured. He later was released from prison during a prisoner exchange.

After the war he came back to Paris and ran a very reputable hotel outside of town. He had all girls and two married into the Clay family in Lexington. His grand daughter, my great-grandmother, unveiled the Confederate soldier statue at Lexington Cemetery.

Anybody messing with someone over what their family did five generations ago ought to seriously get some perspective. I’ve got family that is five generations away from subsistence farming on the Steppes. Zero connection to that ish. Get over yourself. History is cool as hell and people’s stories should be preserved.
It would be nice if the mods would curtail the regular thread trolls. A thread about generations long passed being trolled by the typical known children should not be shut down the thread. Rather, the trolls should be shutdown.

My family came to this country well after the civil war, so I find the family histories intriguing.

Agreed man. We’ve butted heads before but nothing like their garbage. There really is nothing more pathetic than a super committed hardcore messageboard troll.
