Coaching hot seats

Coach Mark Stoops has moved off the hot seat list. But some of the names on the list include:Derek Mason, Butch Jones, Bret Bielema, Charlie Strong, Norm Chow, Mike MacIntyre, Larry Fedora, Mike Leach, and Bob Stoops. I think we got the right coach at the right time with the right plan. Have to believe that some of the players looking at those schools may start to waiver. And I think we will take a few 25 or maybe more. I know we can only sign 25, but we have gotten around that a few times before. I can't believe coach neck brace is not on the hot seat yet.

Can't believe Jones or Bielema are on the hot seat. Both have improved their programs.

I can't believe Butch Jones is on the hot seat anymore than I thought Mark Stoops was on it previously.

Read the UT boards after the OU loss. They are not happy, and some media folks (Bill King) are fanning the flames...

Mark Stoops was on the hot seat according to who?
Some guy on a blog. He's entitled to his opinion, but chances are, he's not getting paid (unless it's based on a number of clicks to the webpage) anymore than any us are. I am not too concerned with some blogger's opinion.

There's a one Stoops minimum on the hot seat at all times. Historically, it's normally Mike.

Maybe but his D totally stifled UT over the last 3 quarters and 2 OTs. Think they had something like less than 200 yds of O. Think Mike and Mark will have convos between now and Halloween?

That list is nonsense, but every squirrel finds a nut. They are right about Leach. Another year or 2 down the road, they might have a point about Strong. But not yet. I think Bielema will make it at Arky, this year is his low point.

Stoops was on a SDS hot list watch prior to the start of the season. We all knew he wasn't, but he was on their stupid list.

You are right, but this needs some context. The guy in really big trouble down there is Mike Hamilton. Hamilton couldn't hire a monkey in a zoo. He hired Derek Dooley and Donnie Tyndall. Both were huge disasters. Lane Kiffin and Cuonzo Martin got out of Knoxville as fast as possible. With Jones and Barnes, Hamilton will have to go down with the ship. Jones has recruited well, and will have some slack. There may be a mushroom cloud on the Tennessee fan board this week, but they saw far worse under Dooley than losing to Oklahoma. This is the bed they must sleep in for a while.

And they think they can actually find somebody who will recruit better? LOL

Mike Hamilton has been long gone from UT.

Dave Hart hired Tyndall.

Sorry. My bad. But Hart will have to provide some cover for Jones. They can't afford to whack him and go right back into the market for another reach this fast. Someone would take their money, but it will be another bad hire.

Kiffin was a walking violation, and bragged about it.
I'm not sold on our DC. Might as well put him on my hot list.

I guess the main thing is that no coach can fairly be judged on 1 game. Urban Meyer lost to Virginia Tech last year. Then he won the national championship. Mark Stoops lost to WKU in his opener as a head coach. Now he is winning SEC road games. Butch Jones has recruited very well. Given Tennessee's recent history with Kiffin and Dooley, I think they have to hang in there and sink or swim with Jones for a couple more years. If they don't have the stomach for that, then I think they will sink deeper into the quicksand that swallows up schools with dumb management.

Wanna bet on that?
Ya I'll bet on that. Like I said it's my hot seat list. I didn't say he's gonna be fired which he isn't cause him and. Mark are pals but he hasn't impressed me much in his coaching.

Like i stated before I'm not sold on him and hasn't impressed me any at all. Just like our 3/4 D has not impressed me any. If we run into a team with a good QB they will eat our lunch as we get no push up front to disrupt the QB. He has all day to find his targets.
I give a lot of credit to Stoops for personally coaching up the db's as they are much improved.

Butch Jones isn't currently on hot seat. I live in Tn. Rational UT fans know they're improving and winning the recruiting battles. They're much better but a year away.

Regardless of what happens the rest of this year there should be no way Mark Stoops should be on the hot seat. I've said all along that UK should be patient enough to expect (1 net win increase every 2 years. Feel free to blast away.). That would mean 6 wins this year AND 2016, then 7 wins for 2017 & '18. My reason is we play in the SEC and will have 6-10 teams in top 25 most every week. Ky isn't a recruiting hotbed. I believe it will take a coach like Stoops who can recruit outside the south and a patient administration and fanbase. (I get that fans will never be patient.) I can live with a 5 year window of slow but gradual improvement. I fully believe this staff can get us to 8-9 wins a year, with an occasional chance to win the SEC east. In the new format, if you make SEC championship game then good things can happen. It's not going to happen without a commitment to bldg a long term program. The other option is to change coaches every 3-4 years with system changes all the mess that comes with it. I think I would walk away from being a UK football fan if the administration didn't 110% support Stoops publicly and privately. (All my statements are obviously based on Stoops not having to stand at a press conference with a neck brace because of some stupid decisions ;-)

Saw a fun fact today... after 27 games Butch Jones and Derek Dooley have identical records.

Jones had recruited well but that's really just returning to what's normal for UT. Anyone should be able to recruit at UT. What Mayers is winning. They've improved, but their loss Saturday was extremely disheartening for a lot of their fans.

This past week it was SC's running game that was going to destroy us, now later a team with a great QB will eat our lunch. All of this could happen but right now if we get everyone back with the experience of these past couple of games I think we will do well.

Butch is not on any hot seat. We went from not being competitive (OU last year) to shatting the bed a 17pt lead, 14 in the 4th this year. We are getting better but at the end of the day it's still a loss. We had two many mistakes made by coaches and players down the stretch. We just choked. Make one field goal and the game is over. We effed up.

Keep in mind , it's not UK fans saying this . It's some blogger that appears to know very little about college football .

Powell - I'm not a big UT fan, but I've grown to respect Jones. Someone above posted that his record is the exact same as Dooley's. Jones inherited a much bigger mess. Dooley was your Billy G. I think we give UT a game this year that goes down to the wire in the 4 qtr.

I think Jones gets UT back to where you used to be. I also think UK has a chance to replace USCjr as the team no one wants to play in the SEC.

I'd be happy if SEC east was on the line when UK and UT match up each year. Spurrier is finished and I think Richt steps down sooner than people expect. (It will be interesting to see who Ga brings in when Richt eventually steps away. The state is loaded with talent. One bad hire could be huge for UT and UK.

Granted...we just won our first road SEC game since Lincoln was in Ofc ;-)

Absent some ridiculous collapse, like a 3-9 record, or some scandal, Butch Jones is good to go next year, so he's nowhere the hot seat. However, if Tennessee doesn't at least exceed last year's overall performance from last year, there will at least be a fair amount of speculation that 2016 is a make or break year. Considering his stellar recruiting classes, he should get the benefit of the doubt; especially considering where Dooley had left the program before he got there.

So who are really on hot seats...?

Mark Stoops was never on the "hot seat," not for a second. Definetly not Butch either. He has the Vols trending back towards contention. I would say Mike Leach, maybe Kirk Ferentz, Mike London are all feeling the heat...

I've heard some talk about Charlie Strong...that would be a shame. I think he is a good coach and I hope he gets a few years to right the ship down there.

Better hope Ferentz isn't on the hot seat because that's one job Stoops might leave us for.

Your funny.. Because they need to impress you... If you can't see the improvement over three years and the athletes we have on Defense now vs three years ago. Then you don't know jack about football... PERIOD>

Failed. Not sure if you are a troll or what but if you think for one second he would leave Kentucky for Iowa you are INSANE> Now if you said Miami or Florida State or Michigan then yeah I might think that could be a possibility however he will be able to name his price if he has a hugely successful year of 8 wins. So it won't be an easy call if it was one of the programs I just mentioned. Iowa no freaking way.

Everybody on here is always accusing everyone else of being a troll, just sayin'. Its all opinions so everyone should calm down and be positive.

I have a friend at Iowa, an alum and season ticket holder. (I am NOT claiming he has any inside knowledge or anything like that.) I asked him about Stoops once, and he told me that the fans do think about that and wish for it after Ferentz...but they do not think the administration has any interest at all in attempting to raise the profile of the program or put anything much into facilities or anything like that. Basically that they won't do anything to attract a high level coach.

But it is his alma mater and I guess that means more to some guys than it does to others.

Who's "hot seat list" is this? Just one you made up yourself or what? Because some of the names you mentioned are not even close to being on the hot seat.

I'd say Norm Chow is a pretty legit hot seat contender, but nobody really pays attention to Hawaii football anyway.

Eliot is running Stoops' defense so getting another DC isn't going to change much. Stoops would just bring in another guy to run his defense. The problem isn't scheme or coaching it's just a matter of having so much youth and having not built our depth across every position yet. It's coming though just wait for it. Ansley, Buh, Eliot, and Stoops have all coached at a very high level before coming here they know what it takes to build a top 10 defense

I would like to know this also. I could save some time ignoring those people/columns due to hot air being blown. Mark Stoops should have NEVER been on a hot seat. If anything, he is changing this programs.. I SAID THIS BEFORE THE SEASON as everyone else with half a mind did. SMH

You do realize Iowa is Stoops alma mater, right. All of them actually so there's a long family history there. I said he MIGHT leave us for them. If you don't think he'd at least consider it, well, I don't know what to tell you. As for the troll comment, whatever. Now as Appaws said, Iowa may have no interest in raising the profile of the program. If that's the case, no worries at all.

Yea, I didn't realize Stoops' seat was hot either. Sure we were all disappointed by losing the last 6 a year ago, but 5 wins was still a good step forward. This year we look to have a good shot at taking another step or 2. In fact I'd guess if UK goes on to win 6-8 games this year the only thing that would be suggested hot about his seat is whether someone might want to hire him out of it.
