Coach k

He seems to be in pretty good shape physically (except for the back issue) especially for someone his age.If Duke keeps things together over the next 4 or 5 weeks he will probably be back.If they drop 3 or 4 games maybe not(not kidding)
Hair dye is amazing stuff isn't it?

Managed to get a screen grab of K's MRI off the Dook medical website before they took it down.

Guys, there is nothing like back pain. Glad he is gone but hate the back pain bit. Hope Duke goes down the crapper and takes Allen down with the dirty water.
I agree, I've begun having severe back pain myself, and I know the reason but I'm holding off on any surgery until I can't go any longer, and maybe not even then. I've heard, and seen, too many horror stories of people who have had back surgery and came out even worse.

That said, I have no doubt he's hurting, else no reputable doctor would operate on him, but again, he COULD wait until the end of the season and have it done, so IMHO it shows, once again, that he is jumping ship on his players.

As others have said, if they were undefeated and looking unbeatable; if Allen wasn't pulling his crap, and the freshmen 5 stars were playing up to their billing, there is NO WAY he would jump the ship now; he would wait until the season is over.

K is all about K, screw him.

I just don't get why he couldn't do this before the season. It makes you wonder.
Or wait until the season is over. There are procedures that he can go through to ease whatever is ailing him. He could wear a brace while coaching too.
But he seemed to be moving around just fine, he springs right up out of his chair when he doesn't like a call.
I get it, back pain can cripple you, but he didn't appear to be in serious enough pain to need to take 4 weeks in the middle of the season.
Odd to say the least.

Exactly. You don't do all the things he does and all of sudden in the middle of turmoil get up and take a sabbatical

Was the NIT Year also the year cal had to have surgery? If so there is an example of our coach dealing with a poor team with a health problem of his own. I do not like K haven't for a long time.

After the 14 season.

The most insightful comment in this thread to this point is the small "k" in the title.

I have no problem with him getting the surgery to relieve his pain but if you think the timing is anything but part of a bigger agenda then you don't know coach k. He can come back later and garner sympathy from the media and even more favorable calls from the stripes (if that's possible).

Will also be an excuse to explain their favorable seeding and gold-plated path to the final four.

I suspect that as the tourney approaches there will be little hints put out there that this might be his last year and therefore the plan for him to get ONE more title will be in place with the committee and the zebras. I'd bet money on this.

Coach k ALWAYS has an agenda with everything he does. This surgery is no different.

Exactly. Been saying for a while now, he's this generation's Wooden. All manner of excuses for cheating and an unmatched hypocrisy from the media about it all.

Did he try a spinal block to get him through the season or ran straight to surgery to get away from the issues of his current team? I have had 3 surgeries on my spine and had to miss work because of the physical nature of my job. If all I had to do was sit on the bench or walk around a little, I think I could have held oft a few months before having surgery. He clearly is being affected mentally as well as physically.

I almost guarantee he is giving Capel a tryout for the job right now and if he performs well, K will retire soon knowing Capel won't tarnish the Duke name. If he waits until he physically can't coach anymore and dumps the job on Capel and he can't handle it, all that K built will come tumbling down. If Capel can't succeed with a team full of McDonald's All-Americans, how will he do when the pickins get slim?

When you have bad disk in your back one minute you are fine and the next instant you can hardly walk. Coach K is a fraud.
Seems like he uses this to his advantage?

Fair-weather fans, fair weather coach. He had all summer to have back surgery if he needed it. Guarantee he's getting hit from all directions - Bolden's mom, Giles' handlers, Trippy boy problems, etc. He's about done. Love it!
From someone who's had a fusion at 3 levels and a permanent spinal cord stimulator implanted, his back issues are not fix over the Summer types.
Now, enough defending him, even if in pain, there are heat and ice wraps, tens units, steroid injections, pain meds. The situation in terms of chronic back trouble isn't comical. His lay on the floor and suck his thumb attitude is. There is no reason he can't stand(if advisted by his surgeon) or sit(again, same thing), and coach.
His antics are pathetic and he's an ass of a man. What physical hardship does a basketball coach with multiple assistants endure that require a leave of absence. An unannounced surgery or stimulator trial are the only excuses to validate time off.

Rumor has it he rolls his own tampons. The timing of this announcement is so obvious. No ill will against him for having back surgery, but I promise you he had this scheduled in mid to late April.

I know all about disc issues. I've had a discectomy done twice. I also have had injections and physical therapy before finally having 2 fusions done. One was in my neck (c5 thru c7) and the other is in my lower back (l5 to s1 I believe it was). Injections helped the disc pain immensely when i was just sitting around relaxing, but doing a lot of physical work and the pain came back. I'd imagine he could sit around taking it easy and have his assistants do most of the hard work if he wanted. He also could have just retired when he started having all these issues and enjoyed his later years with his wife, kids, and grandkids. Instead he wants to just keep padding his stats.

Kornheiser says Allen needs to come back sooner than later. What a clown. Even Wilbon disagreed.

Both of them agreed that the current 4-6 week estimate that K will be out seems a bit wishful.

Krycholsky will use his return to get them seeded in an even easier bracket than their normal cakewalk. He'll be floating rumors of his retirement for the next few months and looking like a basset hound with the saddest face in history as he does his usual fake schtick.

Looks like Gaudet got tagged for the 5-14 part of the season and K got the 8-4 preseason. I'd bet this ends up the same story. If they fall apart, the recovery will take longer and they'll hit Capel with the regular season and postseason record which won't be good while K gets the 12-2 (so far) and only a single road game (which was a loss). They lost to the good teams they played and struggled with several of their home cupcakes.
