CI Wrestling Thread #56

I appreciate Cena and think he deserves 17 but I would tread lightly on how to go about it. Putting it on him at Mania seems a little too fairytale when you could use that to really build some storylines. I could see him getting a short mid summer run and then dropping it back at Summerslam but I think it'd take away the "magic" of Wrestlemania.

I just realized that Brock Lesnar's daughter was the 2024 NCAA Champion in shotput.

Never trust a leaked wrestling "script" for something major that's still weeks away. Best guess is right now creative probably has a good idea of who the final four guys are but an entire countdown this early isn't worth anyone's time. Plus I think Cena might win at EC and why would Rock be anywhere near the Rumble match? He's The Final Boss. If he wants Cody for the title...he can just come out and say it's happening.

I agree about Cena and EC they’ve been advertising heavily he will be there.

I had to search for AEW on Wednesday on Max but since I watched Dynamite on there the shows come up for me.

There was a number (I'm sure is fake) saying 1.3 million people watched at least some of Dynamite when you factor in max. The cable number was about 600,000.

WWE has signed a deal with Hulk Hogan's "Real American Beer." I think he's supposed to be on tonight.

Wrestle Dynasty sounded like a pretty good show. Of course tonight is the big one, first Raw on Netflix.

CM Punk vs. Seth Rollins.
Roman Reigns vs. Solo Sikoa - Tribal Combat.
WWE World Women's Champion Liv Morgan vs. Rhea Ripley - Last Woman Standing Match.
Drew McIntyre vs. Jey Uso.
The Rock returns.
John Cena returns.
Michael Cole and Pat McAfee return.

Heard tons of empty seats for wrestle kingdom - losing top stars over the years caught up to them.

I saw the raw ring there’s maybe 6 sponsors on it.

I don't care if she was Vince McMahon's paralegal. There ain't nothing makes that little rip worth keeping on the books. Not sure I have hated a lady rassler more than her.

Looks like there will be commercials if you are watching Raw in the United States. Overseas there won't be any.
I've seen rumors the show might be 3.5 hours tonight. I guess on Netflix they can go however long they want.

- Thurston (Wrestlenomics) is hearing Smackdown will go back to a 2 hr format around June.

- Becky Lynch is expected back tonight.

- I know Austin has the stance of not doing one-offs unless there's a plan in place for him but it sucks he's just rarely around now. We could've gotten him stunning Rock at Mania but got Taker instead, which really didn't fit. Would be nice to have them there tonight. Guy is turning into Cornette, ie not wanting to leave the state he's currently living in.

- There's a Meltzer quote where he jokingly called Omega the "God of everything" (whatever that means) and said he should be AEW champion. I might agree with the second part. Darby ain't the soul of that place, it's Omega. All I know is find someone who loves you like Meltzer loves Omega and Ospreay. I fawned over Rock and Austin...when I was 14.

Decent Raw so far but nothing like a WM card.

They'll slowplay the Rock stuff but who knows if he or creative has confirmation he'll be available. Cena set aside a year for WWE. Rock is never going to do that. Rock on NXT tomorrow night is insane though (Eddie Thorpe shoved Ava down last week I think).

Can't wait to see the numbers this is getting as I think Ripley made a couple million more fans instantly. Even if she's not your type you can still see her as an action star.

I’m still legit curious what they are doing with Drew. He’s around the main event, but having him lose to Jey Uso on the Netflix Raw debut just made him look bad. No idea where they go with him moving forward, or if he will be in teh WM picture at all. Feels like he will be (or they wouldn’t use him on the Netflix debut) but it also feels like they are just keeping him floating around the top by continually fighting an Uso or Sami. I don’t know, but the guy deserves a run with some gold after the work he did last year.

Where did The Final Boss Rock go? He’s back to yucking it up with Cody, seems like. The most interesting version of Rock in two decades is gone, looks like.

NJPW commentator Chris Charlton is now on an “indefinite hiatus” after controversial remarks at Wrestle Dynasty. During the event, Charlton called Tony Khan a “money mark” during Kenny Omega and Gabe Kidd’s co-main event, seemingly to fuel an AEW vs. NJPW storyline. He also questioned, “What have Kazuchika Okada, Jay White, and Will Ospreay done since signing with AEW?” and compared the Continental Classic unfavorably to NJPW’s G1 tournament.

Following these comments, Dave Meltzer reported Charlton’s absence from New Year’s Dash commentary. Charlton shared a picture with Omega after the event but later deleted a tweet where he attempted to explain his remarks. As of now, Charlton has not issued any public statements regarding the situation.

Yep, that did not make any sense. Also why did he comment favorably on Roman before his match with Solo?

The Rock has done more heel/baby flips this past year than the Big Show has in 30 years.

Rhea is straight up sex.

I dont know what the deal with Drew is. He's great but they keep having him lose. Granted Jey too is white hot. I think you could have Drew go on a rough patch for a while before eventually snapping and turning back into the Scottish psychopath. He deserves gold.

I get that the fans love Jey’s entrance and that he sells shirts, but damn he’s boring in the ring. Maybe Crittenden is correct and they are resetting storylines, but even if that’s the case I have no idea where they are going with Drew and see no path to either title. It’s a shame as the guy has the looks and in-ring prowess to be a bad-ass heel champ, or even a tweener as I don’t think the crowd has fully turned on him. Who knows.

Isn’t that what they basically did with drew over the last 12 months when punk kept interfering in his matches?

I do hope he ends up with the belt he’s definitely earned it - even though he’s lost his last 2 feuds he’s done more of his share of the legwork to carry the feuds.

I agree about Jey. He's insanely popular but doesn't really wow anyone in the ring. I wonder if they are just riding that wave until Jimmy gets fully healthy and they can go back to tagging full time. You nailed it on Drew. I don't think the crowd will ever turn on him. He's done everything to try and get them to (calling them idiots, liars, turncoats, etc) but they still keep cheering. I think he'll be a badass tweener champ before 2025 is up and eventually keep the same attitude but full on face.

I agree Rhea is awesome - I just hope we don’t get Rhea/liv for the 9th match in a row in the future.

Maybe bring Guilia or Stephanie up to feud with her?

If it's Guilia, can we go back to the 90's and have some sort of scantily clad smut stipulation for their match?
