CI Wrestling Thread #56

If 550 million people attended AEW events in 2024, then 2 billion attended WWE events. I'm not sure how that math works when there were several weeks in which AEW might've had a total of 7,500 fans between shows.

I think the Meltzer Awards are in a few weeks so I'm prepared for Ospreaymania with him retiring with 158 Observer Awards and 91 five star matches but I'm in the camp who believes if he has so many "5 star and beyond" classics, his matches will just blend together and very few are going to stand out, esp. if they aren't built around good, long term storylines. Meltzer giving him several five stars per year and fans claiming he's the best ever and it's not close actually hurts the aura of Ospreay in my view. Same has already happened with MJF. He was really talked up for two years and now? Not really much of a peep.

It's more on Meltzer than anything. Ospreay is incredible but with Danielson basically retired, that's going to be an internet love affair for the next 20 years, moreso WWE's love affair with Cena as the "greatest ever" which is laughable too. I'm sure it's just my age and the fact that technical wrestling has been replaced by video game style but I'd take Bret, Owen, Eddie, and Angle over Ospreay, Danielson, and Fletcher. <---- And those three are very, very good.

I remember seeing in an interview he likes going by "Cope" but that needs to end.

For anyone like me who watched New Japan on AXS TV that deal ended on 12/31 so won't be airing there anymore.

Good about last night
-Jay White looking legit finally
-MJF finally cut a decent promo
-Hurt syndicate looks strong

Not good
-JJ shouldn’t be in the world title picture in 2025
-Looks like Cope is using his creative control to get him a potential edge/christian/mox match down the road
-Hurt syndicate should be chasing belts asap
-Learning tree looked like a joke / big bill deserves better
-Where’s wardlow

Sapp mentioned in a recent stream that he doesn't see Miro showing up in AEW again. He's still under contract of course. My guess? He saw Tony as a mega mark pushover and quickly figured out he could walk all over him and wouldn't be released. He sounds like a headache but an owner cannot allow one of his employees to run him over, metaphorically of course.

I think you build up the HS like Evolution. Give them all the titles in 2025 and make them uber cool. They're not "taking over", they're just talented, older, and have more experience. Have them come out and say you saw us winning titles elsewhere. Did you not think that wouldn't happen here too? AEW needs a few doses of "cool" this year. Unfortunately, I've seen a lot of their fans say they're nerds themselves and AEW should embrace nerdom.

I think Miro’s problem is he refuses to put anyone over so TK pays him to sit home.

I think HS has been getting reactions so giving them belts might do more good than harm. It’s better than when Mox wins and the crowd is silent.

I don't know how he acted in WWE but as a veteran, it seems off to land elsewhere and refuse to lose. I wonder if it's like the Starks situation where he rejected one idea which he felt would hurt ole Big Bill and it got construed as repeatedly refusing creative. Guess there's always TNA since he can't make it work elsewhere.

I say begin giving the HS gold in the spring. If Darby is next, let Lashley destroy him before he rides off to Everest. Maybe he returns a few months later to a hero's welcome and does the impossible - beats an unstoppable Lashley. I dunno. That also sounds like I'm turning Lashley into Lesnar which AEW fans would likely despise lol.

WWE currently has no live shows scheduled until the middle of March in order to give talent a break

It was noted that several stars were said to be extremely happy with the situation and the emphasis by Triple H on spending time with family and ensuring a more balanced schedule, especially during the holidays

Another clear sign that times have truly changed for the better in WWE. You love to see it!

One thing I noticed about Jarrett’s promo is he referred to it as the Tennessee territory. I’ve always thought of it as Memphis - is he not allowed to call it “Memphis” anymore bc of that whole legal stipulation?

If you’re referring to the Larry Burton/USWA lawsuit, I doubt it. Most just referred to the generic name Memphis anyways (we always called it channel 3 rasslin)

It’s strange does say the Tennessee territory when everyone I know calls it Memphis
