CI Wrestling Thread #56

Hope everyone had a very Merry Christmas. Thought Dynamite was another very good show.

If you aren't following the WWE Vault Channel on Youtube they've been putting up some classic ECW matches and programs this week. Saturday night they are airing the never before seen WWECW show 2006 from the old ECW Arena.
The lineup includes:

Rob Van Dam vs. Kurt Angle with Dean Malenko as the special referee.
Sabu vs. CW Anderson.
Big Show vs. Tommy Dreamer.
Paul Heyman addresses the fans.
CM Punk vs. Stevie Richards.
Balls Mahoney vs. Mike Knox.
The FBI vs. Danny Doring & Roadkill.
Sandman vs. Justin Credible.
Francine, Kelly Kelly and Trinity in an Extreme Bikini Contest.

NXT - 723,000
Dynamite - 574,000

This makes me happy because I remember what NXT used to be and what it turned into under Vince. And Triple H convincing his buddy to take a job he used to have to improve the once great developmental show. Michaels not only improved it but throughout the fall his show has embarrassed AEW. You'd think this would light a fire under AEW's ass but we know it won't.

In WWE, Ricochet was apparently mistreated creatively, given the Speed title which AEW fans mocked, and his abilities were held down.

In AEW, he's a little brother type dork, gets roasted on twitter, has a mic put in front of him (like Mone) which is his weakness (like Mone), and has gotten rolls of tp thrown at him multiple times. He's also developed a fake AHA laugh as a gimmick, much like Okada saying 'bitch.'

Making a talented guy look like a geek is Vince level booking but in AEW, it's seen as a positive. I get it - WWE good/bad, AEW good/bad. Rick was a hero here and a villain at Louisville. There's always spin but it's funny how you'll get bad McMahon booking in AEW yet those fans eat it up. Ricochet on Raw = bad. Ricochet getting pelted with toilet paper = good.

I guess if fans are responding, that's a positive I suppose but if Ricochet was being covered in toilet paper and doing a fake laugh gimmick in the E, AEW fans would be having online conniption fits over his misuse.

Oh, and the Toni Storm storyline is stupid. If you don't know, she returned as rocker Toni and is now considered a rookie. She believes she's never wrestled in AEW before. It's why she "debuted" on Rampage and is wrestling on preshows. Reminds me when I used to play WWE games and career mode would start you out on house shows and Sunday Night Heat. So it's creative but really dumb. The viewer, company (including Tony), announcers, and fans there have to now pretend this version of Toni Storm is a new wrestler who's never been in AEW. Would fans not say WTF if Vince had come up with this for, I dunno, Liv Morgan?

That's all I got tonight.

Ya the AEW fans are calling this “creative genius” and “character reinvention” instead of the obvious which is putting ice on what was a great feud with Mariah and Toni. Meanwhile Mariah has basically held the belt treading water and losing any heel heat she built up.

The fun of being of being able to post in places like this is we can agree to disagree. I think the Toni Storm thing is great and the fact the audience is going along with it makes it even better.

Thought last night's show was very good overall. The main event was ok but it did set up something for Wednesday night. The Continental Classic matches are definitely worth watching. In typical internet fashion the people complaining AEW shows go too long were griping about it ending at 11:30 pm.

Meltzer had some ready made answer for Dynamite but my question is how come no one is talking about Smackdown losing almost a million viewers since the summer. We'll see if it rebounds once we get to Rumble season but not sure if going to three hours will help. I'm a big fan of the two hour format.

So WWE decided to run a house show in the same place as AEW. It's like the good old days when the WWF would run in Philly the same time as the NWA. Most nights WWF would draw more people.

WWE had 8,000 people in an 18,000 seat arena. AEW did 7,000 and sold all the tickets they made available.
So you had over 15,000 people attending wrestling in Orlando which is how you should look at it. Of course logic and common sense are two things you'll never see in the IWC.

WWE is having Gunther vs. Punk in Chicago tonight...where's the story...LOL.

Well for one it’s Chicago so if they advertise a world title match with punk it might sell more tickets but also they could be testing out to see how a possible punk/gunther match might work.

Infamously hogan and flair had house show matches and Vince didn’t like how the crowd reacted so he scrapped the feud altogether.

Also I think a Jake Roberts/hogan feud was scrapped bc Jake got too much reaction at house shows compared to hogan.

Hard to believe but tonight is the last Raw on the USA Network.

WWE Tag Team Champions The War Raiders & Damian Priest face The Judgment Day.
CM Punk and Seth Rollins to appear ahead of their match on the Netflix Raw premiere.
WWE Women's Intercontinental Championship Tournament Semi-Final: Zoey Stark vs. Dakota Kai.
Otis vs. Chad Gable.
WWE Women's Intercontinental Championship Tournament Semi-Final: IYO SKY vs. Lyra Valkyria.
Pete Dunne vs. R-Truth.

AEW Worlds End had ONLY 2 hrs and 12 mins of wrestling.

The 4-Way main event was only 15m 39s.

For 2024, this was the LEAST amount of wrestling on an AEW PPV and this was the SHORTEST main event in AEW PPV history!

Worst PPV main event as well. I'd have expected that on AEW or WWE weekly shows, but not an AEW PPV.

Becky Lynch lost a match several months ago and left. She's returning next week. Will her return be on WWE Main Event or on Netflix because she's one of WWE's stars? Toni Storm is a star and for a storyline, AEW is pretending she's not when the company is in need of starpower. It's interesting creative but booking malpractice, esp. when ratings aren't good.

The Ricochet stuff may work but he's a good looking, super athletic guy with a beautiful wife. He ain't close to the Rock in personality but he should be portrayed as Rock from the Nation. Maybe that'll happen in the HS with Lashley. Right now though, he's treated like a bullied nerd in middle school. Does the world want to see Joe Burrow geeked out or arriving to a stadium as a playboy, looking like a star, and throwing bombs on the field? AEW has enough geeks and nerds in the locker room. Why is Ricochet another one?

It's all fan preference but in a time when NXT is winning and holiday house shows are beating PPV's, something ain't hitting right with the national audience.

Also not to mention they’re champs are uninteresting right now…
Mox - just won at worlds end and crowd was dead
Okada - most interesting of the group bc of his ability but he’s mostly been doing comedy
Private party - not even sure what they add / just got belts so bucks can go to Japan for a bit
Trios - not even sure who has them?
Mariah - had a great feud with Toni but with this amnesia thing it’s on ice now
Mone - bad on mic / nothing interesting since she wont put anyone over

Got ahead of myself with Becky. I keep assuming everyone is returning next week. Raw will be epic but it won't be 4 hrs. She probably returns at the Rumble.

- Moxley is a 4x champ. That's a lot for a company just five years old. He's their Cena without the high merch sales and he thinks it's good business to hide the AEW title.
- Comedy Okada is lame but I'll give him slack. It was his fans who assumed if he went to WWE, he'd be booked against top guys immediately. Now that we know he'd rather cruise but still put on solid matches at 70%, those same fans are a bit more realistic so I think they're just happy to see him on American tv now.
- Mone is good in-ring but needs the WWE machine behind her, similar to Cody. In AEW, he was fine. Two years back in WWE and he looked and sounded like a living legend with the world behind him.

One thing I forgot to mention from the promo- Rollins said AEW was "competition."

Can't remember if this was posted or not but best matches of the year according to SI.
