CI Wrestling Thread #56

Let's take a look at some shitty Raw undercard matches then WWF had during the attitude era
12/14/1999
JEricho vs. Prince Albert
Angle vs. Test
X-Pac vs. Tori - yes Tori, a woman

11/29/1999
Big Boss Man & Viscera vs. Kane & Big Show - yeah they had Kane and Big Show lose this lol
Steve Blackman vs. The Godfather
Grandmaster Sexay & Scotty 2 Hotty vs. Crash Holly & HArdcore Holly

11/15/1999 - this entire episode had ~29 minutes of wrestling. You coud argue the whole entire card was shit

11/1/1999
Chyna vs. Stevie Richards
The Rock vs. Road Dogg
Austin vs. Billy Gunn
Test vs. Val Venis
Triple H vs. Shane McMahon was the main event lol
Big names there in Gunn and Road Dogg but both have always been mediocre singles competitors at best

10/25/1999
Viscera vs. Godfather
Big Show vs. Prince Albert
Chyna & D-Lo vs. Jericho and Stevie Richards
Then they had Test and British Bulldog in a steel cage battle to a draw

10/11/1999
Billy Gunn vs. Crash Holly
The Godfather vs. Mark Henry in a "Ho Jack" match
Jim Ross (lol) and Austin vs. Chyna and Triple H

9/28/1999
D-Lo vs. Steve Blackman
Chyna & Debra vs. Jeff Jarrett & Tom Pritchard

9/20/1999
Jericho vs. Billy Gunn
Stephanie McMahon & Test vs. Debra and Jeff Jarrett
Shawn Stasiak vs. Steve Blackman
HArdcore Holly vs. Big Boss Man
Main event of Shane McMahon and Test vs. China and Triple H

9/13/1999
Ivory vs. Jeff Jarrett
Test vs. Joey Abs
Godfather vs. Chaz
JEricho vs. Gotch Gracie

9/6/1999
Jeff Jarrett vs. Vacqueline
Gerald Briscoe, Pat Patterson, and Test vs. Joey Abs, Pete Gas, and Rodney
D-Lo vs. Steve Blackman
Main event of Triple H vs. Billy Gunn

Mid/lower card of the attitude era was awful until late 99/early 00 when they brought in the radicalz and Jericho.

And then they had Jericho beating jobbers and losing to low end talent like D-Lo Brown, Road Dogg, Billy Gunn, Stevie Richards, Godfather, Gangrel,

This isn't even true. You can go back and watch an Attitude Era show on peacock lmao....in fact just last week I was watching the debut of Scott Hall in WCW and they had multiple shitty matches.

The attitude era was notorious for having a shitty undercard and mid card because they struggled to book anything that wasn't NWO, Rock, Austin, Undertaker, or HHH related.
i didnt see scott hall's debute in WCW. I can't remember when I started watching. I think it was early 1998 or late 97.

All these shows are infinitely better than what AEW shits out every week. Jericho was over. Billy Gunn was over. The Godfather was over. Pull the ratings for those shows.

Here's a better link to show how awesome the shows were back then instead of the trash AEW puts out weekly

Don’t forget how over Val venis was too

Revisionist history doesn’t make those cards look great but those shows were fun and lots of interviews/skits inbetween - definitely wasn’t boring and prob pulling 3.5-4.5 million viewers

No disrespect to Moxley but wrestlers lie and they always chase the pop and the money.
Normally I’d agree but he’s different. He’s not a slave to money like most are. That promo he did last year about still driving a beat up truck was legit. Not to mention he absolutely hated working there. Besides that, tk will keep giving him whatever money he wants anyway.

wwe during the attitude area worked the same 30 or so guys over and over again and everyone was over. they had a few guys that you didn't really care about too but most of their roster was over and interacting with one another. that's not what's going on here. it's no name jobbers that no one cares about. i want to see rhodes vs punk or miro vs black or some of the bigger names start getting involved with one another. it seems like the record(s) are keeping this from happening.. because everyone is undefeated. BD was undefeated up until this most recent loss to Hangman, which was dumb.

where's jay lethal? where Christian? why arent they involved. who gives a shit about orange cassidy, hook, and all these other scabs that make me tune out of their show. my guess is they really don't know what to do and today's wrestling really does need writers to create storylines to keep people interested. outside of cm punk, this product isn't worth watching. I'm thankful he's usually on in the first 20 minutes because I can tune out after that.

WCW would save him until the end and tease him for 3 hours when nitro was around but AEW has no idea how to run a show
So much wrong with this I don’t know where to start.

First of all Cody is out. Miro is injured. Lethal and Christian were both on the show last night.

Running the same guys out there every week is exactly how you burnout your fans and make them bored. It’s exactly what wwe does now. AEW cycles their guys in and out. OC is one of the biggest draws and merch sellers in the company. But sure take him off tv. Hook is massively over and knocked off cm punk as the top merch seller after a single match. But yea, remove him too.

AEW is still very young, they’re building their own stars. They can’t just use their 10-15 top guys every week or they end up like wwe who can’t make new stars. That’s why they started grooming MJF/Darby/Sammy/Jungle Boy in year one. Now they’re all main event or upper mid card level. They’re doing the same thing now with Hook/Garcia/Martin/Wardlow.

If you can’t see what they’re doing then you’re pretty blind.

The NFL is unassailable. All other sports are down. Regular TV shows don’t draw near what they used to either.
Ok that makes sense but my point is if you have a good draw/brand you can still draw a big rating
NFL is as good as 20 years ago
I’m betting college football/basketball still draws well
NBA isn’t as good as 20 years ago (Jordan/Kobe/shaq)
Network tv isn’t near as good all the good series are on hbo/Netflix/Amazon etc

The entire wrestling product is overexposed. That's part of the reason WCW died, adding Thunder and three hours of Nitro was a disaster. It's happened with WWE stretching Raw to three hours. At times, it feels like WWE tries to get away with televising as little wrestling as possible these days.

And it is pretty embarrassing the company doesn't have enough women on the roster to fill the their Royal Rumble match.

I’m not sure how they’d carry 30 plus women. They take up like 1/4 of each show. Not enough screen time to keep any story lines going for more than 10 or so.

It makes me throw up in my mouth a little bit to say this but I agree with you about some of this stuff. I mean there are only so many times you can see a variation of Big E, Seth, KO and Lashley wrestle. It's one on one, fatal fourway, triple threat, etc, etc, etc. They try to build all that up to a PPV match you have already had on RAW within the past 2-3 weeks? It's like WWE doesn't know how to build a story anymore. They just let the guys who are feuding wrestle each other over and over with an occasional 3rd or 4th opponent thrown in as a tag opponent or in a multiple man match. It's gets so old and stale that by the PPV event nobody even cares. That Day 1 event was so horrible that I was able to watch it in about 15 minutes because I skipped so much of it.

Observer Hall of Fame inductees for 2021

Okada
Los Brazos (Mexican tag team)
Don Owen
Jim Crockett Jr

the big surprise mentioned previously was Mistico. But the threshold was 60% and Mistico only got 59.7% of the vote and he decided not to round up

I legitimately hate WWE’s booking and product. It’s shit and horrible booking. It’s not good. Roman Reigns is like Lebron James. Thinks he’s as good to be put in the same conversation as the rock, Austin, taker, HBK, etc. Vince just can’t make stars anymore. Which hell, I honestly don’t think he did and the wrestlers had more control over their own gimmicks back then.

Just because a wrestler is over doesn't make him/her a good wrestler. See Warrior, Santino Marella, etc.

These days? I just pointed out an entire RAW card from 1999 that had just around 29 minutes of wrestling on a 2-hour show. Sadly, that isn't even remotely the worst they ever did in the 2-hour of RAW during and shortly after the Monday Night Wars

A sample of some Raw or Smackdown combined wrestling times in 2002 (dark matches excluded)
4/1/2002 - 25 minutes; 3/26/2002 - 28 minutes; 3/25/2002 - 24 minutes

2001:
11/6/2001 - 26 minutes ; 10/1/2001 - 29 minutes; 9/23/2001 - 27 minutes

2000:
10/31/2000 - 27 minutes; 10/30/2000 - 25 minutes; 10/23/2000 - 26 minutes

1999:
11/16/1999 - 27 minutes; 11/15/1999 - 29 minutes; 10/19/1999 - 32 minutes

1998:
12/1/1998 - 32 minutes; 11/30/1998 - 27 minutes

In 1996 and 1997 it looks like they were taping multiple nights for each RAW episode so not sure which matches aired on which RAW

It's always been like this with WWE since RAW launched. Wrestling hasn't been their product for decades now. The biggest product they put out on their weekly show is commercials.

Meanwhile AEW Dynamite routinely nearly reaches or eclipses 60 minutes every week. Hell they've had at least two weeks in very recent memory where they've had just one match exceed the combined amount of wrestling WWE was putting out for their entire Raw show. Hell on 12/15/2001 alone they had 86 minutes, EIGHTY SIX.

AEW is where you go if you want to watch wrestling. WWE is where you go if you want to watch commercials, soap operas, and childish nonsense.

amazing how angry some people get for him calling out Saudi Arabia.
Might not have been the most tasteful of jokes, but it definitely drove the point home.

The part I personally found hilarious were the Anti-semitic organizations posting in response to Meltzer offering to "educate" Meltzer--a Jew who had family that died in the Holocaust. Yep, definitely needs educated by all those professional offense-takers.

Plenty of recaps from last week's show or the recent PPV.

They have never had that many women on roster. Right now they have only 11 women entered into the Royal Rumble from the current roster. I guess the other 19 entrants will be former wrestlers from the past.

I know this. But an earlier poster said it was pathetic that WWE doesn’t have enough women on the roster to fill the rumble. I was pointing out that it would make no sense to do so.
