CI Wrestling Thread #56

calling the WON/F4w board a group of insiders is a joke. Theres Dave Meltzer, Bryan Alvarez, and maybe 2 other people that are 'insiders" and none of them are saying Brock is going to AEW
Yes, I had read that Meltzer had shot that down last night, said there had been no talks between AEW and Lesnar. And we know Meltzer is well-connected in AEW.

I'm pretty sure the rumors emanated from WWE, where they are seeing things on their end in communications (or lack thereof) with Bryan and Punk leading them to conclude they are signing/signed to AEW.

They should have realized it's just impossible to keep secrets that big under wraps for any length of time. Black was an anomaly that was played to perfection, but if they were trying to surprise the audience with their debut, they would need to debut them immediately after signing.

Dynamite ratings for last night. 1,108 million viewers and a .45 in the 18-49 demo.

I believe the total viewers was down slightly from last week but the demo was up.

Think the quarter hours will be out later tonight or tomorrow. Very curious what the Gage/Jericho segment did.

I’m curious now what the Rampage show will do with all the hype and buzz about Punk coming back. Also will he be coming back as Punk? Does he own that name? Will AEW want him back with that name?

  • Bad publicity is sometimes better than no publicity.
  • We've been talking about which wrestlers what might move the needle and cause an uptick in viewership. This was a publicity stunt. I don't like it, but it was what it was.
  • Dominos advertises on AEW for the same reason we talk about the 18-49 demo after every episode, they want to reach people who eat pizza. Dominos is playing hurt and virtue signalling on social media, but I seriously doubt they will take their advertising dollars elsewhere.

I don't think the match was really *that violent*, I just thought the whole thing was trashy and low rent. Jericho looked like a bloated Brandon Lee from The Crow and Gage came to the ring with an entrance video showing him in fields and backyards and shit. I would rather watch an old school cage match than some meth addict with missing teeth walking around the ring showing off a pizza cutter like a sadistic Dominos employee from the trailer park.

It won't hurt AEW though. I mean, I may complain but I did watch it.

TK experimented to see how far is too far. Archer vs Mox... was a masterpiece and I don't think you'll hear a lot of people complain and say it went too far. Was a great match and great story in the ring. Nick F'n Gage... yeah probably too far. But you know what, they still pumped out 1.1mil and still top in the demo. Will we see it again? On dynamite, probably not. They may do that once a year on Rampage with the 10-11 slot on friday night. It wasn't as bad as some of ya'll are making it out to be. Nick gage just doesn't fit the mold and he's not someone I would want headlining my shows to millions. I'm sure TK was on a call with Warner execs and Domino execs today. They said don't do it again and like the cool kid in the class he just said yes, won't happen again and laughed while walking away.

I mean personally, I think State Farm insurance would've been a better ad slot for that match. They are the official sponsors of AEW after all.

I think Punk and Bryan are actually the anomaly. Atleast as far as AEW. Except for those two theyve been able to keep pretty much everything a secret. I’ve seen numerous reporters claim nobody there talks. Almost makes me wonder if AEW wanted the news out.

I just got around to watching AEW from last night and I could have been fine not seeing that Jericho match. I don't get the attraction to death matches.
Is there any doubt AEW would have New Jack on their program if he was still alive? I'm convinced Jericho wants to be the real life Randy the Ram.

That garbage match was the final straw of any chance I ever tried to give that jack leg no talent operation. I've been hard on it but tried to give it the benefit of the doubt that one day it could be decent. At the end of the day, AEW is exactly what it is. A bunch of no talent 175 pound wannabe wrestlers who know they can't hack it in the WWF, former WWF guys who didn't click with the product (rusev and ambrose), or a bunch of over the hill has beens.

Can't blame you. Mr. Cornette. Man, that AEW sure does suck!

I thought Dynamite was decent.

Didn’t like the outlaw mud show IWA style garbage main event. Pretty sure I saw that match in a barn at my local county fair when I was 17. Nick Gage doesn’t belong in a nationally televised main event.

Wasn’t thrilled about the finish of the 10-man tag. Hated the highly choreographed dive to the floor spot where both teams stopped fighting to get into position to catch the guys coming off the top.

Good to see Meng/Haku again. Still wouldn’t f with that guy

The cover and pin camera angle in the Julia Hart /Thunder Rosa match was something up Col. Angus’ ally. I thought we were gonna see lips.

Coincidentally, I have friends who think Cornette and his outdated wrestling ideas and over-the-top ranting schtick is the drizzle-sh!ts, but don't watch or care about AEW.

I must be one of the few people who follows both AEW and Cornette.

I’m the same. I listen to Cornette weekly and watch Dynamite every week.

I don’t believe everything Cornette says is gospel, but many of his criticisms of AEW are on point. They do some things really well. Other things come off as WWE ripoffs or straight up indy tomfoolery

We agree on all of this

I watch AEW. I like some of it, don't like some of it.

It's actually better for the product when people don't stay silent about things they dislike.

Nick Gage - nope.

Juvi? Hell yes.

Shit, let KO come in for one show only.

I used to listen to Cornette on youtube as well. He is an amazing storyteller, no doubt. But I have said it before, and I will say it again: I highly suspect WWE is paying him under the table to rip AEW. And yes, I know he also criticizes WWE, but you might want to listen to how he describes his rants back in the late 1990's on behalf of WWE. He basically says he criticized WWE in those rants too (but not too much) to seem like an "honest broker," beholden to no one--but of course he was on WWE's payroll and his overarching goal was to put down WCW/NWO/etc.

I'm pretty sure I made Travis's list (blocked) after I put forth that opinion previously. So to quote him, "lol."

I was worried AEW would have a hard time moving tickets for the United Center show but I guess I should have known better. Hoping they sell atleast 7k more to get in the 17k range. But 10k tix sold on just the pre sale within a couple hours is nice. Monday is the day they go on sale for the general public.

If what we think will happen is going to happen at the show in Chicago, they won't have any problem selling at or near capacity.
