CI Wrestling Thread #56

As always looking forward to Takeover tonight. Though at least for me there’s not as big of a buzz as usual.

The Most Wanted Treasures is Big Show and Mark Henry looking for Andre The Giant stuff. Otherwise known as “two guys who don’t work for WWE anymore.”

Apparently these were all shot back in 2019 and are just now airing.
Haha surprised wwe didn’t have them trash the episode

Apparently HHH was the one who got Joe hired back before he could go anywhere else. (Impact or AEW)

So Eva Marie returns tonight and is wrestling Naomi. Guessing the internet will revolt after she wins.

RKBro is the absolute best (and only good?) thing happening on Raw, and easily one of the top two things in WWE right now. I hope this isn't screwed up as RKBro should be given a tag title run. The chemistry is absolutely perfect.

You mean you didn't enjoy the Jeff Hardy retirement match?

It's really hard to explain how bad Raw is at this moment.

They have written McIntyre into a no-win match, pretty much ruining him until Lashley loses the title (Lashley is still AWFUL on the mic, btw). They have forgotten about Priest, and he was one of the few other bright spots on that show and should be feuding with Sheamus for the IC title right now. And they still keep Nia Jax on TV weekly for some reason, despite the fact that she's the worst wrestler I've ever seen.

Raw is pitiful. I used to think they just needed the Draft to shake things up, but I think the creative team would ruin Stone Cold or early NWO.

Also didn’t realize Omega was so perpetually injured?

According to the latest reports, AEW Champion Kenny Omega, one of the premier heels in the business, might soon undergo a drastic character change.

Apart from Tony Khan's promotion, he also holds the top titles in IMPACT Wrestling and AAA. Though there's no arguing that Omega is one of the best in the world, fans have grown to despise him lately due to his usage of underhanded tactics in his matches.
However, it seems like the AEW might push back on Kenny Omega's heelish tendencies and instead project him as a good guy sometime down the line.

Dave Meltzer of Wrestling Observer Radio reports that though Omega portrays a villainous character right now, he might turn babyface sooner than later. The report also suggested that the AEW Champion's recent struggles with injuries might have delayed the aforementioned plans for him.

Omega mentioned on the AEW podcast that he had seriously considered retirement or atleast thinking it could be soon. He’s pretty much worked hurt since he won the IWGP heavyweight title. He worked with a fractured heel during that run. Then in AEW he’s had a lengthy list of injuries, a few of which I don’t know how he managed to wrestle with. He said he’s been taking days off at a time and the pain isn’t getting any better. He clearly hasn’t been able to train like he used to. There’s a difference in his body even just from back a year or so ago.

But the thing that made him keep wanting to wrestle was the fans that have been at the last few shows. He’s only 37 but has a lot of mileage and a chunk of it working a strong style.

I’m sure several here love hearing he might retire early but it would be ashame. He’d be wrestling’s Barry Sanders.

Lol, this makes no sense at all. That’s his job as a bad guy, lol.

there’s nothing about today’s wrestling I understand, lol

I would have to imagine Omega’s last NJPW run took some years off of his career. You just can’t go and go like that without your body breaking down. There were times during the Okada matches the dudes body looked like it should be broken in half.

I personally like Omega, so I hope he can try and tone it down and maybe reinvent himself some and save the big moves for special matches. Granted, that’s something most wrestlers should do. Probably an unpopular opinion, but it might be best for him long term to eventually go to the WWE like AJ Styles.

Bunch of random stuff

AEW did 487,000 viewers Friday night, up slightly from last week.
However they still did as much in the 18-49 as NXT which did 669,000 viewers last Tuesday

Former TNA announcer Don West has been diagnosed with a brain lymphoma.

Regal’s announcement is supposed to kick off NXT and Samoa Joe is back stage.

I have to say that AEW sure has been really promoting how inclusive they are for LGBTQ communities. Not sure what has brought that on unless someone is saying Sonny Kiss is making fun of them. Anyone know the reason behind the push the last 2-3 weeks from the announcers and the merch?

My guess is June.

They also have a woke fanbase.

Tell you what, ol Matt Cardona is having a good time as a "Free Agent"

The swerve on GCW in attacking Gage was fantastic and he got true nuclear heat.

If there's one thing he's been able to do, its get himself over.

I'm enjoying his MC True Long Island Story with the lookback at 2011 WWE when he made his improbable run

Have to give AEW some credit for this one, since they can't run MSG or the Barclays Center they are doing something different. On September 22nd Dynamite will be from Arthur Ashe Stadium, home of the U.S. Open.

No comment on the "coolest wrestling company" tag. Some will agree and many won't.

I couldn’t believe this until I listened to the clip

I can’t decide who panders more: Meltzer or the main stream media. Good lord

Meltzer is such a POS. It kills me how so many people believe this guy as the gospel. He lies so much for content. He has a smug hipster attitude for anything that’s Japanese-wrestling related.

It's safe to say AEW has turned out to be a formidable alternative to WWE by focusing on in-ring action and logical storylines. Plus, its consistent TV viewership and buy rates paint a rosy picture of the company's finances from the outside.

However, everything isn't as hunky-dory as it seems to be for AEW. Eight-figure investments into the video game section ensured the company remained in debt in 2020 and didn't turn any profits.

On top of that, with the crowds not in attendance for most of 2020, there was no revenue from ticket sales, and the promotion was dependent mainly on the television rights fees from TNT.

AEW President Tony Khan was recently profiled by Forbes, in which he delved into the finances of the promotion.

Despite the aforementioned issues, Khan sounded optimistic about making decent profits in 2021 due to AEW's upswing in pay-per-view purchases, fans returning to action, and the debut of their show, Ramage, on TNT in August.

The $43.75 million AEW received from TNT last year made up the largest share of its revenue, but that’s a rounding error compared to publicly traded WWE’s record $974 million in revenue in 2020. Still, AEW’s pay-per-view numbers and ticket sales are growing, and the new show will add to its coffers. Khan expects its wrestling division to be profitable this year, though an eight-figure investment in video game development will keep the company in the red for now.

Cornette has been posting some of the Cameos he’s done on his YouTube page, they are pretty funny.

So we are now getting the Rey vs. Roman HIAC match tonight instead of Sunday.

PwInsider reporting a few NXT folks are backstage tonight and will be having dark matches for WWE officials.

Good that doesn’t warrant ppv billing - sd is perfect

Agree about Miro, why they wasted his first few months is beyond me.
Thought Smackdown was really good, Dynamite was ok. Maybe they realized no one is watching live so no sense putting on a huge show.

Updating from last night Karrion Kross (with Scarlett) and Bronson Reed did dark matches. There’s a draft coming after Summerslam so maybe they are getting called up.

Also Becky Lynch has been at the performance center and is probably returning by Summerslam.

I think I've said this before but I'd take WCW/NWO Revenge but with up to date graphics and sound over anything else
Absolutely. That and No Mercy/Mania 2000 were the best wrestling game. I do like FirePro which is hella fun and has so many cool customizations that everyone creates and downloads.

Q; How long can WWE keep raking in money for an absolutely sh!tty wrestling product?
A: The length of their TV contracts.

When WWE's current television contracts run out, who in their right mind will give them even 25% of what they are currently being paid?

If you're a McMahon, this is actually a very opportune time to sell.
