CI Wrestling Thread #56

Strowman and Black are mindblowing. It was said Vince was impressed with how Braun carried wwe during his title run and didn’t Black just return last week after a long time away?

I bet Braun regrets those tweets last year about all the indy guys who were out of jobs. I’m sure he will be seeing it thrown back at him a lot today.
Probably.

I’m sure Braun will air it out in a podcast somewhere but I wonder if there’s something else going on with him as he’s been very open about mental health issues/depression.

I’m a big fan of Braun. He was always fun to watch.

Wonder if Braun getting released means Brock is coming back soon?

Also if it’s shedding salary how do they not cut Goldberg he has to be making a crazy salary?
WWE has been laying off people backstage that have been there for 20 years. I’m very curious what’s going on. Between this stuff and the move to peacock (which I hate), it just makes you wonder.

I believe this puts Brain's release in perspective.

Guess Black's release means that Vega ISN'T returning.

WWE appears to be so much for sale that it's in The Trader...

If WWE is sold to an entertainment company, AEW will be on top within 5 years.

Andrew Zarian reporting more releases coming. Rumor is Liv Morgan, Keith Lee, Angel Garza and Humberto Carrillo.

All releases have a 90 day no compete. All Out is in 94 days.

Black is already liking Youngbuck tweets. I see him in AEW for sure given his connections there. I really hope Lana doesn’t go to AEW. She needs to be kept away from Miro IMO. Murphy and Omega would have amazing matches, I could see him as a signing. Riott would be a great fit.

I think Braun may be just as likely to quit wrestling as he is to sign elsewhere. He was as wwe as it gets and would likely have to mend some fences wherever he would go. While I’d love to see him feud with Archer after their Twitter spat last year, I’m just not sure how he’d fit AEW.

I’m guessing the majority of these people end up with Impact like most of the wwe releases over the last year.

Two interesting things of note: a couple weeks ago Zelina Vega was back at the wwe pc and it was said she was going back to wwe. I can’t imagine that’s still going to happen now that they’ve released her husband.

Also Sean Ross Sapp said the only way he can rationalize these releases on top of all the others is that Vince is getting ready to sell wwe. Dave has mentioned this recently as well I believe.

Man, TK is getting the checkbook ready boys. That new TBS deal came at the right time. Samoa Joe, Strowman, Black, Riott.... AEW is going to look completely different this time next year.

Well, we went from WWE locking every wrestler they could into contracts before COVID to letting go people who we all thought WWE was hanging their future on. Braun is a total head-scratcher.

My WAG is that WWE just told everyone if you want out, they will let you out, logic being the people who go didn't want to be there and the people who remain want to be there and are committed to the success of the company. Again, that's a WAG, because this is totally illogical.

1) How does releasing some very prominent wrestlers from their contracts make you more attractive to a prospective purchaser?
2) AEW is already heavy with talent, obviously some good wrestlers are now on the market, but IMHO AEW doesn't need any of them, there's a huge glut of wrestlers now available. So it will be interesting to see what happens to all the wrestlers they have released recently.

I can’t help but wonder if Khan knew about some of these potential releases because in the past week he and a couple others have mentioned a “new era” of AEW coming.

Awesome Kong and Shanna’s AEW contracts recently ended and weren’t renewed. I’ve read that there’s others who have contracts coming up as well.

Because you show more profit to investors when you release a bunch of contracts.
That just seems such a transparent motive, easily uncovered if someone is doing the slightest of due diligence. Hell, everyone online is already speculating that they are doing this as a precursor to selling WWE, so unless the prospective purchaser is an absolute idiot, what's the point?

What’s odd about the timing was the whole wwe/njpw forbidden door stuff last week - maybe njpw will buy wwe?

I think Goldberg has a contract for a certain number of appearances. I think he is almost finished with them.

Sapp said about an hour ago that the NJPW/WWE deal didn’t go as far as some thought. I feel like a broken record here, but there are a handful of talents I think AEW just needs to give up on. Janella, Kiss, stunt are just three that come to mind. Bring in Black. He is a must. I think his style works great with AEW and their more “brutal” image.

If I read correctly some of the first AEW two year deals are expiring soon. Will be interesting to see who they let go.

Since they are going back out on the road guessing a lot of the Indy folks that were on Dark won’t be needed anymore.

I would add Nakazawa to that list but since he’s big buddies with Omega he’ll still have a job.

Nakazawa is the Japanese translator for AEW. That’s his main job there.

Janela, Kiss, Marko and Sabian come to mind but I don’t know if any will be cut or not renewed.

Nak is doing some behind the scene stuff, but idk what it is. They just signed Bear Country and Mark Sterling. I'm actually trying to think who else they would cut. The Dark Order guys actually serve some purpose and I don't think they'll cut Cabana or Angle (Angel?).

If wwe is sold, does Vince, the kids or hhh keep any kind of roles?
I saw some people speculating that Steph will take over. She has been doing the financial calls lately and she has never done them before. So people think that's indicating she's moving into more of a Vince role. Idk

WWE cut Braun Strowman [laughing]

Goddamn that company has been stupid as **** since about 2002 but that might take the cake.

Yeah but what does these salaries have anything to do with selling the company? Peacock having the network and these TV partnerships the last few years lends credence to a possible sale.

It’s also just unimaginable to me that Vince would ever sell though.

Looks like Braun was making about 1 million per year and wasn’t going to expire until 2023 and also wasn’t the best backstage - apparently showing up late/leaving early/etc so not sure if those were contributing factors or not.

Super weird that they cut him AND Black. Black looked prime for a push and then he’s cut
I swear I don’t even know who Black is or what he looks like. I wish I could contribute more but I’m gonna just keep living in the Attitude era and watch shit from then. It’s more entertaining.

Well as it turns out there was an error with the Raw rating. The third hour actually did 1,586 million and not 1,186. The total for the three hours was 1.551 million viewers.

Cutting the salaries means there’s less money being spent but still the same large chunk of it coming in. It makes wwe look more profitable to potential buyers.

I saw something earlier that NBC might be looking at buying wwe. Who knows if that’s true.

It’s hard for me to fathom that happening. But selling the network to Peacock (God I hate it soooo much. It’s so terrible to navigate) might be a sign of something. They’ve sliced and diced so many office people which is interesting. People who had been there for over 20 years.

Alveraz said today that Lauranitais called each person to give them the news. Then sent a mass text to all talent with the list of ppl released. So today he said that a lot of the roster have turned their phones off. Kinda like a Gillespie deal, can’t fire me if you can’t reach me. 😂

Something to remember, on top of all wrestlers being cut there’s been a ton of backstage and corporate people fired. Hell they wiped out an entire department last week or so. They have to be getting ready to sell. Maybe Vince’s kids don’t want the headache. Vince sees the alltime low ratings plus competition is popping up and he’s getting old. Maybe he’s just ready to get out.

I mean if I am Steph and Shane I would take the hundreds of millions they would get and just kick my feet up on a beach in Bora Bora for the rest of my days.

So does Larry Vaught (or whoever) get to chase Braun?

They’d get a lot more than that. Wwe is conservatively estimated to be worth 2-4B from what I’ve read. No way I’d pay that in its current shape though. I think UFC sold for 4 billion, as a comparison.
