Calzada over Murphy

The A&M cult does have some history giving up on QB’s a tad early. See Kyler Murray and Haynes King as two examples. Not saying Calzada will sniff the success either had after they joined teams with female cheerleaders, but he would improve our QB room at what is likely a reasonable price.
Idk about Haynes King but when Murray got there they had just got Kyle Allen the year before. Allen was the #1 qb for the ‘14 class and has played several years in the NFL. Murray enrolled in June and Allen was already name the starter. Murray transferred out in Dec. he was literally there 6 months.

Well, UT paid $9 million to get their quarterback and are in the playoffs. We just went 4-8 and won’t pay $3 million. We deserve to suck again.
UT is supposedly paying 2 mil a year but those numbers have been disputed. So it isn’t 9/3. It would be 3/ less than 2. Lol I’m assuming you’re talking about the WSU qb. It wouldn’t matter if UKnoffered more than 3 mil he isn’t coming here. Dude entered the portal with a no contact tag for a reason

Calzada is 24, a grown man mentally and physically. A highly competitive QB that can scramble and keep plays alive. Has developed into a dangerous passer all over the field. Would be a fun player to watch play. Will have a much better pass protecting line to play behind.

Go read Murphy’s X account. I don’t have X but a guy at work showed me and he is posting all UK stuff. Rowland post this morning that he was Murphy was ready to commit but the staff preferred Calzada. There was mention of an analyst that said for Murphy to succeed that everything had to be set up for him. He said Uk is not setup for Murphy. They said Murphy was a pocket passer and that UK wasn’t setup for a qb that could set back and pick a part a D. Rowland then said that was not the type of offense Stoops nor Hamden wanted to run. 😂
It was reported Murphy wanted $3mm. I suspect budgetary concerns were the primary driver of this decision.

It was $8mm over 4 years, so $2mm avg. So $2mm for a 5star/#1QB vs $1.5mm for Murphy? It becomes an even worse deal when you consider how much less NIL $ we have compared to UT.
edit: I'm amending this to say we have a similar NIL cache now, but we weren't close to UT when they signed the QB Comeoniwannalayea.

Boley was looking to transfer out this past season. Would be shocked if Kentucky is looking for a starter level QB. An FCS QB makes sense as a backup. Boley is likely the guy next season.

Yes, and then Allen ended up losing the starting job and transferring to Houston in 2015 to play for Tom Herman (before Major Applewhite took over and benched him).

Trevon Boykin was another who left A&M. He ended up starting two seasons at TCU.

I am sure there are others. Most seem to have been "lost" to competition or coaching changes. Me, I blame the cult!

Stoops wants a seasoned addition to the QB room who will be a strong positive influence on Boley's development. Stoops was Jimbo Fisher's DC at FSU when they were national champs. No doubt in my mind that Stoops consulted with Jimbo and received an enthusiastic recommendation for Calzada to fit the bill.

These re-tread QB's year after year are getting us nowhere. Levis was the exception rather than the rule until he was so beat up he couldn't play. We can't protect a QB and haven't been able to do so in about 3 years.

The offensive line has been a joke for the past 2 years, trying to fix that should be job one ,two and three for this staff

We have been unable to recruit OL that all the top football programs get the last few years. We bring back Wolford, who is said to be a good recruiter, and he brings in three OL that will need 2-3 years to get physically ready to play. Strey the only one that has a chance to play some after a year of developing. Why is the OL position so hard for us to get any 4 or 5 stars? We have been a running team the last several years. So how could we not get a true 4 or 5 star recruit here and there over the last several years?

I mean They are trying to do that lol we have 3 portal linemen committed with more to come. You can do two things at once

So… Calzada had a redshirt year and covid year then burned one year of eligibility. Could he potentially play three more years of college football given today’s ruling re: JUCOs?

I knew someone was going to bring this up. Why didn't A&M keep him then? Why didn't he play at Auburn?
He went 8-4 as a starter at A&M, and he didn’t play at Auburn because he had a shoulder injury and ended up having yo get surgery and was out the entire year.

I'll feel much better when Calzada commits/signs. Don't forget Maclin was a thousand yard producer a couple years ago, Hester was, I think, Oklahoma's #1 receiver last year, Farrier was a 500 yd producer before coming to UK, other portal WRs are being targeted, young Gilmore/Rodriquez are on the horizon. Maybe, just maybe, UK can FINALLY build a successful passing game.

To all you that act like we're missing out on the next Patrick Mahomes, here's what Duke fans think of Murphy:

- "Murphy was a vastly overrated transfer living on a reputation built while playing for a top 5 team at Texas. He suffers from poor accuracy, refusal to run to get out of trouble, and then throwing the ball into coverage to avoid sacks. He will likely be gone next year but the program would be better off if he was benched now."

- "Looked great for a couple plays yesterday, then looked like QBs from the Franks/Roof era in other parts."

- "I'm more concerned that he seems to decide what pass he's going to throw before he takes the snap . . .
he then passes to that person regardless of how many defenders are around him or if he has any chance of getting the ball to the receiver."

- Statue in the pocket. Total non-threat to scramble.

- Has a cannon for an arm, so will try to missile throws into tight coverage

- Someone mentioned a stat that showed him among the worst in the country when under pressure
That could be comments said about our last 3 QB's.

There will be a whole other round of transfers after Spring ball shakes out and guys learn their spots on the depth chart. If whoever we bring in from the portal is named the starter after spring ball, then Boley could make a decision then. but even then he might have to go down to the G5 or MAC level if he wants to be a guaranteed starter, someplace where he can showcase his skills for an entire season then transfer back up for a bigger payday.

I'll be honest, I'm curious to see what Saunders can do. I don't think we should be counting him out just yet. Dude can sling it apparently.

Agree that I’m sure Stoops reached out to Jimbo. Minor correction though. FSU won the title the year after Stoops left for UK.

The three OL portal guys we got so far say their strengths are pass protecting. So the QB's we have has a chance to play better than what we are used to with a legit pass protecting OL. Not sure how these guys run block but it is good to know that our pass blocking could be much better than what we have had for several years.

Not sure how to feel about Calzada or Boley yet, but the WR group outside of Maclin and Gilmore isn’t too promising at this point in time.

Is Boley really the guy who is gonna lead us anywhere though? I know at some point we have to start developing QB here but Stopps hasn’t done much with QBs outside Levis and Terry. Leary was ok. I’d say the best of the rest is Stephen Johnson and maybe Towles?
