Calipari told Washington, Diallo and Washington’s parents he was not going anywhere

Paul Washington and his wife, Sherry, were with the Team USA at the under 19 FIBA World Cup in Egypt to watch their son, incoming Kentucky freshman P.J. Washington, play for coach John Calipari.
“Our son is here, so if he goes, we come out with him,” Paul Washington said Sunday via phone after Team USA’s easy win over Angolia. “It’s just the two of us. We left our other two children at home. It’s been a wild ride, but it has been fun.”
Well, except maybe for a few hours early Friday morning when news broke there that a report had Calipari interested in possibly becoming the president of the New York Knicks.
Calipari quickly denied the rumor both on social media and by doing two national radio shows during Team USA’s one day off between exhibition games and the start of tourney play.
“We are here with him. He was tweeting stuff out (about not leaving Kentucky),” Paul Washington said. “He woke up to the news just like we did and it was crazy.”
Calipari met with P.J. Washington and his parents along with USA teammate Hamidou Diallo, another UK freshman, after the rumor broke.
“He told my wife and I and the players that he was not going anywhere,” Paul Washington said. “I am just glad we were here and not back in (Las) Vegas (where they live). If I had not been here with him (Calipari), I would probably have been a lot more worried and concerned about. But Cal made it clear it was not true and that’s good enough for us.”
