Cal offered lifetime contract from UK

Irreplaceable is a bad term to use.

But when you have a HOF coach that has had unprecedented overall success over a 10 year period, you want to keep that coach.

Not to mention, rumors of said coach taking another job can severely impact the program. His name comes up seemingly every year (clearly people want him). What better way to shut those rumors up once and for all?

That's the way I look at it anyway.
I get this, but just the idea that Cal wants to be shown the love and a lifetime contract follows...it’s gross to me.

I don’t believe lifetime contracts are good for any university. I believe it also reduces pressure and incentive.

If cal hadn’t already grown complacent a lifetime contract he will put it on cruise control. He’s ok with these types of seasons and when that happens it’s time to move to a new challenge

If "seasons like this," which was probably the 6th or 7th best team out of 10 that he's had had and in terms of tournament success 5th best out of 10 (overtime in regional final), are "time to move on" seasons, it's time for you to move on to the next bandwagon.

I don’t believe it. If he can win a title at VA why go to UCLA?

I mean, it's a good question. Not sure how much he's making at Virginia but if they win the title they'll want to lock him up long-term. PAC-12 is easier to win than the ACC as he won't have to clash with Duke and UNC every year (but he's still winning the conference with those anyway so maybe it's not a big issue). It's just a hunch that I've had, but we also have to level with the fact that UCLA is not the job it once was. They fired Ben Howland who got them to three Final Fours and now they can't even make the tournament.

True.TB strikes me as a different dude. Not necessarily chasing money or blue blood validation.

This is interesting as this suggests he will have a major role in choosing the next coach. Unlike Coach K, Cal doesn't really have a set of guys/former players/assistant coaches he is grooming to be head coaches. I wonder (I know it's probably 5-7 years away) who Cal would suggest or push for to take over at UK?

The good news is that goes both ways. Cal can also help recruit the next guy.

It won't be someone from his tree, they aren't worthy, but if I need something sold or someone recruited and I can have John Calipari on my side to help do that, I'm ecstatic.

He's going to be associated with the program. You actually don't know what it will entail. But a lack of information has never stopped you from being miserable. Just like when PJ didn't play again.
He makes 9.2 million. With crazy retention bonuses on top of that coming up.

We are showing Cal plenty of love. Another title might justify that type of contract.

Cal is a competitor that wants to be the best AND wants to leave a legacy. I have ZERO doubt that a lifetime contract will not change this.

Those critics that keep referring to his statement upon arriving here that he “wanted to catch UCLA in championships” should tell everyone how competitive he is.

This contract will keep the other schools from constantly telling recruits that Cal has one foot out the door here. Now let’s get going for next year!!

I'm sure there are bonuses and incentives in his contract so if he's about money there is still pressure.

Major. But then again Mitch is the same moron who gave stoops extensions and money for winning 6 games. Wouldn’t shock me if Mitch went all the way up to 15-20M per year to keep Cal.
Has nothing to do with Mitch, except that he must feel the pressure of UK fans who view Cal as bigger than the program. Or maybe it’s still the Gillespie tenure that spooks everyone into thinking it’s either Cal or obscurity

Retention bonuses are not real bonuses. Have nothing to do with meritocracy. Who wouldnt want a retention bonus? So you will give me 2 million...for hanging around another year? I suppose I can do that.

if you are one and done then I don’t believe that negative recruiting really matters

If you think we are the gold standard of college basketball due to being the 6th or 7th best team it’s time for you to move on. If we were going to build on this season I woyld be fine right now but the bottom line is we will take a big step backward next year bc 2/3 of our team will leave. Insanity doing the same thing hoping for different results. It has to change

Ambassador plus Stevens called him the other day. Seems to respect Cal. [banana] We good til the haters give up!

Yep that moron that gave an extension to a coach who went on to have the best regular season record in UK football history, damn such a idiot

Wonder if it's easier or harder to recruit to UCLA. Lot of West Coast players available but who wants to never be on TV.

I imagine recruiting to UVA includes getting to compete against UNC and Duke and beating them often

If I guarantee you in the next decade we'll go to 4 FFS and win a title while winning the most games of any team in the NCAA would you take it? I would. So, yeah, I'm good with "doing the same thing."

I love Cal and think he is the best man for the job here. But if that is what he is weighing he might want to run for the hills. He probably already has more money than he could ever spend. Any other school would throw him parades for what he has done here. While he does get a lot of love here too he also gets a lot of BS from the crazies. I would never want to see him leave, but I would understand, dream job or not if he left. It has to get old, I think that's why he jokes about dog years at UK and 4 million other coaches in the state.

What a lot of people don't talk about is UK isn't getting the elite talent the past few years and things have been more of a grind. I mean forget about KAT and Booker, I mean Fox, Bam and Monk. We aren't getting those highly ranked guys. Cal took a team this year with no one outside of maybe PJ, maybe KJ before the season started that would be considered elite and I don't think they even fall into that category, Top 10 and he still got us to the E8. It still took OT to beat us and yes the other team was missing a guy that scored like 12 points per game the last 2 times they met us, but they still have that backcourt. People are acting like Cal lost in the E8 with players like K had. Look at our players, no one ranked in the top 10. Love them and I am happy we have them, but I think people saying Cal isn't getting it done with elite talent are stretching it a bit.

Let’s be real, Pitino has two titles. We all know that the NCAA plays favoritism. Other teams are cheating just the same but they only enforce the rules on certain programs and coaches. It’s funny to laugh at and not see it in the history books, but he was the coach of the number 1 team in 2013 that won 6 straight games and won the national title. They presented them the trophy. To act like it didn’t happen is just denying the facts. If you’d like my list of best, current coaches for the U.K. job, it would be:

1. Calipari with an updated philosophy in recruiting and game planning
2. Brad Stevens
3. Billy Donovan
4. Chris Beard
5. Tony Bennett
6. Bruce Pearl

It's hard to count the 2013 title when it's not even hanging in Yum! Center and there is no trophy in the display case.

Coach K has 5 in around 40 years. I'm sure Duke fans are completely satisfied and don't want any more
I wonder if their fans are harrassing Coach K or his family on social media after losses. If they are you don't hear or read about it.

Listen, I make fun of them just as much as any other Cats fan, but it doesn’t take away from the fact that it happened. Not everyone got amnesia of a day in April in 2013. He did win a second title, even if it isn’t recognized. I think it’s a hilarious situation but that’s still how I feel about the issue. Winning two titles generally puts you in legendary status but he absolutely ruined his legacy with how scummy he is. Pitino was his own worst enemy.

Have to laugh at UCLA. Do they really think offering him LESS than he's making at KENTUCKY to come in there and basically rebuild that program? I mean damn, at least roll in with more money!

Not to mention with California state taxes and LA city taxes he would only clear around half that. He’d have to make around $11mil there to equal his $9.2 here.

That’s like saying I saw someone buy a car with stolen money. Just because it happened doesn’t mean he gets to keep the car.
