Cal offered lifetime contract from UK

It's not the same money or security as Kentucky and UCLA sure isn't Kentucky but it is still sunny California. If he or the little woman wanted to rub elbows with more celebs then that would be the place. I think he stays but what a temptation. UCLA doesn't come with lifetime contracts though and that spells love ... or does it spell scared?

Like Pitino?
Let’s be real, Pitino has two titles. We all know that the NCAA plays favoritism. Other teams are cheating just the same but they only enforce the rules on certain programs and coaches. It’s funny to laugh at and not see it in the history books, but he was the coach of the number 1 team in 2013 that won 6 straight games and won the national title. They presented them the trophy. To act like it didn’t happen is just denying the facts. If you’d like my list of best, current coaches for the U.K. job, it would be:

1. Calipari with an updated philosophy in recruiting and game planning
2. Brad Stevens
3. Billy Donovan
4. Chris Beard
5. Tony Bennett
6. Bruce Pearl

Horseshit. It was vacated. He has one title. You can play games about their serial cheating all you want. Just because SMU played and won in those bowl games then got the death penalty doesn’t mean those wins are still recognized. Same with the serial cheater Pitino.

LOVE IT!!!

I could only hope to have the same level of sustained success that we have experienced in the past decade. One or two better calls or bounces of the ball and that success could easily be tripled. To even be in that situation consistently and have the opportunity to cut down nets can directly be attributed to coach Cal and the work he puts in with these kids on a daily basis.

Add that to the fact that with all the FBI stuff going on, the scandalous agents, shoe companies, and we seem to be staying out of the negative headlines, it only makes what he has done even more impressive.

I count myself lucky to be experiencing such a great time to be a Kentucky fan. Having Cal sign a lifetime contract?

YES PLEASE.

We’ll have to agree to disagree on that. They can strip the title, but they can’t strip that tattoo off Pitino’s back [roll]. That whole situation is just hilarious.

I'm o.k. with it as long as he makes adjustments to what he's doing, not saying he's doing a bad job.Let's face it,the recruiting is not what it once was as far as getting those top 3-4 players. Not sure why but,you give Cal Zion,Reddish and Barrett,I think he brings home the championship.

UCLA representatives have met with former Ohio State coach Thad Matta, but he has withdrawn his name from consideration.
If that is true then good luck to UCLA. (You’d have to assume Hoiberg also said no earlier).

Just Zion on this team and we are champs.

I’ve been to UCLA games and that fan base is shit compared to Kentucky’s or at least when it comes to basketball.

The weather is great, lots of more entertainment, and maybe Ellen would’ve liked Cali more but I doubt it.

The west hasn’t won a national title since 1997.

I haven't read a recent FORBES article that describes how much money men's basketball brings to the university. I suspect that there is a strong R.O.I. for UK at $9.2M/year.

Let's face it, at some level, it is a business decision. You pay the guy unless he does something illegal or the net basketball monies dip below his total compensation, right?

If cal hadn’t already grown complacent a lifetime contract he will put it on cruise control. He’s ok with these types of seasons and when that happens it’s time to move to a new challenge
I was wondering where the haters were? Now crawl back in your hole

I hope he takes it. We're in the conversation for a title every single year with him as our coach. In a single elimination tournament you really can't ask for more than that. We lost our last two elite eight games in OT and on a buzzer beater. With the tournament sometimes the ball just doesn't bounce your way. Anyone who wants him gone is crazy.

If it plays out as we all hope it will...that Cal is here till he retires in another 5-12 years...do you think he will bring in a young top notch assistant with the intent, announced or otherwise, that he will take over when Cal retires?
UNC basically had that, but Roy was the coach at KU at the time. We had it with Joe B.

I'm not worried about UCLA. There is absolutely NO college job that is as good as the one he has now. The only job that would worry me is if the Lakers come calling. They already have LBJ and could possibly sign AD and/or Cousins. That may be too much for him to say no to.

As he should. He was hired to win titles here. He said he wanted to catch UCLA. He has one title in over 30 years of coaching with an EMENSCE amount of talent. I would hope that he is disappointed in that as well. I imagine any major competitor would be.
I've been mocking posts all day, but this is in the top 3 dumbest, and I just don't know if I have the energy for it.

I love how Cal averaged 30 wins a season and made multiple deep runs in the tournament at a school that had one NCAA appearance in history (in the early 60s), and you summarize that as a failure.

I love how you think that he's had an "immense" level of talent for 30 years (try the last 2 years at Memphis until now, during which time he's been as successful as anyone in the country). Go look at the roster he used to beat the '96 Cats by double digits. There was exactly one high major recruited player on that squad.

I love that you mangled the spelling of the one word in all caps.

The only person who should be disappointed here is your grade-school English teacher.

the only part that give me heartburn - and it really sounded more like speculation on the writers part was Cal trying to decide if he was appreciated enough to stay at Kentucky

if that is true on his part then there is some read between the lines stuff there

and I'm not gonna listen to any bullcrap about him getting worked up over some internet message board posters.

So if you were a coach with over 40 draft picks, a plethora of resources and support, and now at the Mecca of basketball, you wouldn’t consider one title disappointing? As a competitor, the pain of a loss sticks with me more than the joy of a win. If I were a coach and I looked back on my career with the resume Cal has, I’d be thinking about a lot of what if’s...

Great news, especially with that consultant to the program role. He's too important and too influential and too creative not to keep him involved even after he retires.

And since I know it's heading that way, for anyone critical of Cal, establish your criteria for a great coach, in concrete, measurable terms, and then give us your list of great coaches and let's apply it to them. If you can't or won't, then keep your emotional whining to yourself.
Good Lord

The concern I have is that somehow Cal has become bigger than the program, and he is now seen by a majority of fans as irreplaceable.

This is not good in any way..not for UK and actually not for Cal.

Irreplaceable is a bad term to use.

But when you have a HOF coach that has had unprecedented overall success over a 10 year period, you want to keep that coach.

Not to mention, rumors of said coach taking another job can severely impact the program. His name comes up seemingly every year (clearly people want him). What better way to shut those rumors up once and for all?

That's the way I look at it anyway.

The University of Kentucky has offered John Calipari what is essentially a lifetime contract extension in response to a lucrative offer the coach has received from UCLA, The Athletic has learned.

UCLA offered Calipari a contract worth approximately $48 million over six years, according to a source with direct knowledge of the situation. The contacts between Calipari and UCLA have been more extensive than previously reported, but Calipari told UCLA last week he is not interested in leaving Kentucky.

Kentucky gave UCLA permission to speak with Calipari but did not take seriously the possibility that he would leave, partly because in the past UCLA has not committed nearly the same type of financial resources that Kentucky has for basketball. (Calipari is the highest-paid basketball coach in the country, making $9.2 million this year, according to the USA Today Sports database.) Once Kentucky learned how serious UCLA’s offer was, it offered Calipari, who turned 60 in February, the extension. The school is not looking to substantially enhance Calipari’s annual compensation, but the new contract would include a 10-year term as coach plus a promise to serve as a paid ambassador for the school after his retirement. Calipari’s current contract runs through 2024, after an extension in 2017.

Once Calipari told UCLA he was declining its offer, the school shifted its focus to its next tier of candidates. UCLA representatives have met with former Ohio State coach Thad Matta, but he has withdrawn his name from consideration. UCLA also wants to pursue Virginia coach Tony Bennett, but he has declined to have any conversations until his team is through playing. The Cavaliers will face Auburn on Saturday night at the Final Four in Minneapolis.
I'm cool with offering him a lifetime contract, maybe it'll help kick some of the "fans" off the Kentucky bandwagon.
