Fine, slobber all over yourself like a lot of people did last year and the year before. I'll wait and see how things play out...hopefully better than the previous two years.Because we can't talk about games that haven't been played yet. Fun to project what might happen.
I don't think wanting to talk about games if you are fan is slobbering all over yourself. What are you doing on here, the games aren't being played today.Fine, slobber all over yourself like a lot of people did last year and the year before. EDIT EDIT EDIT...Why am I even posting this on the Football board. Sorry folks.I don't think wanting to talk about games if you are fan is slobbering all over yourself. What are you doing on here, the games aren't being played today.
It never actually happened before. It was just a tall tale Bryant admittedly made up for the banquet circuit.Well, it has happened before, but this is more like that old country song......Cal got the goldmine, CMS got the shaft.
It happened. Not the cigarette lighter vs. the Cadillac story. That was made up.It never actually happened before. It was just a tall tale Bryant admittedly made up for the banquet circuit.
The "it" being discussed was the cigarette lighter. You do realize the biggest victim of the point shaving scandal was Adolph Rupp? To pin all the blame on Rupp and basketball is unfair. As I always understood it the limit on out of state commitments was a huge factor. I have never heard any suggestion that Rupp had anything to do with that. There are a multitude of other story lines and rumor I'll not get into. To act like it is simply a matter of Rupp being hostile towards football is childish and silly. It happened. Not the cigarette lighter vs. the Cadillac story. That was made up.
But you better believe Bear left UK because of Rupp and the difference in the way football was treated vs. how the basketball program was being treated.
Especially after the point shaving scandal.
Wow. Never said anything close to that. Not going to go back and forth with you.The "it" being discussed was the cigarette lighter. If his demand to stay here required firing Rupp then I say good riddance. I don't get how that gets UK labeled as cheaters given that UK and Rupp were the ones being cheated. Many schools were actually caught up in that and the treatment UK received by the NCAA and media was not fair at all when many got off very lightly for the same thing.Wow. Never said anything close to that. Not going to go back and forth with you.
You might be family.
No one ever said Rupp was guilty of point shaving, but his players were, and he and UK bore responsibility for his players getting involved with gamblers. It cost the UK basketball program dearly in lost championships and labeled UK as cheaters. A reputation we still have trouble living down even today.
If you truly know the real story, then you know that UK didn't follow through on their commitment to Bear on what was going to be the result of the point shaving.
Have a good day.
The fact is that neither sport comes close to making what the TV contracts are bringing in, and of course that is mostly due to football. But there is no reason that our AD shouldn't be able to keep both coaches happy facilities wise, unless of course the Director's Cup gets in the way. Football is a much bigger money maker now, but it is also much more expensive, why do you think so many U's that have great BB programs don't even have a football team? Both have their place and UK is fortunate to have very good programs (since mitch was forced to spend on football AND the SEC football teams made so much money available). The TV money from football is crazy now, but BB is doing just fine also.OK. I have been holding off on posting this for several days now because I know I am going to catch hel* from some posters for saying it out loud.
I have never seen Cal happier and I have never seen CMS more upset at what is taking place , specifically with recruiting and NIL at UK right now.
Turn back a couple of weeks. Cal was pi$$ed. Pi$$ed at Mitch and his stand on NIL. Cal couldn't sign a top player that was actually going to play at UK if his life depended on it.
Cal was leaving. Cal was retiring. Cal was angry. Cal is going to meet with Mitch and get some things ironed out on what HE needs to be able to recruit the top players again.
Suddenly, Wagner is back in the picture again. Dillingham decommits and is looking at Cal, Bratcher is interested in UK, Cal gets a couple of top commitments to UK again.
Cal is happy. Swaggy Cal is back. Happy Cal announces he is staying out his contract. Suddenly, all is well in Happy Cal's camp.
Meanwhile, CMS is as pi$$ed as I have ever witnessed him publicly. Can't compete with UT to sign a 3 star CB out of Bowling F-ing Green, KY.
He and Marrow go from a top 15 team back to a top 35 team in recruiting. Every school in the SEC not named Vandy is pouring NIL money into football........other than, guess who??? Mitch and UK.
And please don't give me that "Mitch will never.....". Seems like he was able to get enough booster help to get Cal over the recruiting hump and happy again.
Just unable to reach out and help the number 1 money making sport on campus and the coach that worked an entire decade to drag UK football kicking and screaming to the upper echelon of the SEC and build a real football program at UK for the first time in history.
And for CMS to have to go on a live broadcast and beg for support for our football program TWICE, makes me sick to my stomach.
CMS is at the point of offering his own salary for NIL, but of course THAT is against the rules.
Cal is happy. Cal is staying. Mitch is happy. Evidently the big money boosters are satisfied......
And our best football coach since Bear Bryant is about to blow a gasket.
I think I know who will and who will not stay out their contract at UK.
Unbelievable.
I think anyone whose wife screwed Bear should have moved to College Station, Texas..
As to your detailed and colorful description of the people and events, let me remind you that you knew nether the Bear, the pharmacist, nor the snatch!!
No Knoxville employee published anything. Learn the facts. People with the Knoxville collective gave an interview to The Athletic and provided copies of the $8M contract they were offering the Cali QB.
Same as is going on all over CFB by those taking advantage of NIL. Coaches recruit, by the rules, then the collectives make the money promises.
Except at UK. Only head coach in the nation who feels the situation is so desperate and program-ending he has had to beg - twice - in the media for help. He is in such an awful position from his AD that he has to offer his own salary to try and keep what he has built here competitive.
This is your cue, paste your Barnhart defense paragraphs now.
Has mitch done all those things? Not that I would be the least bit surprised.No. Not how it is working anywhere.
No coach at any school right now is offering NIL to recruits. That's the whole point of COLLECTIVES; they are not coaches or school employees, so they are the ones to offer the deals. Coaches go to a kids HS and recruits him....few days later the collective comes by and tells him what he can get. Clean separation.
Problem (as I understand it) at UK is Barnhart has threatened people interest in setting up collectives with banning from UK athletics, taking lux boxes, excluding their companies from advertising during or at UK sports. Mitch thinks someone from the NCAA next yr will present him with a big ass trophy for making sure his school followed the rules AS INTENDED, if not actually spelled out.
I know it happened but when did UK start restricting out of state football recruits? I thought it was later but can't remember.l know it's about Cal and CMS, but the analogy does not work because it is based on a false premise. If it turns out the way you suggest, and it well might, it will be the first time it has happened. The Bear left Kentucky because of Happy Chandler put restrictions on football recruiting outside of Kentucky, so in effect it was the governor, not the AD, that caused the Bear to leave. If MB causes CMS to leave because of NIL, that will be the first time an AD at Kentucky has caused a football coach to leave because of a situation like this.
Late 50’s, IIRC, well after Bear had left.I know it happened but when did UK start restricting out of state football recruits? I thought it was later but can't remember.
The Hack said after the Bear left and he knows more about it than I do. Maybe the Bear could see the handwriting on the wall.I know it happened but when did UK start restricting out of state football recruits? I thought it was later but can't remember.
Given the shenanigans at louisville one would think a lot of folks turned a blind eye when Pitino was in Lexington.I assume Bama boosters had no issues with turning a blind eye when the Bear was on the prowl.
Funny how that works differently at otherplaces. I recall Charlie Strong caught up with a major UL boosters wife and no issues there w/hoghead Jurich.Given the shenanigans at louisville one would think a lot of folks turned a blind eye when Pitino was in Lexington.
Bear’s exit had nothing to do with a lighter, a watch, a Cadillac or restrictions on recruiting.Maybe the Bear could see the handwriting on the wall.
I suspect the unwritten rule has always been win 10 or more, and take your pick: have a rough season or two, and morality clause suddenly becomes important.I recall Charlie Strong caught up with a major UL boosters wife and no issues there w/hoghead Jurich.
I listened to that game against the New York College were points were shaved and almost broke my radio because I could not understand why Kentucky was playing so badly. Wouldn't have bothered me if Rupp had been fired at the time. Twelve year olds are not very forgiving.Bear’s exit had nothing to do with a lighter, a watch, a Cadillac or restrictions on recruiting.
He was justifiably but hurt over Hornung going to Notre Dame, and had issues with Rupp. Bryant was told Rupp was going to be fired after the point-shaving scandal and the federal court denunciation of the basketball program in 1953.
Wish we’d had a twelve year old in charge, at that time!!Wouldn't have bothered me if Rupp had been fired at the time. Twelve year olds are not very forgiving.
Stoops gets a Set of Steak Knives.Calipari getting a Caddy, Stoops a wristwatch??
I think you are right, maybe a factor in us losing a very good coach in Collier, who went to Cleveland and won an NFL championship. But Colliers record went down steadily after the Bear's talent was gone.Late 50’s, IIRC, well after Bear had left.
I was a UK student from 1961-65 and that is the story I heard around town. That Bear Bryant was a womanizer. As you said Lexington only had about 50,000 residents and everybody was into UK sports. The sexual revolution had not yet arrived and screwing around with somebody's wife or young girl was frowned upon.Happy was elected Governor in 1935-39, and 1955-59, hence was not in office when Bear left.
There was a legislative vote to restrict recruiting in 1956, 57, or 58, during Happy’s second non-consecutive term, but Bear left after the 53’ season.
Happy may have had something else to do with Bear leaving, as one of the persistent rumors was that Bear bedded a Chandler girl, but those rumors were all over the place regarding Bear Bryant.
The most compelling account I have ever read of his decision was that he had been promised Rupp would be fired after the point shaving scandal. Rupp was retained close in time to Bear’s loss of America’s Golden Boy, Paul Hourning, to Notre Dame.
Bryant and Rupp made amends, of sorts in the 60’s, appearing on one-another’s televised coaching shows, etc. But make no mistake: they distrusted one another, each having huge National profiles, but unable to avoid one another in a community hardly larger than current day, Richmond, Kentucky.
A close friend and huge UK football fan, who recently passed away, finished his hitch in the Army in 1963. He was speaking in ‘63 to a prominent pharmacist in downtown, after his return to Lexington, and the pharmacist bluntly told him that he (the pharmacist) and a number of other prominent gents laid the law down to Bear that his presence was no longer welcome, as he was screwing their wives.
I suspect it was a combination of all of these factors that led Bryant to College Station.
