Bring on basketball, typical Kentucky football

I agree wholeheartedly that the result is typical, but this team and these players are far from the typical ones we've seen so many times in the past. I've watched since the 1960s, and this team has by far more athletes and better players than most of the Kentucky teams in that span of fifty years. could almost argue that in the 50+ years of watching, we have the least positive history of any major college football program. However, last night, we went toe to toe with a team that beat us 45-7 last year. The talent gap is less. Things have improved, this team is still worthy of our respect and our following, and will be back with a vengeance, or at least should feel good about our dramatic effort last night. We should be back full force to attack the rest of their schedule. Last night should show them, and does show me, that every game on our schedule is winnable--we should not see one time a game where we are not competitive. In retrospect, we were probably a Jordan Jones away from winning--we certainly missed his talent and his energy, especially in terms of run defense.

Now, having said all that, I am frustrated with what I consider to be an uncanny repeat of events that always seem to be present in tough games for Kentucky. We seem to be beset with bizarre happenings that are so improbable, i.e., holding penalties on run plays, coaching errors, and receivers going unguarded, etc, that keep us from victory time and time again. So, yes, by that, the result is the same, a very typical outcome based on some typical bizarre events that may not be seen if you watched 100 games. That part of the Kentucky football scenario is just hard to explain, and in so doing, like last night, we have an uncanny ability to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.
Very good post. This is one of the most talented teams we have had in a long time. But, we still have the same dumb luck as always. At some point, the cards have to fall in our favor though... Right?

I see mention of BB games that were choked. Are there any 30 year streaks Kentucky Basketball has losing to a team....20 years??....10 years??....5 years??

Absolutely silly to compare the greatest basketball program in the game to one of the lowest in D-1 football. I will still root for them but it's always a heart break.

The teams you mentioned play in big boy arena's, Super Bowl, NBA Finals, College championship. College BB is about as far down the totem pole as women's gymnastics. Not a top tier sport when UGA, LSU, Bama put more in attendance then their BB teams. JV sport is being kind to college BB. Not a peep about it until February and a 2 week high.
Again I love my UK BB but accept the fact that we are great and noted for a sport that is not that viable anymore and is more middle school than college. Hurts that college BB is not popular and no one cares.

I really hope you have calmed down by now. You compared men's basketball to women's gymnastics? Have you bothered to look at any television ratings (including the regular season) to compare between the two, before making such an ignorant statement?

As far as "big boy sports", College football is definitely at the top. However, to make your claim about college basketball is one of the more asinine statements I have ever read in my years of browsing this board (p.s - that says A LOT).

So you really think Women's NCAA gymnastics could fill Texas Stadium, Ford Field, Phoenix Stadium, etc. etc.? What about college baseball.. something tells me you'll respond again that the nation only cares about it for two weeks. When does national TV cover any other ncaa sport besides football, and men's and women's basketball? By national, I'm talking about national networks, for the uninitiated.

While you're answering, please point me to the women's gymnastics section on ESPN or Fox Sports website, or any other college sport besides football and basketball (be sure to time how long it takes you).

Women's gymnastics gets bigger crowds at Bama, LSU, UGA and quite a few more. Just saying if Mens BB was bigger then might out draw women's Gymnastics.

Well that's about the silliest statement ever made on the board. You want to draw a conclusion by comparing attendance at the most successful women's teams with a men's team that doesn't compete at that level. Compare top to top or average to average across the country. Or compare percent venue filled for similarly successful programs. The numbers will embarrass you. I suggest a measure of common sense because the facts say your are blithering.

Soccer is the big boy sport according to world popularity.... so football people bashing basketball for being slightly less popular should know it would only be fair for soccer people to do the same to them. (I have a feeling football first people wouldn't like it turned around on them like that)

telling basketball fans they are wrong for prioritizing basketball will get you about as far as telling people in England soccer doesn't matter

No one is telling anyone what to watch. To come on this board and see the glee by UK BB only fans is horse shit. Pure and simple, UK has had their share of heart breaks and no need to rub it in. Wisky loss, UCONN, UNC DUke 92 come to mind. No one is running over acting like an ass. Don't care what the BB crew think, UK fan first and foremost so the shoddy comments don't play here. If you can't accept the hard facts that BB is not considered a big time sport anymore than I am sorry. I wish our primary sport was the biggest but its not.

BB not a big time sport? You are surely not so stupid as to believe that. If you judge success or failure by only the top spot, then nearly every sport fails.

I agree there is a lot of horse hockey in this thread, the vast majority of it dumped by you.

I am a UK fan period, no worries about me being a Cane fan or a Buckeye fan. Not sure I understand that it's quite alright for the UK BB dicks to come out after every loss. This is why I usually stay on HOB. No reason to do this, tough loss and don't forget it's a UK board in general. Don't like it and it looks bad because I love all things UK. I live and die FB and BB games.
Believe me I have seen enough heart breaks in FB for my 40 + years of watching. I have been heartbroken over the blown UK BB games UK has had over the years. I mean we have 3-4 choke jobs the last 6-7 years alone, not even counting 92, or playing LSU 4 times in 86, or the 84 FF game.
We all get bent after losses, but I'm not going to go and say I'm a fan of a better football program because I can't handle UK football losses and if you think UK as the only program to "choke" a game away you have a lot to learn.

Basketball is third or fourth ranked at other SEC schools

Not very accurate about the team talent. The East is again about as good a the MAC. Outside Georgia, there are no impressive teams. Florida barely beats us, barely beats Tennessee, Tennessee struggles with UMass, we barely beat SMiss and EKU gives us a game.

Brutal.. That was the toughest Kentucky loss since the Wisconsin game. Yeah they made some mistakes, but the team is still heading in the right direction. Still think they can get 7 or 8 wins.

Kentucky football and Kentucky basketball fans bickering might be one of the dumbest things I've seen on this board. I'd cheer for the Kentucky Chess team...And to be honest, if you DON'T support the other teams, I'm not sure you should be allowed to identify with Kentucky basketball.

I'm in with Blue, I bleed Blue. I've been a UK Football fan for over 50 years. One game doesn't make a season. UK has quality and very good players this year. The season isn't over at 3 and one. I could join in and say this and that but I wont. I am a UK fan, Win, Lose, or Draw!

I have all but stopped following the FB team other than to read a few articles about them. I don't know their names, I don't care really if they win or lose........I have heard all the, " this is the year" crap. I just don't buy into it any longer.......I read, listen and watch everything I can about the men's BB team. The reason is they most seasons live up to the hype. Don't come out and talk like you are going to be world beaters and then have EKU smack you around. I am sick of hearing coaches say, "we have got to play smarter, we have to get faster, we have to get stronger, we have to recruit better, it is all on us, the coaches". I wouldn't make a good water boy and I know all of the above! It doesn't make it any more palatable to lose to FLA because UK has much better talent. The season is long from over but 31 years is a long time.

So what do you do with the bb program when you hear(and reading you are probably one of these people)EVERY year that "this is the year for #9" and it dosent doesn't happen no matter how much talent is on the team?

I have supported the FB program since 1979 and we are 3-1 & have a great bunch of players. We will win more games this year. Fla. was a tough lost for player & fans but I am not going to give up on this team.

While I love and usually can't wait for the start of FB season. We are an improving program during the Stoops era. For me, the biggest difference between the FB and BB season, is I have little to no expectations for the FB team other than to compete and make it to a respectable bowl game. I know that in BB, we have realistic chances to win championships and have done so recently. I would never expect to win a championship in FB, we have never even won our division yet.

Dementia is a heart breaking condition to have and is really the only excuse for such a monumentally wrong post

This wasn't typical U.K. Football.

We lost by one. We usually lose by a lot more to UF.

In all seriousness tho, we spotted them 14 by not covering receivers and only lost by 1. As much as the result is crushing, for the majority of that game we were the better team. I can't remember the last time I watched this team face UF in football and felt that way.

Despite what happened I like the direction the team is heading in

Sanity is not permitted here.

How exactly does one cheer for both Miami and Ohio State in football? They're antithetical.

Bandwagon. By pulling for two of them, you surely will have at least one winner. Same way people in NY root for Duke. They have no ties to them, but they are fans.

Have to disagree. When we had 1st and goal at the 5 and had to settle for 3 is where we lost the game.
Disagree..We had enough points just needed to make a tackle on that play with Powell. should have been no gain. he made 2 guys look silly

Ala FB has SIXTEEN NC...no comparison!

No, they do not. I know their fans like to claim they do, but that is a lie. As at least half those title claims are dubious, and a couple are plain fraudulent.

As one example, consider 1941: Alabama finished 20th in the national polls, 3rd in the SEC (that's right, only third in their own conference), with at least 14 teams having a better record. Yet Bama preposterously claims a national title for that season because some shill publicist in Alabama made up a completely fake poll just to list UA at No. 1. Seriously, how much shameless gall does it take to dishonestly claim a title for that season?

For a primer on some of Bama's other dubious titles, you might take a look at this youtube video.

Every single one of Kentucky's claimed basketball titles is undisputably a LEGITIMATE title. The same can NOT be said for Bama football.
