Brad Underwood: UK kept letting us back in. It's what they do.

We did make some stupid turnovers and missed some FTs in the 2nd half, but they got no closer than 9.
So "letting us back in" is a bit of an overstatement.
Just dangling a little hope in front of them before ripping it away.

I mean he ain't wrong but still. Didn't like hearing that.
You know what you do...

Well a few of us who were watching from our couches--knew that Illinois would give UK ANY good look they wanted--Cats just needed to make the shots. They did. Also hilarious how SVG on the telecast confirmed that-how the Cats were getting any look they wanted.

BTW--when you get a train run on you like Illini did in MSG as their "home game" against Duke-and Iowa was putting up 90 on you--STFU. This is a man who gave up a 30-2 run in an Elite 8 game last year. At some point when you are the HC of all these teams--it's on YOU-not them.

Yeah I mean it's been obvious all season we've got a bit tight and careless at the end of games.

When teams start getting a bit desperate and the refs swallow the whistle... UK is absolutely a wreck. I think once we start getting more athletes this can be mitigated a bit. Right now everything has to be nearly perfect.

The Texas game was a prime example.
Didn’t have butler which makes a difference

There was a span of time when fouls got very lopsided and Illinois started hitting from three, so they cut into two massive leads. Could we have stuck to Ivisic better defensively? Definitely. Could we have hit our bunny shots and more free throws? Absolutely.

But, sometimes the basketball takes a favorable bounce and sometimes it doesn't. What a monumental douche if he said that. He diminished our team and his in one interview.

I didn't really take any offense to that. Don't much care for the guy from the 2 games I watched of him though.

"they've had a tendency to let teams do that" Like OP stated it isn't wrong. Probably due to the PG situation like someone else said.

Most of the season we have felt shaky. The last two games it feels like the guys are finally starting to click. Even when they made a little run before halftime I knew we would come out in the second half better than the first. Pope adjusts and plans during halftime and you can tell.

I don't care what happens Friday this season is already a huge success but I think/hope we can go further. Its bringing back feelings of nostalgia for me lol.

He's not wrong. I think I screamed "what are you doing?" at least a dozen times in the second half. And we got some fortunate bounces late. Butler's free throw that bounced up high before going in, the front end of a one-and-one, comes to mind. I don't know how that half court heave didn't go in. One inch higher and it banks in

Totally agree. We were REALLY good the first 10-12 minutes of each half and then got complacent and mistake-prone the rest of the way both times. Some bad shot selection, some poor finishing at the rim, etc.

Your Momma
Underwood
But thank you for saying that
Our players will hear about it this week.
We will get better

Go Cats

If the Cats had shot better from the free throw line the game would not have been close…UK needs to tighten up their free throw shooting for sure. GBB!

His comment demeans his own team’s effort. He did not coach them to close any gaps, UK let them back in.

If I was a coach, I would tell my team to keep playing hard, because UK has a tendency to not finish when they are up. But, I would avoid telling that in the post game interview.

Kentucky was active in the passing lanes and used its hands to get deflections and turnovers at the start of the game and the second half. But we tend to play dumb when we have a big lead. I've always attributed it to these guys are just not used to playing the type of competition that won't back down when you build a big lead so as teams keep coming at you, you force things, miss shots, and get tentative on the floor. To UK's credit, they never let it get closer than 6.

Hope the players hear it. A little more motivation this time of year never hurts but Underwood strikes me as a Dan Hurley wannabe so scoreboard bitch

I'll have to take OP's word for it, because I can't take 10:52 of that face. I will say that once we got the big lead then along came the regular string of mystery fouls. Fortunately we shot our way through it.

That’s right up there with Self saying they didn’t lose but ran out of time.

This Kentucky team has definitely let teams back into games this year but I didn’t see that yesterday.

Illinois is a talented offensive team so they hung around, but I don’t remember them ever getting back within 7 points of us and we never had a lead bigger than 15. I thought we did a good job keeping them at arm’s distance the entire game.

I wouldnt say hes totally wrong , but we are totally different team with lamont healthy and Chandler stepping up . But yesterday that TO that very easily coud have been a foul on 3 pt shooter ( BG Again) was a big moment. We did fail to score a few times and failed to guard the 3 a couple times , but its an odd comment to make right after the game , kinda throwing the players under the bus and taking no ownership of the L

Illini fans want desperately to be taken seriously. They thought they got their coach in underwood but the dude really under achieves and is not recruiting the portal well. Their program is like creighton, win one lose one in the tourney.

Well, they did cut a sixteen point lead to six with plenty of time. Carr’s goal was big.
And we kept fouling on difficult shots stopping the clock and sending them to the line. Drove me crazy.

No Brad, you were never in the game. Kentucky was playing with you like a (Wild)cat plays with a mouse. When you got close, Brea would hit a three, Oweh would make a layup, or Butler would make a steal. Now you know how the mouse feels.

To be fair, he said “they have a tendency to do that” rather than “that is what they do”. One, he is correct, especially recently and 2 that has less of an “edge” than what was posted that he said.
