Boise State offensive coordinator Bush Hamdan is being targeted as the next offensive coordinator at Kentucky

Can’t say I’m impressed by this hire. Got my hopes up with Faulker, but underwhelmed by this guy.

Very good hire. I’m guessing they’ll have to push the spring game back a week or 2 to help give them time to get the offense installed.

You need to bifurcate the coaching from the outcome. Coen is highly regarded for a reason. He was an NFL Wonderboy the first time we hired him. Now he's a second time NFL oc at an extremely young age.

Just because he wasn't perfect doesn't mean he wasn't very good
You will have to show where he has been called an NFL wonder boy. Outcomes are what makes you a superstar. Lots of people can talk. It’s the bottom line that matters.

I’m not sure how to feel about this yet. He has enough credentials to not be a totally ridiculous hire, but he feels like definite step below Rees and Faulkner, who most of the speculation centered on before this started leaking out.

I’m also not sure if I totally love reading that he’s big on pounding the run and then looking for play action. That just feels like a continuation of the slow paced ball control stuff we’ve gotten tired of over the last several seasons. It can work if you have the horses to pull it off, but at Kentucky playing against the rest of the SEC, I’m not sure we do on a consistent basis, and would rather have someone get a little more creative trying to score some points. This feels pretty underwhelming to me at first glance.
This is my main concern. We had some success with a run-dominant approach in the past but there was a definite ceiling on our program. And the SEC was in a relative rut at the time, meanwhile we’ve added Oklahoma and Texas and other programs are re-emerging. I’m skeptical we can even reach the success we’ve had in the past going run-heavy again.

We were run heavy out of necessity

None of us know anything about any of em except a clip here or there
If Stoops is cool with him I am he’s the one trying to protect a 8 million per year job
I’m sure he has a group in his inner circle he trusts
Luckett says he likes to throw to tight ends and his QB rushed for 500 yards
Two glaring weakness with Coen

First thing I said when someone asked me who the next OC will be...

"Don't care as long as 1. he knows how to use motion to gain a tactical advantage rather than pre-snap motion for motion's sake, 2. WILL THROW THE BALL TO THE TEs and install/execute hot reads in the offense, 3. RUN up-TEMPO or varied tempo extremely well as integral to the offensive system, and 4. not let off the gas until the game is completely over."

(I will add here that they need to have the receivers and backs run their routes in practice and pregame at full speed.)

Don't care what their name is. Don't care what their credentials are. Don't care who likes the hire. Wanted a young coach who could recruit and make best use of the talent on the roster.

Whoever it is, if they do those things and recruit, they will have my backing through the season and evaluate afterward.

Exactly. We were able to recruit road graders who were great at run blocking, but haven't done extremely well at recruiting great, pass blocking tackles out of HS. Guys that were going to the league were going to the big name programs out of HS even if they had to wait 3 years to start. You need those guys to win SEC titles passing the ball.

I was happier about it than I would have been when he was previously considered, based on his good year at Boise in 23. But now it looks like it's not a done deal, anyway. We do NOT need to fall through.

Double this. And everything in the last year or two feels like he’s trying to find success by recapturing the past….and that’s not how you find success.

As a Georgia Tech fan it’s hilarious that y’all thought y’all had a chance with Faulkner. 🤣🤣 GT left the SEC over 50 years ago and still has more than double the sec chips Kentucky has. 😂
It's hilarious you come here and admit you're a GT fan. GT is an engineering school and the highways in ATL are the worst in the entire US. Every single one of you should be kicked in the teeth for making our trips to FL take 1 hour longer because you suck at your jobs.

Now go back to being a school filled with people who don't care about sports and pretend that you have have real fans.

Also who the wants to live in Kentucky 😂
And now that I think about it.... I hope we fake interest in all your coaches just to bleed your poor ass school to death. I hope Stoops offers your DC next and you pay him tons extra to keep him and then we just laff at you.

This time last night I was not very excited to hear that Bush Hamdan might be the guy Stoops was focusing on. I looked at his history and saw he moved around a ton, changing jobs almost at a rate of once every year. I saw a guy with limited contacts in the south. I just wasn't overly excited and much preferred the idea of Tommy Rees.

But you know what? I've actually changed my mind. Between last night and now I actually took the time to go watch some of Boise State's games from this past season. I now have to admit I like the offense Hamdan runs better than anyone else we've been mentioned with, to include Faulkner and Rees. Just take a moment to go watch some of their games and then tell me you don't see a ton of potential in this offense at UK:

This a very balanced, creative offense that puts up a lot of points and is fun to watch. There's lots of downhill runs (which favors our personnel), he goes hurry-up at times, and he uses the TEs very effectively. He also was also on the 2017 Atlanta Falcons coaching staff, so he has experience in the Shanahan offense. That should make the transition between Coen and the new OC as smooth as possible. And it seems the one concern I had about Hamdan (recruiting) isn't such a concern. If he can bring 5 star QBs and WRs to Boise State's roster, he can certainly do it at Kentucky. This could actually be a brilliant hire.

This one doesn't get me excited at all. With $2 million to work with I expected better. Hopefully he changes my mind but it likely doesn't matter who we get. As long as Stoops is here, our offenses will probably underperform.

Yes I am anti Stoops and you are an idiot. Stoops is an average coach at best and you are a know it all who thinks anyone that disagrees with you is wrong. Just because you put a lot of recruiting info out there doesn’t mean you know more or your opinion counts more than anyone else. Mitch screwed the pooch with ridiculous contracts to Stoops and Cal but I have always been a huge fan of his before he did this . Don’t talk about things you know nothing about Messenger.
Yes indeed you are anti-Stoops, anti-Barnhart, and anti-UK. Thus, it is not apparent at all why you bother to post on a UK website, except that you get some kind of twisted filfillment from running down UK and throwing real UK fans like me under the bus here. There is no other reason for you to post your negative garbage. Things must be boring in your world. You contribute nothing here. You just ruin threads by bitching over and over. You can call the rest of us idiots all you want, but you are clueless and compulsively negative. What kind of a sad, miserable person thinks like you? You will deny this just as most malignant people do. So live with it.

Georgia Tech fan thinks we're after their coach and are pissed because they know their program isn't at the level of Boise or whomever finished near the top of the MAC. Go easy on the weasy from that OtherGA school.
GT avg 34,000 fans per game this year. That was good for 51st in the nation. UK avg 60K and was 27th in all of college football. I already pointed out how broke their school is compared to ours. At this point I hope he keeps talking smack because his school is just embarrassing. I Literally clink a link about GT football and it reads like a comic. It's not 1983 anymore.

We have no way of knowing whether or not Stoops talked with Faulkner. You are smart and sharp. You know how this works. But I will just say this much. If Stoops did talk with Faulkner, I would have expected Faulkner to be interested in a raise and a move to the SEC. If it was me, I would far prefer to live in Lexington than Atlanta. But that's subjective.

Yea. We know our qb was interested so I'm sure they reached out. Not sure what happened after that. GT fans on here being douchebags aside... I wouldn't have minded if it was him. I think I like this Boise dude better after what UKfan215 said.

I've always said we can't take the next step scoring under 30ppg. We are going to have to put points on the board to compete with UGA.

Marrow is our recruiter anyway so wgaf if this guy knows anyone here. At this point we have to take what we can get and the rushing things sounds like someone Stoops will like. Maybe it will help settle things down in the office. Having WR and QB experience is something I like.

Is there going to be a spring game this year or not?

FWIW, I would think coaching changes probably shouldn't excite us until we actually see the fit and find out how well they work for our program. An online website is not the real world. In the real world, all head coaches have to make hires and some of them work out better than others. The most senior OC in the SEC has been in his current job for 2 seasons. Many of our posters just do not know or understand this. Nature of the beast. Kirby Smart lost Monken and Lanning. Saban lost Sark and O'Brien. Coen was well qualified but didn't work out. Maybe Hamdan will work out. He certainly deserves a fair chance.

If the hire is made, and sounds like BSU is fighting like hell to keep him, I am pleased

He wasn't a name I frequently touted. But his makeup is pretty much what I wanted.

-young, 37 yrs old
-former CFB QB
-primarily coached in CFB
-SEC coaching experience
-CFB offensive scheme, including read/option & qb run
-power iso run up the middle, no more of the 3 yr failure to install wide zone

The Empty Barrels on this board would be clunking along no matter who was hired, finding faults and denouncing the guy. Stoops could have dug up Mike Leach, reanimated him & made him OC and the Empty Barrel would clunk that their brains are gonna be eaten.

Bottom line, the opinions of positive fact based fans don't matter, or the Empty Barrels. The opinions of the offensive players and what they think after Spring, THAT is who's opinion is most critical.

I wouldn't have minded Faulkner either although I assume Stoops either likes Hamdan better or else possibly Faulkner didn't work out for some reason. Given that this actually happened very quickly (notwithstanding that some posters fundamentally don't understand that), it makes me think Hamdan was very high on Stoops' list or perhaps actually #1 on his list.

Truthfully, I have probably researched Hamdan more than most people here have. Hamdan has been on staff at FL and MO. He was OC at WA, and QB coach with the Atlanta Falcons under Dan Quinn. Hamdan was actually a QB in college. He is obviously well qualified for this hire. Either this works or else it doesn't. But, given that he is well qualified, prejudging if it will work is lame.

Fake interest 😂 Faulkner was offered and said no. The fact that you had to make like 5 posts is crazy. Then you bring up murder rate like that has anything to do with daily life. Then you said that GT is a bottom feeder of the acc when GT finished 4th in the ACC and Kentucky finished 2nd to last in the sec East. Again Kentucky has never done anything in football don’t even knew Kentucky talked about it.

And before you say Acc is bad. The ACC had a winning record vs the SEC and B10. Also GT scored the more points vs UGA than anybody else. Including all the sec teams.

Maybe he did, and maybe he didn't. If he was offered, he turned down an SEC job with a better salary so he could keep living in Atlanta. (I wouldn't be caught dead in Atlanta, but that's just me. My niece lives in Atlanta and likes it.) And if he wasn't offered, that would make you a chump and a troll. Either way, GA Tech won't hang onto Faulkner long and nobody on this board cares.
