Bad C-rod news ...potentially

It’s very telling that Mitch mentioned doing the right thing for the NCAA.

Not the school, who I assume is #2 on his list.

Damn sure not the players, who I assume are #3…though, probably not.

Not evening mentioning the fact the NCAA THEMSELVES told you to go pay players. They aren’t asking for your guidance, Mitch. What a weird comment.

I just hope we have big money standing behind our program and players, doing the right thing for those guys.

It is absolutely maddening. I think he's been a good AD mostly and he really seems like someone who has his employees back but there are times he's just completely out of touch. When NIL first came about, you could tell his whole vibe just didn't want a thing to do with it. He was so grave about proceeding with caution and his concerns about disruption to players thinking about money now and upsetting team chemistry because some players might get more than others. Well Mitch, everybody thinks about money and everything in the real world has a hierarchy. Whether you work at McDonald's or at the corporate level of a Fortune 500 company, there is no such thing as equal pay so why this is going to be an issue on the field or a court and that the players can't handle it is stupid.
When there are rogue schools like Kansas or Tennessee that the NCAA is content to do nothing about, why all the handwringing? The only thing you are doing is damage to the programs because it's getting known you're an AD who's not on board with the kids getting a slice of the pie.

People bash calipari for players first but mitch puts them last and that is way worse.

Looks like Barnhart is more concerned with covering his own ass and angling for his next job since he is about to be crossways with both his basketball and football coach, he won't be here much longer if so.

I seriously doubt that. Barnhart will retire at UK, and has always put the University of Kentucky first. We have a modern, renovated football stadium and a new baseball stadium because of Barnhart. Our women's volleyball and tennis teams are national powers because of Barnhart. Our soccer and track and field teams have made great progress in recent years, and a UK tennis player just played for the national championship. Football fans may not care about that, but inside people who judge and support the athletics department do. Our women's basketball team won the SEC Tournament. Our baseball team was the only team all year to win a series from Tennessee, the #1 team. Barnhart is about to build a new football practice facility and a new track and field facility. Rupp Arena was just renovated through a joint venture between the city and UK. If Cal truly needs a new practice facility, Barnhart will get that done too. Barnhart sits on multiple national committees including the NCAA Tournament Selection Committee, a plum assignment for UK. UK's executive leadership trusts him. He is respected throughout college sports, and has received multiple extensions and raises at UK for just that reason. Forget about Barnhart leaving, and be careful what you wish for.

Football fans may not care about that,
I’m football first to the level of damn near football only.

Those New Year’s Day Bowls have meant a lot to me.

Barnhardt was willing to swing for the fences with a Big Tuna that spat the bait, but has been solid to outstanding in building a Top 15 football program, and a Top 15, all-around athletic culture.

I hope he dies in office years from now.

That is an interesting comparison....and is a good debate topic.

- Mitch feels from all we can see in putting UK first and kids way down the totem pole from his love affair with all the sports benefiting, new facilities, investments constantly, etc...and I'm not just talking football and basketball. But in this argument...there is no need to have as much push back on NIL as he's showing. All kinds of teams are openly doing way worse than UK and he's holding UK to a way different standard than the apparent rules being administered. So eventually, he'll be putting UK last as if we nosedive back to UK/Vandy for the cellar of SEC....Stoops will leave and fans will be seething.

- Cal....I"m not going to bother with his well deserved nonsense. He does so many non sensical program behavior and on court tactics (of lack thereof)....it's silly to watch it unfold.

I agree with you, as good as an athletic program as UK is across the board it's hard for me to understand how critical some are of him. Does UK have any program that isn't competitive? I know UGA has several that aren't. I think he has made some excellent hires and updated facilities, what more can be expected? As for why some are upset with him now about Crod, he most likely has more real information than anyone posting on here, with all he has done for the football program do you really think he would make a decision that would hurt it if he didn't think he had to?

All valid points, but the shift of focus in College athletics is firmly on NIL. End of story. He had better bring someone on board that has a vision for where this is headed, or we will get left behind.

If we want to continue to grow and build on what Stoops has built, as well as keep Mark Stoops here, you would think our administration would do whatever it takes to support him and his team.

I’d imagine that bs has already hurt us in recruiting. When Team A can basically hand a player a check, Team B makes you jump through hoops the NCAA doesn’t even require.
LOL, you must have forgot where you are, this is a UK forum, not a Thug U or nearby city school one. Squeaky clean. Everyone seems to have forgotten the TEN YEARS with ZERO improvements to our football facilities, while football was supporting all the minor sports in pursuit of the ADs all sports trophy.

How did that end up, we will never recover the hundreds of millions that football lost in the loss of 20,000 season tickets, the TWO disastrous seasons, AND the five seasons in a row we didn't go to a bowl game.

If it is a simple matter of him working but not being registered under NIL with the University/NCAA.....then just (1) complete his registration, (2) annotate "late entry," (3) put the school "stamp" & signature on the archived documents, (4) file them away, and (5) tell the NCAA "nothing to see here" and to GTFO.

UKAD needs to buck up like he owns the joint, stare down the anemic NCAA, and stand by his coaches and players.

GBB!
And when has he ever done that?

Maybe there is no “there,” there!!
There doesn't have to be with our AD. This would never have been an issue at other SEC schools making hundreds of millions from football.

Oh, we are making hundreds of millions too, mostly because of the other SEC football programs and TV money, 40 and 50 million from the SEC distribution the past two years..

Much like last year when folks wanted like 5 or 6 guys kicked off team over trumped up charges. Need to be like Dragnet and just deal with the facts.
No way of estimating how much that blunder hurt our football team. And I think it was engineered to hurt our team, otherwise why the long delay? They must have been familiar with our AD.

Yeah...so those kids basically kids got a 4 game suspension....and going into Florida and LSU games....there were just being worked into the rotations and needed even more games to get into game readiness. We won those games so it didn't hurt the team in hindsight....but this overly cautious approach to all things is par for Mitch's approach.

Now we're into this situation and we are after a last minute RB.....so all signs point to another over the top cautious approach by Mitch yet again. Very frustrated with him

How do you know he hasn’t done that? Not everything that goes on at Uk gets put on this site. Mitch is the best AD this school has ever had and the sensible people know it. NIL will destroy college sports as we once knew and loved them.

Mmmm.

I’ve gotten a few nuggets through the years,, alluded to them in posts, and generally been told I didn’t know “shyt.”

What little I have gathered has come during the actual seasons of play.

I think we have one or two posters who have some in-depth knowledge on recruiting.

Where have you been?

Not any first hand knowledge but from what I read at the time yes it is flawed. And I did follow it very closely at the time. He definitely was one of the highest character players on the team. what he bought was an over the counter diet pill to lose weight, but they decided that it MIGHT be used to cover up PEDs, And UK turned him in, let me know when that happens at Thug U.

Guilty until proven innocent. Already graduated but finished, banned for the whole year.
UK didn’t turn Jarmon in.

The NCAA’s contractor showed up in Lexington for unannounced, random drug testing a few days after UK trainers told Jarmon to stop taking the supplement.

It was bad timing for Jarmon, but there was absolutely nothing UK could have done to prevent the NCAA from becoming aware of his failed drug test.

At the end of the day, Jarmon screwed up. He was repeatedly made aware of the risks of supplements and of the need to clear any supplements with trainers before taking them. But Jarmon didn’t do that and that’s why he accepted responsibility for what happened.

That said, the NCAA should have extended Jarmon some grace because it was clear he had no ill intent and was a good kid. But there’s nothing more that UK could have done to restore his eligibility and UK had nothing to do with him being ruled ineligible in the first place.

How do you know he hasn’t done thatrst DECADE turnrd out turned oue to be pretty stupid in hindsight.? Not everything that goes on at Uk gets put on this site. Right, not doing one thing of any consequence for football for a FULL DECADE was a stroke of genius. of course losing those 20,000 season ticket holders didn't hurt anything either. And taking ALL of footballs money for HIS minor non revenue sports was really the last straw, he would have had a LOT more money for the minor sports IF he had given football half the support it deserved. Do you remember the days when the nearby city schools recruits made fun of UK's facilities?

Not picking on Barnhart but when people say he is the best AD we've ever had, that is very true, but it is also true that the AD role has completely transformed in the last 30 years. Most are now the sports department CEO's with business management backgrounds and in some cases, have little to no ties to the school they work for. I think Title IX changed a lot of that and I think AD's like Jeremy Foley at Florida changed the perception of what a great AD should be.
Up until the 90's, every school either had it's favorite coach doing both jobs (the Bear with Bama), a favorite hero jock (Cliff Hagan), or an AD chosen by a favorite coach to nominally be in charge so long as they took care of that coach and program before everything else (Bill Olsen to Denny Crum). The AD was just a fundraiser and that was the job.
So yeah, Barnhart is a much better AD than Newton, Ivy, Hagan, Lancaster, etc. , but it's not the same job either.

An ole timers perspective…
If you’re a football fan MB has been the best.
If a BBall fan? Meh…..
As a Mgr. of an Athletics Dept.?
Running clean means much…
Take which one speaks to you and like him or not….

How did you enjoy the FIVE years in a row when we didn't have a bowl game? Playing two in state programs that we shouldn't lose to and two other OOC gimmes. teams. "they sposed to be SEC". The criminal murder of our football program was the direct result of TEN YEARS of bare maintenance of the football program.

Isn't this the same AD whose NONE SUPPORT for football Lost us 20,000 season ticket sales? The one that did absolutely NOTHING to improve football facilities for TEN years? While the rest of the SEC was loadingp up on FOOTBALL-----the MONEY COW.

Yeah he is a lousy coach, he only has one of the best jobs in the country with one of the highest salaries. It is also hard to be a bigger success when everyone else is laughing at the NCAA. Do you think putting the players first might help recruiting just a tad? He can/t coach worth a lick but he has put more top draft choices in the league than anyone else.

All of the SEC football TV money rolling in he deserves ZERO credit for. Our athletic department would be broke if the other SEC ADs had followed his example.

And now he is our football hero, talk about some dumb football fans.

In all fairness he is also the same AD who stuck with CMS through some very disappointing years, spent millions on upgrading facilities including a new recruiting complex, stadium renovation and in the process of getting funds for a 2nd IPF, UGA didn't have an indoor facility until 5 years ago, UF is just getting one. Not sure if it's opened yet. UGA is in the front runners with this NIL deal either, but the reality is only a handful of schools are, and college presidents are getting involved in ways to regulate NIL. They met with the Miami guy this week. Truth is MB isn't being anymore cautious that 95% of the other ADs. Outside of SoCal, ATM, Miami. UT and Louisville who else do you feel is abusing the NIL openly?

Has it ? With only one Championship while catching lightning in a barrel how has all those draft choices helped UK ? No one coach has wasted more talent then Calipari

They weren't disappointing by UK standards. After the first year, we started winning some games and almost went to bowls. That was at least on par with the norm. He went through a spot where he couldn't get over the hump but the recruiting was out of this world by UK standards. When we finally settled in on an oc, we really took off.

I will absolutely give him credit for sticking with rich brooks. A huge swath of the fanbase wanted him gone.

To say he's the best football ad UK ever had is true but really isn't saying much. None of the others cared at all. However this issue will be his end if he doesn't loosen up. Both revenue sports need nil to recruit. It's just a fact. The archaic view and restrictions we have on it is nonsense and is already having an impact on recruiting.

You could very well be right about the NIL deal. But with only a handful of schools abusing the rule, and you know who they, the other 120 D1 schools could vote them out. Let them play the other 7-8 teams. Will that happen, not likely, but playing in the NCAA is not a right. It's an option
