Art Still was at UK football practice

I remember Art being named Southeastern lineman of the week AS A TRUE FRESHMAN. He was an incredible player and could control one side of the D line.
Still was a Superman for UK on D. His airborne planing in air 3 feet off the ground pic on the front page of the print Cats Paws is indelible in my mind.

On any predicted running play, UK (Curci) would focus the the D on the opposite Still was lined up. If it was a bad call, Still would correct.

There were several Outstanding D players on that team.

In 1977, Art Still made 22 tackles for losses. Still a Kentucky football record today. He put Chuck Fusina's lights out.

At half time at a game in Georgia, the Prince of Wales walked onto the field and shook hands with Art Still. Kentucky won 33 zip.

What's funny is that he's still the P of W waiting to start a job while Still has done his & is long retired.

I was fortunate to be a Freshman in Art Still's class. Probably the best 4 years of modern UK football history. I knew a lot of the guys like Art, Jerry Blanton, and Derrick Ramsey and they were great guys as well.

The dominant win over Penn State in State College was 1 of Kentucky's top football wins ever in my book. I believe we can, and Stoops will, reach that level again.

Was at that game in Georgia. On Vince Dooley's post-game radio show, the mod asked him who the thought performed best in the Bulldog backfield. Going to have to paraphrase here, but it went something like this; "That Still boy from Kentucky. He was in our backfield as much as anyone on our team".

Agree

Have wondered this a few times lol....

Is it Mr. Schwump or is it Mrs. Chwump?

Just curious haha.

It's Mr. Schwump, drawn from the character of the same name from the old Andy Griffith show. He wore an ill-fitted toupe and never had a speaking part, appearing in the background, seated on a bench, etc. Far as I know his true identity has never been determined.

Gotcha. And if you chose that to represent your posting style then that is deep man...deep.

Also have read before that Mr. Schwump was found to have been played by a man named Patch Wimmers. Looks an awful lot like him.

I was intrigued that someone could be on TV but no one knew who he was. Saw your post re Wimmers...have heard that but others have denied it. Kinda odd I think.

Agree. Glad to know there another Andy Griffith nerd on here like myself. Have you ever visited "Mayberry"? If not it's a must for any fan of the show.

TAGS is a great show. Just amazing it's been on TV uninterrupted for 55 years. Haven't visited "Mayberry" but certainly would like to. My old HS colors, blue and orange, are the same as Mayberry HSs BTW.

TAGS was long gone by the time I was born, but I was raised on it every evening after supper. I love small town country life and it just reminds you how good we have it. Man in a hurry is one of my all time favorites for that reason.

I was lucky enough to be a UK student for all of Curci's best. The Cat's had perhaps their best teams ever, and certainly some of it's best player's ever. Art Still stood above them all. He's not only a UK legend, he's an NFL legend as well. He was one heck of a football player. You look at some of those wins during that era like that 33-0 Georgia game, and it's hard to believe it happened. It did though. It needs to again!

Suit him up for tonight's game. Put him on the wide side of the field and everyone else on the weak side.
