Was this wrestling group around 84 or 85? Went with friends camping around Jamestown and the campsite had a rec center and one night 3 of the biggest guys I had ever seen came in for awhile. I was a sophomore or Junior in high school I think.
I'm not sure it that was the Savage timeframe, although I've slept since then. I'm an old man and I had to walk back to my age at the time. There's quite a few camping areas around Jamestown if you extend out to the State Park, etc. Savage was about my age, and I'm not sure he was around here at 31 yrs old. He wrestled with the Dale Mann organization in this area for a bit. My cousin traveled with them and Randy had that vibe of his back then. He actually never left character or that was just his way of speaking, "Yeah Man"...Lol
You could have seen a couple of the big guys with the Dale Mann organization. He discovered Hillbilly Jim standing on the street in Bowling Green, Ky, who went on to bigtime fame, and Lanny Kean from Jamestown, who wrestled as his partner as a team called The Hillbillys. Both of them were over 300lbs. As a tag team called the Hillbillies and in singles they went on to the WWF at the time, with Vince McMahon.
Dutch Mantell tells a story about Randy Savage and himself when they wrestled for the Nick Gulas organization in Nashville. After a night of matches downtown, they went to a Waffle House around midnight to eat, since most wrestlers eat after the matches.
When they went in and were about to order, one of the managers who was off that day getting married, came in and the staff all quit working for a bit to congratulate him and have a drink of champagne that the man brought.
Randy, who was standing there waiting to order and eat breakfast, said something derogatory to the guy about how much he cared about him getting married and how much he did care about eating. The married man responded in kind, telling Randy where to go and what to do with himself. Dutch relates that the verbal exchange escalated from there and they elevated the argument to fisticuffs.
Apparently, the married man did not know what he was getting into since he was in a battle with the man who later walked up and punched one of the Road Warriers in the face over a dispute about the latter's wife. In short order the married man found himself under the Macho Man getting his clock cleaned.
Evidently, before they even went to the floor, someone who knew it was Randy Savage, called the police and Mantell relates that there was several of them in the building in no time as Savage continued his assault.
A Police Lieutenant stepped forward and called Randy by name; "Randy get off him or I'm going to let this police dog loose on you". When Randy didn't comply, the Lieutenant let the dog loose and it bit Randy on the ass and held on, twisting its head as dogs do when they feed on wild carrion. Randy's attention left the married man and shifted to the beast who had him by the derriere. The Police Lieutenant called off the dog and Randy got to take a trip downtown to the police station where Dutch eventually got him released.
The next night, Randy and Dutch were on the wrestling card in a nearby town, and Dutch said as they were getting dressed, Randy came out and pulled his tights down below the offended butt cheek and said, "Look what that F*.king dog did to me", and showed Dutch a huge bite mark on his butt.
