Anyone Listening to KSR Right Now? Hagans and Cal Fight?

Cal or Ashton?

Might be in the minority here, but Cal yelling all the time about everything is embarrassing.

Being yelled at for a mistake someone else just made has to be disheartening. I don’t care how tough you are. Getting yanked immediately after making a winning play also has to get old. Cal does this multiple times a game. Noticed this last night specifically with Brooks in the first half. It’s as if every move Cal makes in game is just on a whim.

Oh you’re not the minority. If Cal was the coach for any other team, he’d be mocked and ridiculed on here endlessly about his antics. It’s not a good look. Never has been, but winning helps and when it’s “your own” you tend to overlook a lot.

Not that it matters but who was it that refused to go into the game a few years ago. I feel like it may have been against WVU out in Vegas. This situation made me remember that one but I cant remember who it was.

This is funny because Rick Barnes is notorious for doing that. It drove my Texas friends nuts when he was there. One mistake and you we’re gone.

I will guaran’damn’tee you there’s a girl friend issue at the root of this. Young 20ish girls are experts at the ‘pay attention to me’ & creating
turmoil in a young mans life of SHES not the total focus of his attention.
In high school coach had a policy of no girlfriends during the season. You could obviously tell the guys that complied (played the best and produced) and who didnt( never had their heads in the game and rarely produced) At their age girlfriends can be a MASSIVE hindrance to their game and focus.

I've noticed this for almost 3 weeks now. It's almost like everytime Hagans messes up, Cal takes his frustration out on Maxey. Cal knows Hagans is mentally soft and has tiptoed around him likely bc he was concerned with Hagans shutting down and becoming a headcase this close to the tournament.
Nothing new about this - Pitino used to yell at Pelphrey when virtually anyone else messed up, because he knew JP could take it and most others on that team could not. It's no secret Cal stays on Maxey - there's always one, it was Townes on the '15 team. He knows these guys, knows who can take it or not. Is Hagans so soft that it's not just a matter of how you can be coached but actually impacts on the court results. Don't know. Didn't have reason to wonder about that until now.

Now that this story has been pretty much confirmed, I truly cannot believe Calipari is going to let him get away with this. That is a big problem.

Cassius Winston and Izzo have gotten into on a few occasions this year, most recently in their win last night.

It's called competitiveness. Hagans gives a damn.
He may give a damn, but it don’t show on the floor because he plays either too selfish or too stupidly, one or the other.

I want to see the video. Apparently it was taken by a fan or someone close to the bench? And you can hear hagans tell cal he’s not going back in.

I could hear Cal screaming at them from the tv while they were trying to run their offense. Shut up and let them play that has got to be distracting
That's what coaches do...we were playing like shit...was calipari supposed to play patty cake with em? Also, if our crowds weren't so pitiful and actually made noise you wouldnt be able to hear Cal.

Exactly. We live and die with Hagans running the point. You dance with the one you brought to the Dance.

Anyone else that thinks differently is kidding themselves.
Agreed. Whatever happens rest of the way, happens with Hagans at point. There is no other option, unless he leaves the team. With no bench, this is the pickle you find yourself in.

Sorry, some of us are in the dark. Who is the source of mentioning a video of Cal & AH? I know there’s one of AH & Nick. I know some eyewitnesses reported what happened. I don’t have all the details so trying to piece together where things are coming from. Thanks!

If you can't shoot the ball, you shouldn't be recruited in the first place. IMO, Hagans is Jealous that Maxey, Quickley and Richards continue to improve and he hasn't. Hell Hagans is 21 years, he's not a baby.

Here's something to consider for the fans who get upset when Calipari yells at players.

Imagine you are coaching a group you've been around since June. Now imagine how many times you've gone over things in terms of system, approach to scenarios/situational basketball, "rules" as it pertains to game situations/philosophy......now imagine you are in your 30th game and guys are breaking off doing what they want and not listening. What do you do?

To get the best out of a team and individual player, you need to hold them accountable for their actions. Some things mean less then others, but with the limited depth on this team, you can't take everyone out, and you need to emphasize certain things for each player--so with Juzang it's leaving the ball side corner-which he's done several times and obviously doesn't get it.

Now we call have issues with certain things with any coach/player, but as a Coach when guys don't listen or do what they are told, you can either eat it and be silent and stew about in private or you can light them up and fix it. I've been in huddles where our HC not only told the team we're picking up full court man in a game situation but asked each player in the huddle what we were asking them to do and if they understood and they responded they did. Then break the huddle and all 5 guys went to the frontcourt and we had to scream to pick them up. We have a good team too, not like they are bad guys or dumb people, but sometimes things just get routine in habit and part of that is what takes place at practices which none of us are privy to know.

MJ mentioned it on the show today.

Caller saying Ashton refused to go back into the game when Cal called him up and they were going back and forth for 3 minutes arguing. Hagans told Cal "why am I going in? For you to take me out?"

Kid is just awful and doesn't even know it. That's the worst part.

You don’t think Quickley is better than a freshman Doron Lamb?

IQ, Richards, EJ, Hagans, Juzang, Brooks, and Sestina are a fine supporting cast to surround Maxey with, if he was the scoring PG ala Brandon Knight.

Actually, no I don't think Quickley is as good as lamb was either year. Do you happen to know who the career leader in 3-point percentage is?? Lamb, and he shot near identical percentages both years he played, and he hardly ever had a 8-9 game, or a 1-9 game. He shot almost 50% of his shots because that's what he made almost game in game out. He was the best, and most consistent shooter we have ever had, plus dude was a lights out defender, which he doesn't get enough credit for. He left UK and became disengage in his work ethic for basketball, which is the reason he isn't in the NBA today. But at UK, he was really good.

And those guys are good enough to win, but I just don't believe they are good enough to go to the Final Four playing that way. Everybody but Maxey struggles to score without help, and Maxey like Knight, isn't much of a helper, as in doesn't do a great job of creating for others. And let's also not lose sight of the fact that we have one regular season game left to change how we do things, versus Knight honing that style for 5 months. And that Knight team wasn't great until the tournaments began.

The time to have done that would have been in November so you have time for everybody to get used to playing like that. I just believe it would be a disaster trying to do that at this point in the season. And again, I don't believe that Maxey is on Knight's level.

Lots of tangents in this thread. The point here is Hagans, where his head is and where he goes from here. Because where he goes determines how far we go. All the talk of benching or kicking him off - and maybe it comes to that but I doubt it - is nonsense. He frustrates me like crazy, but we're not getting rid of one of our primary players on March 4 and going anywhere.

Calipari yelling at players, which he's done for 30 years, is beside the point, as is whether he coaches like Joe B in 1983 (even though he wins more than anyone 2010-2020)......

no...he does it in other games just fine. Yesterday was clearly different. It was relentless screaming. Crowd had nothing to do with why I could hear it

I lost you when you said Doron Lamb was a “lights out defender”.

I think Maxey with the ball in his hands more is exactly what’s bothering Hagans, but who knows. See ya Saturday. Waste of time to pound the keyboard over stuff you have no control over.

Could be as simple as a phosporous and/or a potassium deficiency

Spend as much time together as thenteam and coaches do, bound to have some 'motions bubble up

Thanks, now I know how much you know about basketball, and thus I will refrain from replying anymore. I thought I was talking to someone who knew something about the game. Has Richie gotten in yet?

He turns 21 in a couple months. He’s a man who should know better. Not some “kid” out there. Quit trying to soften it and make excuses for him.

We're (mostly) adults posting solutions on message boards, so there's a lot of "should know better" to go around. It's really the human condition that we do things that someone outside the situation would see and say, "Why'd he do that?"

Doron Lamb defensive win shares: 1.2

Malik Monk and Jamal Murray: 1.9 and 1.8

Lamb was a much worse defender than Monk and Murray.

Who knows basketball again?

"Baby Boomers,' are defined as being anyone born between 1946 and 1964. Millennial are defined as being born between 1981 and 1996.

So, clearly there were baby boomers who have millennial children.

Regardless, generation shaming is silly, especially considering that these generations are 20 some odd years long and someone born in the 40s will have an entirely different life experience than someone growing up in the 60s. Hell, I have a brother who is 7 years my junior and his life experience growing up was entirely different than mine.

...shaming... aww. And theyre so SENSITIVE.
Gotta have thicker skin on a mesage board if not life in general.

I'm here for fun, not for counseling or to counsel. I like "poking the bear," even if it's all cute and cuddly and a little wet behind the ears. (Millenials can look up those expressions, if they're not familiar.)
