High school recruiting is its own industry unmoored to winning CBB games. College coaches who might not be able to draw up an out-of-bounds play can become hot commodities demanding big $$$ based on how many “5-stars” they can convince to come to the school they’re coaching at, regardless of how that player performs once he arrives. In a chicken-and-the-egg scenario with that you have fans that become excited by the recruiting ranking of their school’s latest class of high schoolers, the hype machine gets in gear and the donations, ticket sales, and merchandise, etc. starts flowing in anticipation. The team is a disappointment to those fans because the thought was “just ship us the title,” but through amnesia or inability to correlate cause and effect, the fans convince themselves the next super class is the one. So, out goes the recruiters again to battle, and rinse and repeat over and over.
