IF, the Big Ten pays out more than the SEC, why not make the switch.

I’m 59 years old, and have spent decades watching us shorted on penalties, like the B. Brown knockdown that cost us 15 yards.

What the Heck, it’s all about the money, so why not be the Southern most Big Ten School?

I guess the extra money would be nice, but honestly it would be the same there as here - Ohio State, Michigan, etc. would just replace Bama, et al.

I don't watch any Big Ten games, so I could wrong. That said, the SEC has got to be the worst conference for officiating, football and basketball.

I believed for years we were a better fit in the B1G. Been told that was crazy.

UK is a founding member of the SEC, I doubt they’d ever consider leaving
We damn near left because of segregation . . . it came down to a close vote with 7 schools voting that they would play Kentucky if they played an African American football player. Another vote or two and we could not have formed a schedule in ‘66-67 and we were headed North.

Do you seriously think a southern state where most of the people are ancestrally related to Virginia, north Carolina, and tenneessee. Would fit in well in the big ten?

The “etc.” is much weaker than it is in the SEC.

If Georgia and Bama are equal or better than Ohio State and Michigan, where does that leave the “etc?”

Penn State, Wisconsin, Iowa, compared to UT, Florida, LSU, Auburn . . . . the SEC “etc.” teams all have National Titles in the BCS/Playoffs era.

are you seriously considering that as a reason for any relevance today? That was about basic human decency and not at all in the same conversation

Better than Mizzou fits into the SEC or USC and Oregon (or whoever they are bringing in).

Missouri is in the SEC because of money. When the southern states called to form a athletic conference in the early 1900s, Kentucky was one of the first states called.

I was responding to a factual allegation that was incorrect: that Kentucky would never consider leaving the SEC.

They strongly considered it, and very narrowly remained.

Even if we were willing to consider leaving the SEC, which I doubt, the Big 10 reportedly only wants members of the AAU (an academically prestigious association of colleges, not the travel sports organization) of which we aren’t a member. I don’t think this is something that would ever happen.

TH I like a lot of your post but I must disagree with this one. If UK is going to try and play football at least play in the best conference.

The Big Ten is just a tad below the SEC, but just a tad more profitable.

I would love to see what our recruiting of the mid-west could be if we promised better weather, etc. than any conference opponent. And the old SEC “basketball”
school diss of Kentucky would have little punch recruiting against Big Ten schools; half of them fancy themselves “basketball schools.”

And my same response stands. UK almost left due to a civil rights issue where they were taking a stance against racism. That is not on the same level as will they leave because we suck or could make more money. It doesn’t belong as a counter point … sorry

I've been for this for yrs. The SEC will protect its football teams, but UK seems to get the short end in basketball a lot.

No way, we're Southern. I didn't like it when we added those goobers north of the Ohio.

UK gets the short end of the stick in basketball because the SEC has tried to build their brand in that sport. Historically, the SEC has sucked in basketball.

The last 5-6 years I would say Kentucky could have competed for 1-3 in the ACC in football, would rather see a move to that, and much better basketball conference as well, but they will never leave the SEC.

Big 10 absolutely favors Ohio state and Michigan, but not much difference between schools 3-14 where the sec will protect 1-10 at the expense of 11-14 every time.

Not to mention Kentucky gets routinely shafted on scheduling in both sports. They are the bigger draw in basketball so get the tough games, historically trash in football so used as a pad for top programs when schedule needs to be changed or made.

There is no doubt Kentucky would be better off outside of the SEC, or if they had an athletic director that would bring up these issues.

I really like being in the SEC. Great sports league. In the last 30 years the SEC has more national championships than the BIG 10 in football, basketball, baseball, track, golf, and tennis.

Yes, all the schools in the BIG 10 are AAU members EXCEPT Nebraska. They also would make an exception for non-AAU Notre Dame.

I think you might have missed my overall point. OSU and Michigan would be on the level of "prestige" in their conference like Bama is in the SEC (meaning, they get the breaks/benefit of the doubt, and other perks that fellow league schools don't seem to get). Other schools like Penn State, Wisconsin, Iowa, and maybe Michigan State would also be considered "traditional" football schools and deserving of more of the "benefit of the doubt" in officiating, scheduling, and so forth like Auburn, Tennessee, Mississippi, Florida do in the SEC compared to us.

I'm not saying the Big Ten is the football equal of the SEC, just that the dynamic would likely be similar - we'd be the new guy/interloper and treated as such.

And we'd get bad treatment from the other schools fanbases for being a southern school.

I’m afraid that we have always been the interloper in the SEC.

Ask folks from Bama and Mississippi if we are Southern. They laugh and cite the Civil War, still.

And all of my relatives live in Southern States.

I’m about as traditionally Southern as it gets in Kentucky.

Kentucky would be a perfect fit in the BIG 10 and athlete wise most years only be behind Ohio State in Football. Basketball would be a great fit IMO. Will it ever happen doubtful but who would think USC and UCLA are going to the BIG 10.

Then I think we agree. My overall point was that we'd be treated much the same in the Big Ten as we are here. Now, if the extra money is enough to make it worth it, then...

Nothing wrong with floating the idea, but I’ll pass on the Big Ten. Boring brand of football.

YES. That is why KY is/was the winningest school for so many years, but people do not want to admit it. For decades, we dominated the SEC in basketball because the vast majority of schools simply were not really interested in the sport.

People from Bama and Mississippi think the south is bama, miss, Louisiana, Georgia and South Carolina. Not sure their opinion has any merit on whether Kentucky is southern or not. If anyone wants to talk about the civil war. The middle star on the confederate flag is Kentucky's...
