A look ahead at the Kansas game this weekend

Kansas is looking terrible lately, you guys might actually pull this off.

But make no mistake, just because like 5 of us post over here doesn't make this a Superbowl. Give me a break.

The key to our chances of winning this game is Poythess and Lee staying out of foul trouble and that probable isn't going to happen.

Our guard play is key and will be key all yr.
Why? Because we start three and they are all very good at what they do.
Best three guard tandem in the country.

Sure it is. UK being in town is the most exciting thing that has happened in Lawrence since the "Who Has the Tallest Cornstalk" competition.

Kansas lost to ISU because they were preparing for the Sarurday game instead. This is the price you pay to enact revenge for what happened last year. It's a small sacrifice to reap a much bigger reward. Trust me, Self has been practicing and game plannng for us for a full week. It's on.

Cheick Diallo and Hunter Mickelson has been cut from the rotation (per Bill Self).

Emperor of the Big XII decided that he doesn't want shot blockers playing any minutes. Frankly, I'm glad for our sake (but saddened for those two, especially Diallo, who more than deserves the minutes).

I'll be very surprised as well as dissapointed if we aren't in it until the end. I won't be upset , win or lose, unless we get beat handily.

Cut the crap. You guys want this one as bad as any regular season game in awhile.

I never understood the notion of insulting a competitor by accusing them of wanting to win badly. Shouldn't the team that wants it more, win? It doesn't comfort me when we say that we were Auburn's superbowl. It just makes me wonder why OUR guys weren't up for it as much. Sure UK fans want to win. KU is a top program and a long time rival. I still remember 150-95. I want UK to win Saturday just like I wanted them to beat UL or Duke pretty much on the same level which is really badly with a little extra thrown in for the history between the program. I think our guys will come out and play hard. It is nice to be the underdog for a change.

If the Zebras give UK a fair shake I like our chances.

That however is a BiG IF....
Not taking anything away from Kansas. They are a good basketball team, deserving of a high ranking. But the entire Big 12 is overrated, and I also think Kansas is a little bit overrated. Their guards are not very physical, and their bigs aside from Ellis have been underachievers. The intangibles in this game certainly favor Kansas. The best thing Kansas has going for them is that Allen Fieldhouse is 1 of the toughest places in the country for a visiting team to play. Also, Kansas will have a chip on their shoulders because we blew them out last year. Kansas has more depth than we do. But Kansas will have their hands full with Murray and Ulis. If we get a strong game from Poythress and our guards, and if we win the turnover battle, we can be competitive. Obviously, in order to win, we would have to play our best game of the year.

Blue Decade, year in and year out the B-12 is overrated, but this year I think there are more truly good teams than usual. I think it's likely someone else finally wins the conference this year, and Oklahoma is clearly better than Kansas. They were robbed when they played there, and I look for them to easily when when KU goes there.

Sheww. That place will be praying for Blue Blood to spill come Saturday. Would be the greatest reg season win of Cals tenure at Uk if he pulled that off.
I want to argue this but there isn't a specific regular season game that stands out. UNC at Rupp with the title team was pretty special. And last year demolishing KU and UCLA by a billion combined points was pretty impressive. But none of those were on the road at an extremely tough place to win like Allen Fieldhouse.

I'd probably still go with the 2011 UNC game just because that was basically the top 2 teams of that season (when fully healthy) going at it.

Could have a Skal uprising in this game and Matthews might give us some solid minutes as well. The speed of the game and match-up might be favorable for them.

The KU game will be the first in 62 games (active NCAA record) that UK will be the underdog.

Pretty incredible. Let's see how the Cats respond!

It'll feel kinda weird being favored in our "super bowl"

there is always a favorite in a super bowl. What part of biggest game of the year do you not understand? There was no other game scheduled on your schedule that KU wanted to win more than this UK game. I imagine our biggest game was Duke since they were defending national champs.

Going to be a long game if Poy & Lee get into foul trouble.
No, the game will still 40 minutes long, unless, of course, Bill Self's team runs out of time. If that happens I fully expect the ghost of Allen Fieldhouse will find a way to add some time on the clock.

Obviously you guys are not among those teams for who playing UK is their "superbowl", and I hate that phrase BTW, but given last year's result and the two losses in the 2012 season, I think it basically puts you guys in that group for this season.

What does "who's favored" In a single year have to do with UK being your super bowl. Your players are going to want to win this game more than any game of their season. It definitely your super bowl.

That's why you stay here.

I'm here because you guys care a lot about college basketball, like we do. There aren't many schools who care this much. Oh, and I was on the UNC board for about 10 min, asked a question they didn't like, got the boot. They are the biggest babies on the planet.

Just can't agree. We're favored, we're higher in the polls and the computers. How that can equate to "superbowl" is nonsense from our POV

Now, personally, I want to win this game more than any this year before March. Kentucky-Duke-UNC will always, no matter how good or average they are, be in that category for me.

Carolina is favored over Denver...... is that still not a super bowl for both teams? The term being someone's super bowl doesnt mean what you think it does. It simply means biggest game of the year.

Any early line on the game? I'm thinking KU -4.5.

I'm thinking the same thing. Could be KU -3.5 because they've really not played well lately. They've been having huge turnover issues, which is great news for us.

Should come out tomorrow.

Sagarin says KU by 6 and someone in another thread said Pomeroy has KU by 7. RealtimeRPI predicts a score of 85-73 for KU.

I would agree with you - line should be in the KU by 4-6 range most likely.

You can throw Pomeroy and Sargarin out the window right now because those are based on numbers from UK's entire season. It doesnt factor in that UK as of today is a completely different team than UK of 2 weeks ago.

Agreed, but what is home court worth at AFH?

Mods on the UNC boards blacklist you as soon as they find out you aren't a UNC fan. It's crazy how sensitive they are.

Ulis has exceeded my expectations. I'd take him over any other PG, Any of them. As it's shaping up this has all the makings of a very competitive, intense, high energy game. It could end up being a classic. Like the KU/OU game was. A game like this is why a lot of these guys come to both places. To play in big games against the best. I expect both teams to play well, but if KU doesn't want to I'm OK with that.

I'd also really like to see the SEC take at least 6 of these games. 3 of them are huge out of conference games. This whole B12/SEC challenge, and particular the timing of it is a great idea. Hope we hold up our end. It'd be nice to have bragging rights over supposedly the best conference this year, and KU.

Ulis is one of those players that I think would make a good coach one day! Also .... I hope the NBA guys tell him he should return another year and he takes their advice.

Great point. This weekend could go a long way in determining the success of the SEC in the Tournament this year, whether it be getting some potential bubble teams some huge wins (Vandy @ Texas, Oklahoma @ LSU, West Virginia @ Florida) or improving the seed lines of Kentucky (@KU) and Texas A&M (v. Iowa State). HUGE weekend for the SEC.

At the FInal Four 2008 after we waxed them by 18, they were all trying to check out of our hotel. (Unbeknownst to me, we had booked at a UNC hotel) They were all in their belvoed sky-blue windshirts and complaining loudly to clerks about breaking their 4-day minimum stay requirement so they could go home early. Hey, the 4-day deal : we all knew going in. But they were just crying like brats demanding their way.

It was so great watching the manager telling a large group of them to go pound sand.

I don't like either of your programs but I LOVE that KU has ended Roy Williams' seasons at UNC three times now. Has to feel good. I know it does to do the same to Pitino and Louisville twice now.

There is NO DOUBT this is the biggest game on Kansas' schedule this year. Especially now that they are floundering a bit. You have revenge from the title game still there, and definitely revenge for the blowout last year. This is a team that really needs and wants this win. I expect them to play one of their best games of the year. We all know that teams overlook smaller teams (Auburn), but that will not happen with KU or UK for that matter.

Also, the Big 12 is overrated this year, but so is everyone else. There really doesn't seem to be a true #1 team this year. The Big 10 has a lot of schools ranked high that aren't all that either. Oklahoma is the cream of the Big 12, but they have some serious holes like everyone else. I don't think WV is all that, and look for Kansas to lose before the sweet 16. Iowa St has some really glaring holes on both sides of the court as well.

All that said, this is the most open year in college hoops I can remember in the last 30 years or so.
