Fully aware that Kentucky plays Mizzou next, but let's talk about the one that College Gameday will be present for, and the one that everybody's eyes will be on. Will likely be the hardest game that Kentucky has had all season, especially in a place like Phog Allen Fieldhouse, and it'll be exciting to watch.
Just wanted to throw some info out, and have some discussion about the game. Leave some opinions.

Starting 5 for Kentucky:
Tyler Ulis (5'9")
Jamal Murray (6'4")
Isaiah Briscoe (6'3")
Derek Willis (6'9")
Alex Poythress (6'8")

Starting 5 for Kansas:
Frank Mason (5'11")
Devonte Graham (6'2")
Wayne Selden (6'5")
Landen Lucas (6'10")
Perry Ellis (6'8")

Over the last 5 games:

Tyler Ulis vs Frank Mason

Tyler Ulis has averaged 18.5 PPG (44.3% FG, 35.3% 3PT), 6.2 AST, 4.4 REB, 1 STL, 1.8 TO

Frank Mason has averaged 13.2 PPG (34.0% FG, 38.1% 3PT), 2.8 AST, 6.4 REB, 0.8 STL, 2.6 TO

==

Devonte Graham vs Jamal Murray

Jamal Murray has averaged 20 PPG (45% FG, 36.8% 3PT), 1.6 AST, 5 REB, 1.8 STL, 1.8 TO

Devonte Graham has averaged 9 PPG (39.5% FG, 42.1% 3PT) 4.4 AST, 2.6 REB, 0.4 STL, 1.4 TO

==

Isaiah Briscoe vs Wayne Selden
(This may be the most important match-up. Their best perimeter offensive player vs our best on-ball defender)

Isaiah Briscoe has averaged 8.4 PPG (43.5% FG, 0% 3PT [on 3 shots]), 3.4 AST, 4.6 REB, 0.6 STL, 1.6 TO

Wayne Selden has averaged 11.4 PPG (38.5%FG%, 34.5% 3PT), 1.8 AST, 2.8 REB, 0.8 STL, 3 TO

==

Alex Poythress vs Perry Ellis
(I'll always feel good about Poythress vs Ellis after what Poy did to Ellis last year, athletically, Poy is on another level, and at the same size as Ellis)

Alex Poythress has averaged 12 PPG (64.7% FG, 0% 3PT [on 3 shots]), 5.2 REB, 1 BLK, 0.4 STL

Perry Ellis has averaged 17 PPG (48.4% FG, 36.4 3PT), 6.6 REB, 1 BLK, 0.8 STL

==

Derek Willis vs Landen Lucas

Derek Willis has averaged 7.8 PPG (44.8% FG, 41.2% 3PT), 6.4 REB, 1.4 BLK, 0.8 STL

Landen Lucas has averaged 2.4 PPG (50% FG, 0% 3PT [on 0 shots]), 4.8 REB, 0.4 BLK, 0 STL

A couple of things I want to note:

I just wanted to say that Ulis has turned it up to another level recently. 20 points and 5 rebounds in 6 of the last 8 games. For reference, over the past 20 years, only 1 other PG at Kentucky has had 6 different 20 point, 5 assist games in his 4 year career. John Wall accumulated 5 such games in his 37 games here. If you're looking for a point guard who has played better basketball than Ulis as of late, you won't find him.

Also would like to say that Derek Willis' rebounding averages have come down because of the two games prior to that little chat he had with his father, which apparently turned him into the best rebounder on the team because he's attacking the basket hard on rebounds. Over the last 3 games, Willis has averaged 9.3 rebounds per game, and really, he's playing much better defense all over the floor.

As I mentioned, winning in Phog Allen Fieldhouse is one very difficult task, but I feel much more confident about the game now than I did a couple of weeks ago before Derek Willis stepped up his game and elevated our entire team as a result of his effort.

Right now, as of late, Kentucky is playing better basketball than Kansas is. Our Cats will need to apply the same kind of pressure that they've been applying out on the perimeter against the 2 best 3PT shooting teams in the SEC, and Alex Poythress will need to do what he did to Perry Ellis last year. If you take away Wayne Selden and Perry Ellis, you beat Kansas. I'm confident that we can do that because Poythress, inconsistent or not on offense, is made to defend stretch 4's like Ellis, and Briscoe will bring his usual game and contest Wayne Selden who is typically loose with the basketball (which will be dangerous for KU against our best on-ball defender).

I think the dynamic that our offense brings with Willis in the game will also be big for us. He spaces the floor, and Kansas doesn't have somebody that can defend the post well (that Bill Self will put in the game because he's a freshman). Nobody here, nor there, will ever convince me that Frank Mason, Devonte Graham, and Wayne Selden can defend Tyler Ulis, Jamal Murray, and Isaiah Briscoe off the bounce (and here lately, nobody has been able to defend Ulis or Murray, period).

Discuss. :pimp:

Keeping Alex out of foul trouble is key. He has the skill set to guard Ellis. I would like to see him attack Ellis and maybe cause Ellis to get into foul trouble. Hopefully Lee will show up ready to play. I feel very good about Ulis and Murray being able to outplay Kansas' guards.

I really think Bricoe will do a good job on Selden. We are playing more people now than Kansas. I have to think we have an advantage off the bench.

If Kansas loses tonight, they are going to be pissed when Kentucky shows up Saturday.

All you gotta do is get Ulis going and start off playing well. First sign of resistance the KU players wilt and Frank Mason will drive every play turning the ball over and taking terrible shots. Same team as last year. We'll be watching the Sweet 16 from Lawrence.

Bill Self looks like he wants to crawl under a rock.

Let me guess....now he "rallies the troops", makes them practice extra hard and finally decides to start Diallo and Bragg...all in time for UK [laughing]

The storyline is there.

Iowa state with 9 3s and Kansas with 15 turnovers. Hard to see that repeating on Saturday.

Sheww. That place will be praying for Blue Blood to spill come Saturday. Would be the greatest reg season win of Cals tenure at Uk if he pulled that off. Would love to see Our guards dominate that game. Kansas fans would be jumping off bridges.

I think if Lee and Poy can (finally) stay out of foul trouble in a road game, and Murray has a good game, we win.

Could easily go the other way though, they should still be favored at this point, even after tonight.

Kansas is going to be out for blood Saturday anyway. I'd rather them come in struggling than confident. Going to be a tough one.

It's all about the guards. Frank Mason Jr has not played well in the Kansas losses from a floor general pov. He goes to much 1 on 1 and forgets to get others involved. 8 assists and 16 turnovers in their 4 losses.

I actually, when our big men aren't in foul trouble, like them better than KU's. Although, Perry Ellis is very versatile the other bigs aren't very offensive oriented. This will hopefully help keep our bigs out of foul trouble. You don't have to try and do more than you are capable defensively. Just be patient. You don't have to try to block every shot. Just play good hard-nosed defense.

It's still going to take a monumental effort to beat them at Kansas. They still have a hell of a team. One that could cut the nets down at the end.

Glad they lost. I don't buy that losing makes them any better come Saturday. Any feeling of invincibility is over.

Here lately, it seems like they've been playing dumb basketball (turning it over a lot). Selden is a big reason for that though. Like I said, prior to tonight, he was averaging 3 turnovers per game. He's their version of Jamal Murray in the former parts of the season.
Frankly, I think there's a possibility of winning every position on the floor because of the way Kansas has played lately. Obviously my only real reservations are Selden vs Briscoe. Briscoe brings it every night on the defensive end, but you never know what you're gonna get with Selden. He could go for 25, he could go for 5.

I hope we step up and beat Kansas and I think we have a chance to pull out a win. We all expect KU to play huge (always happens as you know too well), the game's on their home floor and memories of the the total ass whipping from last year etc etc will add fuel to the fire. This will say a lot about our progress and a win would be double sweet but really hard to get.

I predict the player we have the hardest time checking Saturday is ellis. Alex might have some success but I don't know if any of our other guys will.

Conventional wisdom is you don't want to play a team at their place after they lose on the road, but Hell with it, they already had a 32-point incentive to be motivated.

If the Cats beat Mizzou the teams will have identical records. The Cats have lost to worse teams. Each team has two quality wins -- UK over Duke with Amile Jefferson and Louisville and KU with home wins over Oklahoma and Baylor.

In the end, Kansas at home is the huge advantage that will be tough to overcome.

Their plan will be to get Ulis and our bigs in foul trouble. They'll have no trouble doing that at AF.

Amen to that! Weird tho that they'll be favored in their super bowl.

What does "who's favored" In a single year have to do with UK being your super bowl. Your players are going to want to win this game more than any game of their season. It definitely your super bowl.

That's why you stay here.

Ellis seems to struggle against us lately. I think the mental edge goes to UK with reference to Ellis' game. He got blocked and basically embarrassed the last couple times we played them. If Poythress and Lee can keep that going then it should be a great thing for us. Our guards are better and should take care of business. That being said, shots have to fall. Our 3 point defense was stellar against Vandy so that bodes well for this game. I can't really see Lucas, Traylor, or Diallo beating us. Our 3 guards are better than theirs.

They should have all the motivation in the world to beat us, and might do it, but I think this game is more pressure on them than us. We play great, we win. We play good, we probably lose a close one. We play bad, we lose by 10+.

Funny thing is, if you read their board after the loss last night, most of us are more confident they will win Saturday than many of their own fans. [laughing]

Unfortunately, KU comes to play Saturday, IMO. They have had this game circled a loooooong time. Hope I'm wrong.

It's just weird that a team would be favored in their "super bowl", thats all. Admit that you also sorta laughed at that.

Our super bowl this season was already played 3 mondays ago vs who is possibly the best team in the Nation.

Not to mention the +20-something-page thread that stayed on the front page of their Scout forum about the UK game.............started last May, continuing all the way through the middle of last month..

@JayCatz44 if our players can get their legs under them and be able to run up and down in transition they should be able to avoid the foul trouble.

KU is horrible in the front court besides Ellis . Stop him and win . Can't believe how little Bragg and Diallo get run and its not like they have better guys besides Ellis in front of them. Lucas and Traylor are not good players.

***Hey...don't think that KU fans haven't been saying the SAME THING!!! :) That Bragg & Diallo should be playing more.....heck, even the Arkansas transfer, Mickelson has been far better than Traylor & Lucas and yet over the last 6 games or so pretty much sees no time (0 mins. both of the last 2 games).

Much like the rest of the team, Selden hasn't been the same since the OU 3 Overtime game.

Averaging nearly 16 pts./gm. over his first 14 gms., Selden's only averaged 11.3 over his last 6. He was also at a .552 FG% clip those first 14 gms. compared to a .387 FG% clip over his last 6.

The key to our chances of winning this game is Poythess and Lee staying out of foul trouble and that probable isn't going to happen.
