63 year old coach can't handle his irrelevance, attacks successful program & coach

Cal took UMass to a final four and Memphis to a title game. Those schools have been awful since he left and were terrible before he got there.

Cal has struggled of late by UK’s standards, but the basketball team is held to a much, much higher standard than the football team. For obvious reasons.

I think Stoops is doing a good job. Him getting UK football to this point is impressive but calling him successful and Cal a failed coach is absurd.

-with generational talents in Marcus Camby and Derek Rose. He's an amazing recruiter.

UMass & Memphis final 4? Huh? I checked the official record books, and those never happened. Doesn't exist.

Still amazing that this hissy fit is because the basketball coach wants a new practice facility to replace the one built in 2009. And demands it be done before football gets IMPROVEMENTS to a facility built in 1989.

Want to know why Stoops was so quick to be pissed off? Go back to this Spring press conferences and listen again how infuriated he was to be the only P5 coach who didn't have a full 100 yd indoor setup. Now 6 months later this part timer loudmouth tries to cut in line.

We are 9th in total sports this year, and that 1st round loss to St. Whatever cost us.

Stoops is winning far more than any predecessor not nick-named “Bear,” and Cal is winning at about the average program rate.

Just as a reminder folks it's fine to criticize and render your opinions strong as they may be on this topic but it's not OK to use disparaging language, especially profanity, to describe a coach, player or staff member.

What a pathetic small sorry sack of crap.

Saying that on a lavish trip to Bahamas. Cal only wishes he could be as admired and beloved as Mark Stoops. Cal only dreams he could build something never done before as Stoops has done.

#FootballSchool
#TeamStoops

The wanker should pay for it out of his own fkn salary from the last few bullsht years he's mailed it in on the job and demeaned UK fans in the process. What a fkn narcissistic dbag..... He's so full of himself he probably tries to sell his own feces on Ebay. Of course, I'm talking about Mark Emmert

MAYBE football was paying a glory hound's bills before he won a title and still probably funds a bit of his recruiting budget even now. Might should stay in his fkn lane before his mouth gets a boot shoved in it (again, I'm not talking about Cal specifically, though the similarities may seem to be there)

if you simply base it off the proportion of fan attendance/support through the years vs level of success, there is no question football wins that comparison easily. Drawing 40K to 50K though year after year of losing season and taking thousands on the road too.

Kentucky has always wanted to win in football as much or more than they have in basketball. It's just that no one outside of KY ever knew it. 50K people don't sit in the stands in some pretty miserable conditions only to watch their team lose if they don't want them to eventually win.

No need for Cal to say it but he’s right. Kentucky is a basketball school with a vastly improving football program. Go back to 77, and compare both programs history and tell me it’s not
I agree with this, but Cal had no business saying it making it appear that there is discourse at the AD level, which there may be, but UK Basketball is not competing against UK Football. I'm a UK fan and cheer for everything about the University.

Cal should concentrate on trying to find a way to beat mid-majors in March. If one had to go between Cal and Stoops, then show Cal the door.
Agree how many good basketvall coaches we had ? Now how many good fb coaches not even close ...we were a graveyard of coaching for fb for the longest time!

I think this dust-up reveals a couple of things.

First, the boys from Youngstown are NOT going to take crap (real or percieved) from anyone, anytime. If you think they should have waited to check w/the administration before responding, you haven't met Stoops and the Big Dog. These qualities are part of why their popularity is soaring and why they have built a program that we are all very proud to call our own.

Second, Cal made a mistake. It happens. But, I think a lot of us have had the opinion that after last year's embarrasment that Cal should try to hush as much as possible - coming off all-time failures over the last couple of years is not the time to dazzle us with your wizardry. But, alas, The Bahamas and seeing what appears to be a really good team on the floor was too much for Cal to pass up. So, he made an unforced, social media error. The kind of error that Cal would never have made when he was on top.

Go CATS!

Haven’t watched a basketball game in two or three years. Not interested. Basketball players are here a few months and gone. One and done. It’s not exciting the way it was in the 80’s and 90’s. But I NEVER miss a Kentucky football 🏈 game. Nothing in sports compares to an SEC football 🏈 game or game day atmosphere. Just my opinion.

It'll hurt him and UK, not that he cares, because his immaturity isn't the sign of the kind of leader young men need. His criticism of the fans, and now putting his foot in his mouth with this makes him look like childish.

"Here's the thing you've got to understand"
He has himself to blame for all that he's lost over the years. He turned a destination basketball program into a stepping stone program and made excuses for every mistake, every failure to act and failure to coach up his team. He worked to divide the fans last year with disparaging comments, then his aspersion casting send off last season ("don't blame these kids" - as if any of us thought it was them and not him) was a total dk move. All from a man who's mostly powerless against any mentioning zone defense out loud. He's turned more shooters cold than Doc Holliday and Wyatt Earp.

I'd like the mouth to focus on him and making his players better. I'd like him to take every game seriously. I'd like him to do his job at a level worthy of that mouth plus 8M per year.

Football will always Bring in more money then Basketball ! Stoops recruits tough men who represent the University of Kentucky Cal recruits boys that Represents themselfs

Absolutely silly response. You don't think Stoops did what he did without generational players like Josh Allen? How do you even get generational talent to go to a school like UMASS was back then? I get it, Cal made a stupid comment. However pretending that he isn't a great coach and hasn't accomplished some incredible things is childish. I like Mark Stoops but he really isn't in the same conversation that Cal is right now. Cal has taken 3 teams to a final 4 and won a title.

I understand being upset with Cal, can't believe he made the comment. While he may not win as much as fans want, he has not turned UK into a stepping stone program, easily a top 5 program and it can be argued for any one of the 5 spots.

-false.

-like i said...cal is a great recruiter. He gets great players.

-that said: He's done "less with more" at UK, indisputable...over the last 5-7 years.

This is exactly where I sit. Good luck convincing me we need Cal more than he needs us. There's a host of basketball coaches that could succeed at UK. "Hey, young man, want to manage the Yankees? OK, drop what you're doing..."

Contrasting what Saban has done @ Bama, he sure has. He's said it himself. It's about the draft and getting kids into it.

If he was a team player, which we all know he isn't, he wouldn't be "hoping they win 10 games" and go to bowl games. He'd be behind the team getting an SEC and National title. He's just not. He's been less and less about making appearances at football games and showing any kind of support there, but it's not surprising. Everything is always about him, even when he's saying it isn't. If you've ever had a conversation with him, you'd see it.

What did Cal do before the last 5-7 years? He’s a hall of fame coach for a reason. He hasn’t lived up to the incredibly high standards he got us accustomed to recently but that doesn’t mean he’s not had a successful career.

Stoops has performed better compared to expectations than Cal, but that doesn’t mean he’s more successful. He needs to win the SEC East at least in order to have any argument.

I don’t think Cal should’ve made the statement and Stoops is right to be upset, but to say Cal is a failed coach is ridiculous.

^he didn't get us used to "incredibly high standards". UK was the gold standard before he was here...and will be long after he is gone, he is simply a placeholder. Some of yall need to stop drinking the cal kool-aid.

-5-7 years is a lifetime in college athletics.

-Expectations have to be taken into consideration...bb program has received *unparalleled* support, that support has to be factored in to the "success" equation. He has absolutely underperformed since 15. It is indisputable.

Until we can win at least the sec east in Football he is correct, a bowl win in my mind is about as good as making the NCAA tournament.
That said I love both programs, I am just glad we have coaches fighting for success.

Cal is starting to have that tubby feel. Win a title early then on the back end look for things to explain the underperformance that have nothing to do with you like needing facilities. Maybe he gets his mojo back with the assistants he hired but it also goes to make you ask if that was the fix then why did that drag so long? Whether he likes it or not the fan base respects stoops more than him both in what he has achieved relative to resource and how he goes about his business. I think he senses that from the ad office but I’m not sure he realizes the fans have moved that direction too.

He was paid. We know that now.

Also josh Allen and Marcus camby are two totally different examples. One was clearly a 7 foot generational talent. The other was a 2 star wide receiver turned defensive player that virtually noone wanted.

Sorry, l know I'm late to the thread....

So what exactly is wrong with the Joe Craft Center that has Cal's jimmies rustled? I can't see how Men's BB has suddenly fallen so far behind that a new practice facility is already needed.

Hopefully everyone's egos get smoothed over..... Cal needs to learn that he doesn't always eat first, to paraphrase one of his classic sayings.

Lmao. Oh the offended population of 2022

A. That wasn't an attack

B. He's right. We're THE basketball school.

C. If hes a failure what's Stoops?

D. Chill out man. Get off the internet for a bit. Not everything has to offend.

E. I want football to win more than basketball. But this isn't a big deal. Will actually help football publicity(already one of the busiest threads on the football board when we have a team that can compete for the east) and they're probably texting back and forth laughing about it.
