Francis Scott Key Bridge Collapse

I saw where Biden was saying the government would pay to rebuild bridge.... Shouldn't the company that owned the ship and the co that had it leased use their insurance to pay for the bridge? I know those co's have insurance soooo....

Don't think some shipping company is paying premiums for a billion dollar umbrella policy.

IDK.... I mean they are the largest shipping co in the world. You'd think they'd go for as much from them as possible. BP had to come up with $21 billion for the gulf spill.

Looks like the co that owned the boat has been sued in federal court 4+ times for safety violations. Captain was Ukrainian and navigator was Indian. Same boat appears to have been cited for mechanical issues in Japan and at the Panama Canal.

Saw a theory that the reason the ship steered so quickly toward the pillar was because they tried to stop by dropping anchor. The anchor could have been why the quick change of direction happened. Damn, if that is what caused it.... bad luck on bad luck.

I do a lot of work in the blue and brown water maritime industry. I was with a guy who designs and builds ships today. Take this for what it's worth, but this is what he said:
  1. These are very sophisticated ships; they don't just "lose power"
  2. They have redundant systems and can even operate on battery power for a period of time.
  3. The odds of all power going out and then steering into a bridge seems very suspect.
He's not suggesting any conspiracy theory; but he does think that given the full outage at the exact time it's going towards a bridge shows that it's likely this was hacked.

Govt needs to rebuild ASAP. But then sue the ish out of the Company to get the money back. But Biden is correct, cannot wait for years of litigation to start the repairs.

I can be open to the ship being hacked somehow - but there are plenty of people who think the government blew the bridge up and sent the ship in to cover it up. If anyone really thinks that's within the realm of probability, why live here if your philosophy is that the government is murdering American civilians? Might as well move to Gaza if that's the case, right?

Who and where are these people??

Not even looking for it, my feeds were ripe today with videos reminiscent of the 9/11 film flam. And hundreds of right wing nuts agreeing/sharing/liking them. It’s like an army of Rush Limbaughs spreading misinformation and outright lies, just like their hero.

We used to drive down to SW Florida for vacation. The mouth of Tampa Bay was spanned by The Sunshine Skyway bridge. It rose steeply and you could not see anything of the other side of the bridge until you reached the crest. I imagine that's true of any bridge that's arched like that. We always felt a little twinge of fear while crossing it that the center span wasn't going to be there. And one day that came true. A ship hit one of the supports and took out the center span and several cars fell into Tampa Bay.

Wtf are you even talking about?

I saw one video where they slowed it down and everyone (except for the few sane people who dared to question them) was saying you can see charges going off right before the ship hit. It was a setup by the government to impact the supply chain. Right wingers are hilarious.

Nah. I have a childhood friend who actually drives these type of ships out of Florida, he's had several media requests to speak on it since it happened. Here's what he told me:

Definitely two pilots on board through the whole thing. Had a total blackout at 0125. Emergency generator kicked on you can see the smoke. And lights come back on. Never got the engine back. Blacked out again dropped anchor and tried to steer it out of the channel. Hit the bridge at 0128. That’s straight from the source
Pilot most likely saved lives by calling for the bridge to get shut down and try and run it out of the channel in less than three minutes.

Just shit timing and place for it to have happened. They were handicapped without propulsion you lose steering very quickly.

Just to give an idea of the size of that ship. It could carry 13k TEU which if you lined up this containers on a train it would stretch 49 miles long.

I’ve had this happen twice now. Luckily only ran an anchor over but never went aground. Second time was coming out of port manatee headed toward the skyway. Tugs were still close and able to chase me down get made up and escort me through the bridge.

Crazy part is if that happened two minutes later he steers through the bridge and it never hits the news.

All of these ships are now being made to run on a different grade of fuel, have engine limiters, and scrubbers. In layman’s terms safety is being sacrificed for going green

All bridges have messed with my head since the last two huge earthquakes in California and seeing footage of those bridges and stacked highways pancaking.
Had those same thoughts going across the Golden Gate and other large bridges, but the creepiest of all is the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel, just thinking what a horrible way to die that would be. We were walking our dog around the downtown marina here one evening when we thought it was so nice out, we'd take him across the South Causeway bridge on A1A. We had barely gotten to the crest and the bridge was vibrating/shaking so bad that it freaked the dog out and he wouldn't go another step, so we had to turn back, and he didn't get any argument from us. That was a little unnerving.

Who said that? LOL.

Yep. I've never worried about driving over them and something happening but I can't stand being stuck in traffic underneath bridges.

As investigators work to determine what caused the hulking Dali container ship to topple Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key bridge in a matter of seconds on Tuesday, maritime experts around the country are pointing to what could have stopped it.

Tugboats.

These small but mighty vessels tow and push ever-larger ships through channels and help them where their own propulsion systems – or lack thereof – cannot. They are standard equipment in ports worldwide and especially useful to help ships with docking and undocking.

On Tuesday, a pair of tugboats operated by McAllister Towing and Transportation did just that, helping the Dali unmoor itself from the main terminal at the Port of Baltimore and orient the ship toward the open waters.

I wonder if they were supposed to stay with the boat all the way through the bridge or just get it turned around? You're talking about 3 or 4 minutes of extra work for the tugs to get the boat past the bridge. Ugh.

Tugs are used to position a ship from the dock to an open body of water that it can navigate on its own. I have to believe that's what they did. From everything I have heard there was no time to redispatch tugs. Another possibility was dropping anchor in attempt to slow or stop forward momentum but again time did not permit that from the reports I have heard or read.

Did my post calling out Stan’s conspiracy theory posts get axed or did I simply forget to post it? Both are plausible.

Deeeee, if you’re going to axe that kind of stuff axe his earlier posts too, may as well go the distance….

Heard naval expert on a podcast today discuss that…..

1. Wind + tall flat containers, that thing was a giant sail.

2. The anchor from the time dropped would have taken a bit of time (when seconds matter) to drop 50’ to the bottom

3. Bottom was a dredged channel, mostly mud, nothing to really grab.

4. The anchor is made to anchor a ship that is not intending to move, not stop a runaway container ship that is moving….was no chance that would stop the collision

There were some totally off topic posts and some political posts that were removed - yours may have been among them. May have missed some. Feel free to use the report feature.

Seen some reports that they don't build bridges like that anymore. Sunshune Skyway was built similarly...and something similar happened.

So...yeah, apparently a lot they can do going forward. Why they didn't do anything proactively is Monday morning quarterbacking.
1980. Now hitting the current Sunshine Skyway..that would be a feat.
