Only 6 in 5 games so far. This is unacceptable. Some of it is on the dline, some of it is the lack of cahonas by the staff

Agree with both takes. Rushing 3 DL with 1 LB is just conceding we're not going to get any pressure on the QB. Overall, the D is playing pretty well. But, we've got to figure out a scheme to get some pressure without blitzing everyone and taking a huge chance. Dart had a lot of time to throw today.

Missed the Dream Weaver!
Supposedly back for South Carolina.
Was that Jones writhing in pain on the Rebels sideline late?

We were missing one of our best defenders (Weaver)

we had a huge INT (and dropped 2 others)

we didn’t give up a TD after the first quarter.

we played the game we needed to play on defense to win the game

Our special teams sabotaged us and our offense blew it at the end.
Yep inside the 20 twice in the last couple minutes down 3 and came away empty both times.
Helluva football game though.
This team has big time heart.

Been saying it all year. Defense does not pressure the QB at all. No edge rushers that scare teams.
I have personally heard Josh Allen giving Brad White credit for developing his pass rushing development. However, imo Boogie Watson, Jordan Wright, and JJ Weaver have all been disappointing as far as rushing the passer goes . What the heck ?

Agree. White has been good. No issues as far as his coaching. Just doesn't have the horses in certain spots.

I watch a lot of CFB every week. I see a lot of teams, in obvious passing situations, have what looks like a 'rush' personnel group. Very few 290 lb guys trying to rush the passer. Instead it looks like a bunch of LBers and free safeties. UK generally has at least 2 DL and oftentimes 3 DL rushing with one LB. If it's not working, why continue to do it?

We typically don't try to sack running quarterbacks unless it's from straight up the middle. The edge guys try to hold the edge and make the quarterback run where there is the most help. Agree we are not getting much pressure this year but I didn't't expect much today or the UF game.

True but we still had no sacks and no pressure on their qb

1. Weaver is our only edge rush threat. Jordan wright isn’t an edge rush threat
2. I get the three DL on run downs. But we aren’t subbing a DL off the field on pass downs and bring lung extra edge rusher

I agree we need to generate more pressure and taking a big Dl off field needs to happen

Thought Trevin Wallace would make a lot of noise this season. He was basically the best all around football player/athlete in the state of GA coming out of high school. Everyone wanted him. Injuries at LB have provided him some time to play but haven’t heard his name called much.

Are you kidding me it's completely on the coaching staff. You had Josh Allen. He led the country in sacks. He went number #6 n draft.

You're telling me you didn't recruit guys that can sack the quarterback off of that?

Then whoever recruits defensive ends needs to be fired.

If losing one player like JJ Weaver completely keeps us from being able to sack the quarterback then y'all have done the community us disservice by not recruiting the right type of players when you had the number six guy in the draft to draft off of!!!

We should have at least three guys on the sideline that can sack the quarterback with his eyes closed when you get that kind of guy. Josh Allen has brought us nothing. We haven't had anybody even close to him. That's a 100% fact and a absolute indictment on the coaching staff 💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯

I agree we need more sacks.

I agree Weaver would have helped in that regard.

BUT

Ole Miss has only allowed two sacks this season. Two! They are pretty good and the play calling gets the ball out fast which helps.

SEC ranking of sacks allowed:

I’d save the hand wringing for 0 sacks against SCAR and MSU (ranked 10th and 9th). That would be under performing against weaker competition.

Just looked around NFL sack leaders past 2 years. Split pretty equally between LBs and DLs in top 10. One thing I did notice is that almost every DL who made the list was somewhere between 265 and 280, not 290+ like a lot of our DL. Seems like we could have a rush personnel group and get more pressure. While hard to argue against our scoring defense, perhaps more pressure would give the offense better field position and/or create more turnovers.

Fair assessment -- But I'd like occasional pressure to A) surprise the other team and keep them honest B) maybe force a TO C) if A and / or B occur we might not be in such close games at the very end ? Yesterday the D was money in half 2 .. We sucked the air out of their passing game , but man we got shredded in half 1 .. just torn up .

I 100% agree that it is not a desirable formula for the whole season - but something tells me it was the intentional game plan yesterday and it was executed fairly effectively after the 1 Q.

Good info. Good post.

Getting qb pressure from the edge has been a damn problem since game 1 2019. Hopefully solved as Wade & Fearbey develop.

No. That's perfectly acceptable.
Cats are 20th in total defense.
15th in scoring defense.
More sacks would be nice. I won't be mad with more.
But they can get 0 sacks and keep doing everything else the same and still be great.

I wish Scang and Yenser would come up with a similar game plan. I'm not confident either knows what they're doing. We are not scheming around our weaknesses so I expect more of the same. So far both hires have been underwhelming IMO.

I don't think any of them possessed anything to approach Allen's total package, including technique.

Getting sacks takes effort just like getting rebounds In basketball. Quickness is more important than size except the middle.

I’ve personally heard Josh Allen give Brad White credit for improving his technical skills between his Junior and Senior years .
I know White can lead a horse to water. But he can't make one drink, and sometimes, you don't have a horse in the paddock in the first place.

We didn't have any sacks because this happened all game and went uncalled

True , and I’m not saying our guys should be playing like Josh Allen . I’m just saying Its puzzling why we haven’t been better with our edge rushers than what we have been .
