Zagoria: Wenyen Gabriel Says Cal Wants Him to Play Wing

He was 6'1 just a few years ago. He still has a lot of guard skills.

All he has to do is point at the role Trey Lyles played on the team last year.

If he wants to play wing, may have a better shot than we've assumed. Everyone has pegged this kid to Duke, but they've already got Tatum locked in at the 3.

If it's what he wants to hear..

But really, all that "wing" has to mean is that he isn't going to play (exclusively) in the post on offense.

Cal played Trey all yr as a wing so he will do the same for Grabriel, Coach K sure won't play him as a wing player

He can play wing at the 4 spot. Four out, one in. Cal usually adapts to his players and if he gets Gabriel, he will play him as a face up 4.

Especially if we get Bridges as well.

Agree with you!

I'm really liking the idea of our 3-4-5 positions being filled by Gabriel, Bridges, SKJ and two 2nd year guys in Humphries/Wynyard.

Bridges as a Winslow style 4 that could swing to the 3, Gabriel an interchangeable 3/4, SKJ a 4/5. Humphries/Wynyard in when you need bulk.

Pair that with Fox and Monk and 2nd year Matthews and Mulder in the backcourt and I think we can go up against anybody.

I am hoping for fultz, monk, Gabriel, bridges, ayten, skj

Still holding slim hope for Giles.

And likely Giles at the 4 and Bolden at the 5.

Coach K loves his spacing. I don't see K going with two frontcourt guys at the same time. Likely see Giles at the 5. Wouldn't surprise me at all if he uses Tatum at the 4 and goes small again.

Agreed.

Right now, if they add Giles as expected, they problably look like this next year:

G Thornton
G Allen
G Jones
F Tatum- K almost always plays a wing at the 4.
F Giles

Four perimeter players around a big.

Give me Smith or Fox at the 1.

Give me one of Monk, Fultz, or Alkins at the 2.

Give me Bridges or Alkins at the 3.

Give me Gabriel or Killeya-Jones at the 4.

Give me Ayton(if he reclassifies) or Bolden at the 5.

I agree would have pick same way.

that's where I am at as well but we will get 2 SGs so IMO it will be Monk and Fultz .

Can't see us getting an extra wing with Mulder and Matthews back. Somebody gets pushed to spot duty if that happens.

Starters
G Fox or Smith
G Monk or Fultz
F Bridges or Alkins
F Gabriel or Killeya-Jones
C Ayton or Bolden

Key Reserves
G Mulder
G Matthews
F Wynyard
C Humphries

That's 9 and I can't see Cal going more than 8 deep, so it's probably Mulder OR Matthews as the reserve guard/wing.

In all honesty, I really don't think we will get two bigs. I think Humphries and Wynyard will man the 5 and we get one of Ayton, Killeya-Jones, and Gabriel to play the 4, with Bridges swinging over to the 4 when we have foul trouble. I would rather have two bigs, though.

Cal doesn't want to platoon again, but he starts getting into a situation where he has to platoon if he adds too much talent. I think Cal will go with first come, first serve until he gets enough guys. Four elite Freshmen plus four returning contributors, gives us a nice 8-man rotation. Then a couple of veteran Seniors (Hawkins and Willis) to round out the squad.
