Your Initial Iowa Scouting Report Directly From Iowa

I lol'd. You understand that we won the first game of the year 7-3. And to do that we scored two safeties and a field goal. You get that was against an FCS team, granted the top FCS team in the country, or one of them. You’re not going to out bad offense Iowa. You just aren’t. Iowa is literally the best team in the country at having a bad offense. Kentucky has literally zero chance at bad offensing Iowa. Call me a homer if you like but it’s true. The Iowa offensive line has actually been called soft this year. Soft. Soft. Iowa. On the offensive line. The center has had timing issues all year and they look like they haven’t played football sometimes.

It’s not all bad. Ferentz made it sound like LaPorta will play. Remember the name Cooper DeJean. We need about six more of him. Sounds like he will play as well. The tight end room is pretty solid. However, they don’t have enough scholarship wide receivers to go four wide.

The defense is just really good. Just absolutely 💯 solid. They make few mistakes. They get in the backfield. They can be beaten deep. There is a myth that they play to not give up the big play and it really isn’t true. I think the defensive backs take chances and sometimes get burned.

The punter and kicker are absolutely solid.
You got nothing on us. Roman Harper called UK O line SOFT ON NATIONAL TV!!!

And then when we lost to Vandy, he doubled down and called the WHOLE TEAM SOFT!!

FOOTBALL

Roman Harper calls Kentucky soft, says Florida will win Saturday

We are trying to convince Iowa we are WORSE than they are. Stay in your lane. 3-5 is 3-5. Only ONE TEAM was worse than 3-5 and that was Vandy.

And guess who beat us????

When you LOSE to the worst team in the conference, what does that make you????

Spin it any way you like.......the first step to recovery is admitting where you currently stand...

Wandale won that game for you last year. Unless you have another one of him I don't see it going the Wildcats way this year.

*Barion brown has entered the chat*

Is that honky who disrespected us still there? The one who said UK doesn’t go to a lot of bowl games, the one Wan’Dale toasted.

I’m pretty confident our guys will go down there with something to prove. I expect CRod to play. Our D will all play. Our phenom freshmen WRs.

Barion will touch it a lot. Lord willing, our long snapper will complete at least 50% of his snaps, and we will win 13-10.

Isn’t Barion from Nashville? Giddy up.

I think we will if Will bolts, and it might be fun...

Honestly, I have no problem with pro prospects sitting out these non-playoff games as a matter of course. They need to just market the non-playoff bowls as preview games... acknowledged opportunities for the "next man up" to show out for the first time, and for everyone, players, coaches, and fans, to fully understand and appreciate the portal needs/opportunities of the participating programs.

Of course, that might work for TV viewers, but it might well destroy the traditional bowl game getaway. I'm not sure how some of the host cities will feel about that.
I disagree with you on sitting out but if Will dies sit out, why not, let's see what Wade can do.

My bad, as you know I'm a bit slow much of the time.

Nobody THAT good. But this year we have three great WR's. Don't have to rely on just one. Robinson, Key and Brown are about as good as anybody could want. And two TE's have been great all year, Dingle and Kattus. Only problem, who is going to get them the ball?

There’s a real feeling in the Iowa board that Petras being out is nothing but a good thing for Iowa. We know what he is. Let’s see what the freshman can do. The transfer from Michigan will be coming in next fall let’s see if the freshman can compete.

Why would you want Levis to play? It seems like you’d want to see whatbyour backup can do anyway against a good defense. The coaches can see if they need to hit the portal.

The coaches pretty much know from practice who needs to enter the portal. As for sitting out, I'm simply not wired that way. There is a game to play so play it. Yes, I'm a boomer.

No idea how either fan base finds any excitement from this. I don’t even know how most of the players give a crap on the UK side.

Season is a wrap.

If they can't throw the ball, they are in serious trouble. I only see one weakness and not being able to throw the ball would eliminate that one worry. The way our two safeties are playing, just mostly running would be an interesting thing to see.

Looking forward to interaction with you guys again on another bowl game.

First, such amazing similarities in the two programs in many areas.

2022 Iowa season: Underachieving. No way else to say it.

As you may know, Iowa wins with their defense first, and their special teams second. Our offense was rated #130 this past year out of 131. Complete horrid show:

Iowa Offense:

Two best talents are #2 Caleb Jonson at RB (true freshman) and #84 Sam LaPorta.

BIG question mark if LaPorta will play or not. He missed the final regular season game due to a knee injury from the week before. Since he'll be one of the better TEs in the draft, I wouldn't be shocked to see him not play in the bowl game- especially know he hurt his knee only a couple weeks ago. At this point though, Ferentz says he's planning to play in the game.

Johnson at RB is a stud.

Iowa has already lost their two most talented WRs to the portal-- not saying much. They are just void of talent at WR. Only thee WRs will play- Ragaini, Vines, Brecht--and none are big threats IMO.

Offensive Line a complete and total mess. Little more to be said.

As noted in my other post, QB Spencer Petras won't play due to shoulder surgery. Backup has already hit the portal. Third teamer Joey Labas or 4th teamer Carson May (true freshman) will be the starter-- neither EVER taken a snap in his college career yet.

DEFENSE:

Outstanding overall....Probably top 10 in America. Saved Iowa's ass over and over. MANY interceptions returned for TDs past two years. Never seen anything like it.

Best all-round player IMO is redshirt freshman Cooper DeJean, a CB. He's also the punt returner and gunner on the punt team. Just a magnificent all-round player.

LB Jack Campbell the heart and soul of the team really. LB Seth Benson a good one too.

Big solid DL and secondary solid too.

Again, GREAT defense all-round.

SPECIAL TEAMS:

Grade A. Like the defense, has saved Iowa's ass many times the past two years.

PUNTING:

Tory Taylor. Fabulous pner overall, specialty pinning the ball down deep in the opponent's end. Australian punter.

FG KICKER:

Big-timer true freshman.

Fire away with any detailed questions. You know me; I won't sugarcoat.
Do You live in Iowa. If so where?

We lost to Vandy.....at home.

Don't try to out poormouth us.

We fell back to next to last place in our side of the conference.

Both of our senior inside linebackers are injured and have been out for several weeks. Not sure they will play and definitely won't be 100%.

Our fg kicker got the yips early and is in rehab with the long snapper. Sports psychologist gave up on both of them.

Our O line has an NIL deal with a screen door company.

Will Levis has been hit so many times this year he is not sure where he is at most of the time. Definitely dealing with PTSD brought on by playing QB behind an Ole' O-line.

CRod probably will not play. And I don't blame him for the way he was treated by the school after sacrificing his body for so many years to help this team win games.

No OC or RB/ST coach for this game, so the team trainer will double as OC/ST Coach and Trainer.
All plays on offense less than 3rd and 15 will start with a hand off. Anything 3rd and 15 or longer will be a WR screen behind the line of scrimmage.

I have video of all three of the plays we will run if you need them.

One good punt returner is all you will need to win this one. And a field goal kicker.

A safety will probably do it.
Well done sir.

Oh, we definitely need to hit the portal for a QB for next year.

I'm going to disagree with you a bit. I think our defense is about even with Iowa. The stats are built by your schedule and we played the #1, #7 and #8 offenses in football. Iowa played 1 and was obliterated. We held UGA to a season low 16 points.

The same with our offense. While it hasn't been good it really isn't as bad as it's looked either. We missed CRod for 1/3 of the season, Levis had to miss a game and played hurt most of the season. The biggest plus is Scangarello won't be calling plays.

Our special teams are just putrid.

This will be a 3 point game unless Levis and CRod plays.
Iowa played two teams that are in this year's CFP. They also played Michigan.

And if you want to look closer at the stats, you would find Iowa held Ohio State to an average of 2.2 yards a carry in Columbus. In fact, Iowa rushed for more yards in that game than did OSU.

Iowa got blistered that day by CJ Stroud in the air-- the only time this year a QB has killed them in the air.

Honestly, I don't think your defense is that of Iowa's. Iowa's is a legit top 10 defense in America.

Don't threaten Iowa with a good time!

The above mentioned 7-3 win this year and the ever glorious 6-4 win over a Penn State team that was so offensively inept that Iowa GIVE them 2 safetys because the risk of a punt block was greater than our offense getting into FG range.
The 6-4 win over Penn State happened 18 years ago. Iowa also beat Ohio State 6-0 in 1957, might as well throw that in there too.

Both pictures sum up our Iowa offense. Complete garbage and an embarrassment. We didn't score a touchdown against South Dakota St!! We won 7-3 with a field goal and two safeties. A whole new level of pathetic.

Whoever the Iowa QB is vs. Kentucky, Labas or May, it will be a one game experience for at least the next couple years since McNamara is coming on the scene soon.
Any idea why McNamara picked Iowa?

I mean was he promised a more dynamic offense going forward? A girlfriend that goes to Iowa?!

Definitely no way of going into a Kentucky game. But we are not far ahead of you offensively.

Yes, it's very clear why McNamara chose Iowa.

The "expected" next OC at Iowa, or at least co-OC, Jon Budmyr, has been at Iowa for the past year now as an analyst. However, while he was OC at Colorado State not long ago, he successfully recruited and signed Cade's younger brother (also a QB). Therefore, Budmyr has a strong relationship with the McNamara family previously. ANd I think McNamara loves the thought of Budmyr being his coach.

Additionally, Iowa has promised him they will bring in 2 or 3 portal WRs as a big upgrade there.

Hmm, maybe we'll find a way to have some fun smack talk anyway. My reference to only playing 1 was in total offense. I dont think OSU has any business in the playoffs. It will be interesting when UGA stomps both.

You guys play great defense but there isn't much gap between us. Walker is going to destroy the left side of your OL. He's a special beast.

I'm especially glad your center from last year is gone. He was a special player, and an even better person. It was hard to dislike him.

Who has more business being in the playoff than Ohio State besides the other three who got in?

Believe me, I also don't believe this was a dominant OSU team this year despite being 11-1. I've seen far better OSU teams than this one. But Alabama over OSU? I suppose people can debate that, but that would be about as weak and entertaining a debate as watching the Iowa and Kentucky offenses play in the bowl game.

Deviating a moment from the Iowa scouting report for the bowl game. In transfer portal news looks like Iowa potentially getting their SECOND team captain from this year's Michigan team in TE Erick All. He came to Michigan in the same recruiting class as Cade McNamara. He'd be a BIG get for Iowa.

UGA beats Any team in the country. As to OSU, what team deserves to be in more? Alabama? Who did they beat? USC? Same thing. They beat Notre Dame, but so did Ohio State.

If Alabama had one loss they would have gotten it, but they lost twice.

Well, if you're picking the best 4, Bama is certainly there. If you're picking by w/l then TCU and OSU are there.

You do realize Bama lost twice, at the last second, on the road in the SEC. I guess we'll soon see how the B1G and SEC stack up.

We may have our new OC in the bowl game.

And Ohio State's only loss was to the #2 rated team in the CFP. You do realize that right?

Yep, my bigger issue is TCU. As for OSU, they played a weak schedule then got blown out at home. I'll be glad when expansion happens.
