Are we striking out? The latest is that the WR from Jackson State (Jackson State?) committed to VaTech over us. Really?

Come on, man. What makes you so sure our coaching staff was sold on Spencer? Best guess, Stoops has 3 open scholarships left to fill now, and he is obviously trying to add a TE, an OT, and another defensive lineman.

So don't accept every morsel of click bait you see online at face value. Stoops has already reconstructed our WR room. Shorts bolted and Washington is probably an upgrade for this system at this time. Stellato and Law are major additions. Hester is long, athletic, and underrated. DJ Miller will see the field a lot as a true freshman. Miller impressed everyone bigtime during spring practice and will make the playing rotation. That influenced the coaches' thinking. When Hardley Gilmore decided to return, that was the finale for the WR room for now. Coach Hamdan made it clear last summer that he loves Gilmore. Once Gilmore was healthy last November, he lit up the receiver rotation and made several remarkable catches. Gilmore already knows Hamdan's offense. We are good to go at WR.

The WR position looks like the best position on the offensive roster. Maclin and Gilmore are top talents. My concern is do we have a guy that can get them the ball. The QB's are a big "if"

UK WR Depth chart

X - Gilmore, Farrier
Slot - Law, Stellato....I bet Quisenberry gets on field
Y - Maclin, Hester

I hated losing Dane Key (could care less about Barion)....but that ain't a bad WR group at all...especially to walk back into Gilmore so late in the game.

As noted by Boz...I'm not sold a bit we'll get them the ball. I see Bush as high school level OC....I see us throwing eons of passes behind or at LOS and our WR getting blown up by DBs just sitting on short stuff with no legit vertical passing game to keep defense on their heels.

When I saw spring drills of Calzado throwing 5 yard passes to the sidelines...into a net like 15 times..I was like this is so grade school crap offense. I see another poor offensive year at UK to be fair.

Ashton Cozart has a lot more upside than Spencer. Now that we know they were in final negotiations with Cozart, there is your factual explanation for why Stoops didn't chase Spencer. Not only did we not "strike out", we got a player with more upside than Spencer.

Why do you think Cozart is better than Spencer?

Reasonable question. We won't know for sure until each player plays Power 4 football because potential doesn't put any points on the scoreboard. But I definitely prefer Cozart for many reasons. UK's coaches have been trying to recruit Cozart for several years, so there is familiarity. That helps a lot. Cozart is bigger and faster than Spencer. Although he hasn't played much, Cozart has been taught by coaches at OR and SMU, two playoff level programs with solid staffs. And, importantly, Cozart has 3 years of eligibility left.

I won't link another website here, but analysts' assessments of Cozart's tools and athleticism are very impressive. Far more so than Spencer. You can easily find them online.

I can't tell you that Spencer will never catch a pass at VA Tech. I'm sure he will. But Cozart is a great fit for us that can be developed, whereas Spencer would have been a box of chocolates, to use the Forrest Gump analogy.

Maybe not this year but soon I think we have some real playmakers in DJ Miller and Quisenberry

Now add Cozart to the rotation and also Washington had a good spring. And with Miller already opening some eyes we could be three deep everywhere. Been a while since we have had that.

It takes a lot of energy refuting knuckleheads who don't care to use logic and just type the first bombastic thought that enters their head. I appreciate your efforts.

No. It means we are planning to play 12 personnel more than the 44% we did last year, so need a bunch of bodies to block. One injury and our playbook would be out the window.

That was the preferred set the last several years. Maybe last year they kept trying to force touches and it threw off the ratio. We should definitely be a 12 personnel team if not 22.

11 personnel/3WR sets last year were close to 60%, given the talent of that room and the snap counts apparently promised. It was just a disaster because the line wasn't able to give enough time for them to get open.

DJ Miller has the total package, including length, catch radius, athleticism, and intangibles, to light it up.

I realize Quisenberry is a local hero who had a productive spring in our understaffed WR room. And I realize everyone REALLY wants him to succeed, especially those who overvalue instate players on a relative basis. Personally, I want every UK football player to succeed, regardless of home state. I will just caution again that Quisenberry is 5'9" 165#. In the SEC, 165# football players get the crap knocked out of them. At 165#, he will get knocked off his routes by SEC DBs. You might say he is too quick to get hit. Uh, no. In the SEC, that simply isn't the truth. As a receiver, Quisenberry will be responsible for blocking and he will get hit. As a slot, he will run routes in front of safeties in the middle of the field. I'm not suggesting that no 165# SEC player has ever been successful. Rarely, it has happened. Probably the best example was Dexter McCluster, a 170# player who ranks #3 on Ole MS's single season rushing list. McCluster was electric. But that was 2009. UK has a lot of really good slot receivers, like Kendrick Law, Troy Stellato, David Washington, and Cam Miller. The truth is that Law and Washington produced the most important breakouts in the WR room this spring. Washington, in particular, weighs 205# and is one of the fastest and most athletic players on our team. I hope Quisenberry finds a niche, but he needs to get a lot stronger.

We have many knowledgeable posters who actually study the roster, transfer portal, and recruiting classes. They make the website interesting and enjoyable.

OTOH, we also have knuckleheads, trolls, and miserable posters who just like to use the anonymity of a screen name to lash out for a catharsis. The latter have been well recognized in UK's fan base for decades. It gets tougher to blame them when a site moderator is lashing out and bashing our coaches.

But, clearly, it is best if we don't slander our school and our team in public. People believe what they want to believe. For some, choosing their own set of "facts" is easier than weighing everything with an open mind and displaying rational patience. That is called "confirmation bias".

Here is some material we can utilize for rational guidance-

If we run 12 personnel 60% of the time, which is what the teas leaves are indicating. then our slot WR position will likely be the odd man out. You can't have petite receivers blocking that many snaps.

All should be required reading in school, but there's a growing faction of anti-intellectualism that somehow thinks intelligence and logic are somehow a negative.

I have no problem when people criticize Stoops or the team, especially when they use logic and facts to support their thesis. It's the fans that are ignorant of how the sport works who express their feeling of negativity, but that are easily refuted with a moment of data collection, like former basketball only fans who jumped on the bandwagon when Stoops won 10 a few times and now they are calling for his head because they're so sensitive that they can't handle a slight reversion to the mean.

DJ Miller is an unknown and little can be expected of him. Watch his tape he looks very slow for WR. Quisenberry is tiny and questionable SEC talent. I doubt he ever plays.

DJ Miller is not slow. And BTW, Miller reportedly had at least 6 SEC and 10 B10 offers. OR, SoCal, MI, TN, Ole MS, and Miami don't offer slow receivers. Miller was very highly recruited by really good programs. He is an outstanding athlete with a high performance ceiling, and a big recruiting win for UK.

Unfortunately, though, you are probably right about Quisenberry, who has good speed but is tiny.
