Would we have 3 more championships if Keightley were alive?

Just musing about something I heard on the radio, about how the players viewed Bill as the benign grandfather of UK basketball, confided in him and went to him with problems, and loved him like nobody else around the program

I got to wondering if Mr Keightley would have been the humor and outlook that relaxed the players and seen a win against WVU in that miserable 2010 regional game, and again two years ago against UConn and against Wiscy last year

Interesting thought, but we began to bring in a different type of player than in his heyday.Would Cal have delegated the opportunity for that kind of relationship and could it have developed in one year?

Hard to believe he would have had an impact on three titles but with everything that goes into a championship run its not hard to fathom he could have been a difference maker in one of them.

No. Keightley was awesome. I was fortunate to talk with him many times back in my days as a student in the ERupption Zone. To suggest he had any impact on wins and losses though is a stretch.

There is no substitution for the effect that GREAT people have on people around them. Bill was one of those people. I strongly believe that the odds are that having him around may have helped swing the balance in one of those situations.

Lol. Maybe he got along with Pitino so well because Bill kept a side piece for decades. Used to go to their house on Thanksgiving.

Nice guy and all, but just a guy with a front row seat. Funny post.

Bill would not have made those three's needed against WV nor a shot in 6 scoreless possessions against Wisky.

Bill Keighley was a fine human. I took my sons to the father/son camps back in the late 90s, early 2000's and Mr Keightley, after the first year, always remembered my name.

Bill Keightley was the cat-whisperer, so he might have helped.

Would've never seen the floor under Cal. His pick and roll defense was severely lacking.
and while he was a decent assist man, he couldn't drive the basket and kick out or draw a foul

I am curious, though - how Mr. Keightly would have taken to Boogie? Or handled the twins? Kind of interesting to ponder

I worked for Bill for 3 years under Coach Rupp.He was best man at my wedding..He talked many players out of transferring and Tubby often sought his advice. Not sure if he could have made a difference in game outcome though..A great human being..I think of him often especially on December 17th his Birthday..Rest in Peace Bill

perhaps the thread title was overreaching a bit - but it did spark conversation. how WOULD Mr. K have felt about Cal and the players he brought in? How would he have dealt with the whole OAD thing? I'd have loved to see how he would have interacted with Boogie, and WCS and Townes - our biggest "characters" in the Cal era.

So, not really a dumb thread, as there is nothing wrong with reminiscing

I'm sure he meant no disrespect to Mr. K sir. I believe he was just calling out Samwise for being his normal obnoxious self. Thanks for sharing your stories about Bill, I personally love hearing that type of stuff. Thanks.

LOL

What's funny is I am not trying to be obnox at all...

I was just curious if it would have made a difference if Bill were over there, kind of like the Mount Rushmore of Kentucky basketball, and the guys had someone who they could approach and knew had a much different perspective on the game than the head coach

As I have said before and tell my GF often..."whatever..."

I think he would have loved Boogie. Look at old videos of Cousins with fans and their babies. Look t how cousins played in the alumni game. He was never judged here like he is now. I could see him coming back for a Game, and the first person he hugged would be Bill. I bet keightley would give cousins few jabs and also advice like a grandpa. Out of all of Cals players, I think those two would have been close...... Can you imagine when cousins came back to the bench in the Louisville game? Or when Bledsoe got into his scuffle...... Bill would have their backs. I know one thing. Bill would love the record against UL since Cal has been here. He would have really loved the NCAA tourney wins.

Seriously. Nice try, but NO is the answer. Don't think Bill's vertical was real good.

I think you're right; no I KNOW you're right. No doubt Boogie and Bill would've been close. I am sure, too, that Cal would have treated him with the proper respect - and then some. He'd have loved all our guys who have come through - and yes, the wins LOL
