World Wide Wes

I thought the 30 for 30 would explain a little bit better but after that I came away with even more questions.

Seriously don't know who he is, why he is the guy who's blessing coaches need in order get certain players, or how he got into that role/business.

It's like he's some sort of controller in an underground basketball world. He directs the traffic.

The dumbest message is from card628 something or other . He said this -
"Cal could get Kobe Bryant, Kareem and Magic and I still would question if he could win a title." Ummmm hey asshole he has won one.
Those guys are 38, 70 and 57 - I'd question it too. Which is appropriate, since they never consider the age, just the stars or the name!

It must be nice to have such a terrible, useless brain that you can fool yourself into believing extremely stupid things in order to feel better.

"Any players who Cal out-hustles us for, are of shady character. They're going to fail anyway so I'm glad and I never wanted them in the first place."

"This kid chose us over UK, is a great person through and through, is going to succeed to the highest degree, and nothing untoward was committed by our team's staff at any time."

The razor thin line between these two things is where a kid decides to go to college.

I think that's pretty close. I always thought of it like pipeline schools/areas in football recruiting. Some programs are in with the coaches, etc in those areas and they're more likely to feed into your school.

Basketball produces so many fewer athletes that it works at a more individual level with relationships instead of schools.

So while it's not like Wes is handing these kids a blank check to come to Kentucky, he connects Cal to the people close to the kid so we can build that relationship and start recruiting him.

Plus, being connected with guys like LeBron and Drake and Jay Z and whoever else is a nice boost to credibility. Successful people end up around other successful people, and if you're 17, you want to rub elbows with those guys. Cal is in that group, and it earns him some clout.

My favorite was when Wall and cousins families were given horse farms in Lexington. I mean what would they do with a horse farm with no experience and why would they want one when their kids are leaving town in a year to be rich.

So Cal pays players but UNC is clean and had nothing to do with academic fraud or Fats Thomas.

Okay.

Haha

Why do they call him Worldwide? The man does virtually nothing in or for Australia.

The best one:

I think the money laundering at UK is kept under wraps pretty damn well, plus, the ones who could bring forward credible allegations are very likely afraid for their lives (yes, I believe this).
I don't like to post "lol" but I legitimately laughed out loud at that one.

I know the stories of money changing hands is just to enticing to turn down for rival fans, but it really just doesn't make sense. I talked to a guy recently - UofL fan, but a pretty good guy, not into all the red vs blue nonsense - and he told me with 100% absolute certainty the Harrison twins had a known price of $80,000. Everyone knew that was the asking price. Which is why Rick never got involved, he "doesn't do those things."

So, to believe that, I have to accept these 2 things (off the top of my head):

1. In the hypercompetitive, multi-billion dollar business, where getting recruits means the difference between being successful and being unemployed, a coach who "knew" that the Harrisons got 80k from UK would not, even anonymously, say anything to the NCAA. Cal is so popular, and has no enemies - maybe that makes it a little more believable, but still. :grimace:

2. If a coach routinely pays for players, eventually you're going to have a kid that doesn't work out. Just doesn't develop like anticipated, so he's not as good as we thought, and doesn't get the playing time, doesn't get drafted. When that happens, about 2% of those players and their parents are accepting of the obvious - the rest want to blame someone. Usually, the coach. Now you've got angry kids and parents with an axe to grind. And yet, no one ever says "Cal gave me money." Makes total sense that no one ever squealed.....

These kids come to UK not because Cal will give the dad $80,000, or whatever, but because they think - they know - that about 9.5 months after getting to UK they are going to be drafted and make millions. 80k is chicken feed.
Uavel fans are delusional

Or maybe WWW actually cares about kids and their families, as Cal does, and wants them to succeed so he steers them towards a coach with a proven track record instead of towards one who will prioritize their own needs over the recruits?

Novel approach I know but that's what Cal has built here!

What was UNC fans reasoning for their program getting that conveyor belt of McDonald's All-Americans in the '80s and '90s?

My favorite WWW story is that after we won in 2012, Davis bypassed Cal, his teammates, and family to give WWW a big hug. I've yet to see any evidence of this, but I remember it being thrown around a ton after 12. Still makes me laugh.

For the record, after the game, AD ran to MKG and hugged him, followed by a team group hug, long Terrence Jones hug, Doron Lamb hug, then hugged Thomas Robinson as he walked off the court. At no point did he run into the stands or bypass Cal to hug WWW or Phil Knight.

Believe it or not I sat right next to them. This is completely untrue. Davis and MKG hugged WWW after the game but neither of them bypassed anyone to get to him. Trust me I remember this like it was yesterday, even have pics of this happening.

He's like the boogeyman to UNCheat fans. According to them, he is the only reason Cal gets a recruit. Quite funny actually.
At first when Cal was at memphis he was a huge reason Cal got Dujan Wagner, and MKG here that i know of.

Y'all should not use high profile people like WWW to buy your recruits. We designate low volume posters from DI to pay our recruits and referees. No chance of getting caught that way lol

Any links online for the 30 for 30?? Missed the airing due to work and I've been looking for re runs if anyone can help me out that would be great! Thanks.
