Will Mark be forced to bark at officials

Golden whining to the refs got call after call. Watching all the other SEC coaches they all get into the refs to try and influence calls their way.

Mark is so quiet it seems the refs aren’t worried about UK non calls.

Does he have to let them know he’s displeased? Are the other coaches getting over on him by their grousing? Most do spend a lot of time yelling.

Thought Fla got a big benefit today on offense in front of their bench with Golden and staff harping on the refs.

Golden made 2/3 of the calls from the sidelines in the second half. That was why there were so many delayed whistles. He had the ear of the sideline official on his end of the floor.
How'd it work out for him? How has barking at officials worked out for Cal over his entire career? I bet he sends Anthony Davis a box of money every month.

Well, for today's game, it almost gave him a win at the free throw line.

With about 3 minutes to go in the game Florida had shot 32 FT and we had shot 16 FT total. That is a HUGE disparity, especially against the home team.

If Florida hits 70% of their FT today, they win. All because one coach got a better whistle by influencing weak ( corrupt???) officials.

I get your all's argument. I just think it equals out. Pope does indeed get on the refs, he just does it his way and I'm very happy with everything so far. Who knows what calls we got because Pope had discussions with the refs. He could have been telling the refs all kinds of things, and I'm sure he was. Saying he needs to stomp and whine is not exactly true at all IMO.

There's no rule in the rule book that fouls have to be even. Teams play different.

If we don't allow 2nd chance points off giving Florida offensive rebounds, we win by double digits. Florida was plus 9 on offensive rebounds...thats potentially giving someone another opportunity of atleast 18 points. They had 19 total offense rebounds. You have control over that as a team..

Was nice to hear Rupp with the refs you suck chants.

32-16 free-throw disparity at Rupp until Florida started intentionally fouling. We can sit here and debate what Pope should do all day, but that's not a home whistle.

The fact that he stays as calm as he does shocks me, I can't keep it together watching on tv I can't imagine how I would be on the sidelines.
I think he sees the game in much slower motion than we do, he's a known cerebral coach who's really into the "flow" of things. Mark is also an eternal optimist, so I think he just focuses on what's actually going on the court.

So last year, people got sick of Cal acting like a lunatic on the sidelines. Now, we have a coach go 3-0 against top 10 teams but some folks aren’t satisfied because the coach is composed with the refs?? Lol what!?

Yes. Everything is at the pinnacle. Nothing to debate.

Don't understand why so many fans are so concerned with Pope not raving like a lunatic at officials. Cal conditioned people to believe that is effective. It's not, never has been. Wish people could accept Pope for who he is.

I think it's something fans will talk about when there is a double freethrow disparity at home, and Pope is sitting quiet on the sideline. That said, I'd rather have that than a raving lunatic. I think that there is a happy medium, however. Not a huge deal, as we won.

Pope gets onto officials. Go watch the replay. He isn’t chewing into guys and yelling at them but he does get onto refs. Pope is not a Stackhouse type where he shows little to no emotion. He’s a fiery guy. I think the problem with this whole deal is a logic one.

What We Know: UK suffered a FT disparity.

Florida coach was much more aggressive to refs and got more calls

Jumping to conclusion: UK lost the FT attempt comparison because Golden was aggressive with refs.

Id like to see a little more fire out of him

But.. what if being even reserved and not in their face (like Dan Hurley) is what will ultimately get the officials on his side after a while?

Would be nice if Rupp could get the type of treatment that Cameron or Allen Field house gets. This could have its benefits. Look at Jay Wright and what a class act he is. He was a huge ambassador for Villanova basketball and the game. I dont know anyone who didnt like Villanova during those years. And now you compare that to Hurley who everyone is already starting to hate.

Kill 'em with kindness. It could work.

Yeah, I watched the game. Multiple occasions the refs were calling fouls as they stood right by Golden yelling at them to calm a foul. Did you see the phantom 3 point foul? Yeah, me too.

Moving on.

I agree, and this is random, but today he made me think of Larry Bird when he was the Pacers coach. I can't remember the exact game, but it was a buzzer beater in the playoffs (Reggie Miller maybe). The crowd and the team absolutely erupted and Bird just stood there like he was in line at the DMV. I can't find a clip or I'd post it. It's always stuck with me for some reason.

You also never see our players questioning calls. Meanwhile, most other teams, especially Alabama, Auburn and Florida….seemingly question every call that goes against them.

Mimicking their respective coaches.

Love CMP. Appreciate his optimistic approach. He’s a kind man. Terrific coach. I heard him say he went to an officials seminar to get a feel for it.

Don’t want a screaming demon but I can’t believe so many don’t understand there is a “ game within a game”. I don’t like it but please don’t think it’s not there.
Think of the best coaches and their ability to “ work” the officials. K, Smith, McGuire, Rupp, Wooden, Knight, Hurley, Calhoun, Self, Barnes, Pearl, Oats, Izzo, Pitino, Crum, and on and on.

You have to fight fire with fire. Can’t be too polite with the refs. If you get a couple calls it helps or plant a seed in the officials minds. They have to have a bit of fear that a coach can embarrass them and has influence on their job.
As a player you like hearing your coach standing up for the team. Just balance out the other guy. I thought Golden got the better whistle at Rupp and it kept them in the game.

Maybe CMP does it in a quiet manner and I just haven’t seen it.

Completely agree with everything said.

I too don’t believe being easy on officials will give us a favorable whistle. I haven’t seen anything so far to suggest it does.

They lost but look at the number of free throws Florida had. It should have been about 10 to 12 less free throws. You get that part right and we have that game by 12 plus points. That foul on the 3 point shot by Butler was just flat our ridiculous. Each drive we bodied them and a whistle was blown about 2/3rds the time. They bodied us and we got a call about 10% of the time.

Just saying. Pope will figure out SEC refs. It make take most of the year but he will realize when to get on them and when to just let it go.

I would say Pope gets onto them, in his own way. As everyone is saying, kill them with kindness. It is not just Pope getting use to the refs, they must get use to him as well. Maybe soon we will see Pope give them the Spock eyebrow raise, and all calls start flowing our direction. I agree with the disparity. It was an emotional game, and I much would rather have calmness than screaming. Though, when I went to bed around 3:30 am last night (Philippine time), my voice was hoarse enough for me and Pope both.

With some of these refs who are easily corrupt and the other who are flat out terrible at their jobs, I would get fined regularly and thrown out often.

When any team doubles up the amount of free throws taken then the game isn't being called the same on both ends of the floor. I would say this same thing if it was UK that had shot twice as many free throws. I'm not saying it is intentional or a ref with a gambling debt or anything else other than they have let one coach or crowd influence the way they are officiating the game.

The problem is that even if Pope has his own quiet manner, it didn't really help at all yesterday and very nearly cost us the game.

Florida was getting every bump call. Meanwhile, UK had four or five potential and-ones in the second half and didn't get a call for any of them.

Refs were blowing the whistle late (three times) for Florida, and even called a foul on a three pointer where there was no contact on the replay (it was one of the late calls).

Pope's expression was absolutely stoic in all these scenarios.

I'm not expecting Calipari-level antics from Pope on the sidelines, but lighting into the refs two or three times a game is a healthy way to deal with the refs in a game where your guys are clearly getting shafted.

Todd Golden was whining on literally EVERY possession that we scored or UF didnt to the refs. He reminded me of Kevin Stallings how whiny he was. It clearly worked..
