Without any agenda, who do you trust knows most about the game and gives an honest opinion?

I don't think there is one(at one time I thought Bilas) they are all playing an angle to get eyes and ears or are under a type of duress because of where they work.I doubt we ever hear what they really think

They all have an agenda. They all played in an area of the country, have their favorites, and have their bias. It's foolish to think other wise. Of the two that try to tow a line Bilas and Rafferty both come to mind of the big boys.

I trust Bilas' opinion on team play, and x and o stuff. He lost some cred with me when he started shoveling sand on the UNC fraud. Everyone at ESPN is "all hands on deck" for the tarholes. I heard one commentator whining recently that people were unfairly recruiting against UNC by bringing up the scandal, and that it was all lies. UNC has charges of LOIC RIGHT NOW.

Kara Lawson
She is very good. Along with Doris Burke, honestly, they might be the best two.

Bilas is great, but he hates the NCAA which is why he isn't hammering UNC, not because ESPN has told him not to. Vitale is a front runner who loves us and loves Coach Cal, but also loves all the other big boys. Don't know why people hate him. He isn't the best analyst, but he loves the game and has passion. Dakich is a troll but knows the game, and knows the Xs and Os. Honestly Pelphrey isn't very good.

Maybe we should watch and enjoy the game instead of critiquing the freaking TV guys at every chance we get.

Disagree. He could remain silent on the matter but insists on running interference. BTW, if you don't like the topic, it's easy to just not click the thread.

He's only a columnist, but the guy I find consistently sharpest and most neutral is Sporting News' Mike DeCourcy.

I am not going to bash her, howevvvvver; did you here her before the SC game?
She laid the ground work on how the SEC was going to shake out after USCjr wins that game. Not once was there a mention of "what if UK won"...

Kara Lawson hands down.

Doris Burke maybe if it didn't sound like she had a hog jaw in.

At one point I would have said Jay Bilas. Not so much anymore.

This is exactly why there's no good answer to the question - it's impossible for people who are biased in the first place (and we're all biased toward UK) to have an unbiased opinion on this subject.

I like DeCourcy a lot. But he's a HUGE homer for Coach Cal. So UK fans see him as "neutral," but if you were to ask others around the country, they would say DeCourcy favors Cal. It's the same reason UK fans hate Dakich. He's actually very good when it comes to everything not involving UK. But he has seen how easy it is to rile up UK fans, and it's almost a sport for him now.

Jay Bilas is still the best.

He knows the game as well as anybody, and he strives to be objective on nearly every topic.. the only exception is that he hates the NCAA like a fat kid hates celery, which doesn't impact his evaluation of basketball itself.

Some of you guys are giving up on him because he's mum on UNC, but what is he supposed to do? Get fired over it? It's the biggest scandal in CBB history and nobody on the #1 sports outlet discusses it. It's obvious that the orders come from on high (John Skipper, UNC alum and president of ESPN).

In fact, people should be incredibly worked up about the fact that the station is ignoring the scandal altogether. That itself is a scandal, and I'm not a conspiracy theory guy whatsoever, but it's painfully obvious that people are muzzled up there.

So again, is Bilas supposed to risk his job when it's clear that the order is out to keep it down? He's taken a lot of controversial stances, made a lot of noise on broadcasts that I'm sure the business suits don't like, but I think this one topic is completely off the table for them.

Jay bilas might be one of the few former duke players who became analysts I respect, although Greenberg isn't bad either.

Not trying to bash you at all... But I hear that a lot with Dakich. How he knows the game so well, knows x's and o's so well etc.. I do think he has a pretty fair knowledge of the game probably, however his takes on certain things lead me to believe he either is not that knowledgeable or is just trying to gain attention for being the contrarian. I think the fact that he played and coached under Bobby Knight maybe leads people to believe he knows more than he does. Just saying things loudly and emphatically doesn't make them correct.

I think that Lawson does an outstanding job. She talks about the game and she is fairly neutral all the time. Bilas has always been good and does a great job talking about the game. I also think that Macy is great. Yes, he is a little boring, but he really breaks down the game and talks about where people are improving and what they need to do and really knows the sport. I can't think of anyone else I would rather do the early games than him.

I don't see the need for an analyst or a play caller at all. When I go to a game all I have is the scoreboard and the pa announcer. To me, that is all we need on a tv broadcast.

100% correct. To each his own, but once I began to turn down the sound to where I can only hear whistles and crowd noise and the games have become much more enjoyable to watch. IMO.

Bilas has done more than keep silent. When given the chance, he has painted the picture that UNC is innocent. Maybe those are marching orders. I don't know.

As far as analysis, he is pretty good. He does tend to get stuck on a pet topic and continue to argue his side, even as evidence to the contrary mounts. Probably the lawyer in him.

i agree with some of what you say, but bilas hasn't been "mum" on the unCHEAT scandal. i've heard him more than once defend their stance that the men's basketball program has not been implicated.
i agree that espn's willful ignorance is a scandal, but what do you expect when their head honcho is a turdheel alum.

Bilas and Lawson are 1a and 1b for giving good analysis of the games. As far as announcers, I like Rafftery but he does very little analyzing of the game...just kinda calls it as he sees it which is ok as well. Used to like Vitale for his enthusiasm but he doesn't even talk about the game he is watching any more....it is just a Duke/UNC love fest with repeated calls for UK to renew its rivalry with IU.

Used to be Bilas, but he's sold his soul for UNCheat for pete's sake.

Not an on-air personality, but the only guy I really trust is Decourcy. Oh, and I agree about Lawson. She's very good.

Don't agree at all. I've heard very good critiques from DeCourcy about UK, which were sound opinions. He never puffs up UK beyond what they deserve, and he's not afraid to point out our problems. He is no Cal or UK shill at all.

I haven't heard him do that, but even still, if he has one miss, presumably pressured from on high, I'm gonna give him the benefit of the doubt when he's on point with almost everything else.

If that's what he's saying though, then that particular opinion is dumb as hell.

jkwo, if he was just being mum you would have a point. But Bilas specifically tweeted that it was an academic issue and the basketball team was not named in any way in the Notice of Allegations. He was corrected by people, but as far as I saw, he never acknowledged those corrections. He's in the tank like the rest of them, and it's pathetic.

Pratt, Bilas, Lawson .

Bilas is getting on my nerves with UNC and now UL.
He keeps stating that Pitino has no share of the blame in this situation.

Bilas is still the best, although not as good as he once was.

Lawson is good, but she had a rough game on Saturday, IMO. Usually better than that.
